As the global consumption of electronic devices continues to grow, so too does the volume of electronic waste (e-waste) that reaches landfill sites, which by 2030, is expected to reach 74.7M tonnes worldwide. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that across Europe less than 40% of e-waste is subject to sustainable recovery and further reinforced by the planned obsolescence of devices. An increasing amount of e-waste can be characterised as so-called ‘smart’ Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This paper firstly describes how our research engaged with industry and community stakeholders to explore their perceptions and behaviours relating to electronic …
Museums At A Crossroads, Licia Calvi
Museums At A Crossroads, Licia Calvi
IASDR Conference Series
What type of museum experiences can be designed when local communities are involved? And where does technology fit? How can museums as places to nurture community engagement also become spaces to have cultural, transformative experiences? Museums and cultural heritage institutions are not only custodians of the some of the world’s most valuable natural and creative works; they are themselves creative institutions that reflect and shape cultural production. Especially since the advent of the New Museology, this creative potential has been understood in interdisciplinary terms, bringing theories and methods such as postcolonial studies and poststructuralism to bear on these processes of …

Examining The Affordance Effect Of Shifting Symbols On The Virtual Buttons Of Smartphones, Ming-Da Wu, Hsi-Jen Chen
IASDR Conference Series
The concept of on-screen affordance suggests that the visual properties of digital objects can affect how users perceive their function and operation. This study aimed to investigate the on-screen affordance of virtual buttons on smartphones and examine whether the visual properties of virtual buttons, such as symbol position, would affect users' entry performance on smartphones. To this end, the study has designed a shifting symbol that suggests where to tap on virtual buttons, thereby helping users tap the button center. This study adopted a two-way within-subject design: 2 (symbol position: static mode vs. dynamic mode) × 26 (key position: 26 …

“One of the most significant facts of our time is the predominance of organizations. Perhaps this is the most significant. It will take time to fully understand its effects on individuals' thinking and behavior. Only a few of them will not be affected by this conditioning process”. If we read this sentence today, for the first time, without knowing its context, date and source, we would first of all be struck by its timeliness. We could also assume that we are dealing with an extract from a publication in the field of economics or business organization aimed at investigating the …

This paper introduces a new course being developed at our University in Graphic Communications to develop a pipeline which uses only online AI content generators to produce designs based on a …
The Brand As A Place. For A Model Interpreting Identity In The Digital Age., Francesco E. Guida, Elisa Finesso
The Brand As A Place. For A Model Interpreting Identity In The Digital Age., Francesco E. Guida, Elisa Finesso
IASDR Conference Series
What if the brand is a place? In specialist literature, the brand interacts through a series of tangible and intangible touchpoints with its interlocutors. When we buy items, use services, or come into contact with any expression of a brand, we come into contact with its being. Whether these are points of sale, events, websites, packaging and products, touchpoints help the interlocutor enter the world of the brand and experience it. These elements play an essential role in building a long-term engagement with it. However, in an ever-changing environment where brands must be flexible and agile to remain market relevant, …

Fictional Brand Design. Evolution, Strategies, And An Attempt To A History Of Visual Identities In Audiovisual Narratives., Francesco E. Guida, Lorenzo Bernini
IASDR Conference Series
Brands tell stories to affirm their values, positioning, and identity. They tell stories that allow people to recognise themselves in them, to share them, to feel part of them. That occurs in the real world as in the world of fiction. The term fictional branding refers to the design and use of brands that do not refer to any existing service, product, company or organisation. They can include any brand referring to products or commercial services, political institutions, military organisations, and more. This paper aims to offer a comprehensive look at the topic through historical and theoretical research and analyse …

Touchy-Feely: A Designerly Exploration Of Haptic Representations Of Three Mood States, Haian Xue, Qianqian Zheng, Pieter M. A. Desmet
IASDR Conference Series
Human moods are diffuse, elusive, and often difficult to articulate, yet they hold immense potential for wellbeing-centric design because they play a significant role in shaping our everyday life experiences. A person’s mood influences their experiences with a designed system, and in turn, their interactions with the design also influence their mood for better or worse. To enable designers to better comprehend and communicate moods in their design processes, this paper reports a project that explored the possibilities of creating haptic objects as a medium for communicating subtle qualities of specific moods. The project focused on three commonly experienced moods …

Embedded Actors In Design Objects: Reflexivity In Design For Social Innovation, Danwen Ji, Ziqi Li
Embedded Actors In Design Objects: Reflexivity In Design For Social Innovation, Danwen Ji, Ziqi Li
IASDR Conference Series
Designers lead practices to focus on complex social-technical systems, however, most of the time they forget that they should also be embedded in the social structure they intend to change. Recently, researchers have been giving increased attention to “reflexivity” in design, but there has been limited exploration of designers’ long-term engagement within the design object, particularly in community-based social innovation. We utilized the constructivist grounded theory to analyze the reflexive discourse of three practitioners, exploring their understanding of the social structure, their own identities, and the impact of reflexivity on their subsequent design actions. This study represents a preliminary inquiry …

Guiding Into The Unknown. A Dialogue Between Design And Yoga For Mindful Design Education, Estelle Berger
Guiding Into The Unknown. A Dialogue Between Design And Yoga For Mindful Design Education, Estelle Berger
IASDR Conference Series
This paper builds on wider research studying designers’ posture, understood as the specific way in which professional activity is invested, given substance, meaning and justification. Awareness on posture is even more important in design teaching and leadership, as individuals take responsibility for guiding others. But, in complex and uncertain environments, knowledge holding has become less important than continuous learning. “Guiding into the unknown” questions the meaning and very possibility of accompanying intimate processes of transformation, far beyond professional training as commonly understood. Outside of content, what emerges in such relationships? In this investigation, yoga is mobilized as a both philosophical …
