The Causes Of Corporate Refocusing, Julia Liebeskind, Tim C. Opler

Data from Compustat database was examined to detect which firms refocused and begin to understand why they did so. It was found thatduring the 1980s the largest firms diversified and smaller firms refocused. The analysis ends by noting that this may be due to the increasing domination of the economy by large firms.

A critical analysis of the common agricultural policy (CAP) suggests that the detrimental effects far outweigh the benefits and have created problems such as wage inequities and high prices. Future planning must encompass remedying these problems while retaining beneficial market stability.

The authors argue that loan rates lag behind prime rate during economic recovery and never reach the low limits that might otherwise occur due to changes in the regulatory and market environment. The changes referred to specifically include competition between market components, changes in bankruptcy law, and the introduction of new financial instruments such as money market deposit accounts.

Bank Structure And Small Business Loan Markets, William C. Dunkelberg, Jonathan A. Scott

The extant research on the impact of bank structure on bank service to local communities suggests that customers in local markets are better served by broader multi-office banking authority. Using survey data from a sample of over 4000 small businesses in April 1980, this paper analyzes the impact of branching status, bank size, and market size on average loan cost, bank competition for small firm business, credit availability and ratings of bank performance on desired services. The results of this study provide no evidence that banks in statewide branching environments provide better service to small businesses. Branching status was found …
