A Study Of Relative Ionic Mobility Of Alkali Ions In Dilute Alkali-Boron Trioxide Glasses As Deduced From Space Charge Considerations, Theodore J. Planje Jan 1950

A Study Of Relative Ionic Mobility Of Alkali Ions In Dilute Alkali-Boron Trioxide Glasses As Deduced From Space Charge Considerations, Theodore J. Planje

Doctoral Dissertations

"The extensive investigations in the past have conclusively established that the alkali ions are responsible for the electrical conductivity of glass in both the brittle and viscous states; however, with the exception of one investigation in the brittle state, little consideration has been given to determination of the mobility of the alkali ion in such glassy systems. A review of the literature pertaining to the electrical conductivity of glass is presented.

A method, based on the rate of development of the ionic space charge responsible for polarization of conductivity cell employing direct current voltages, is proposed as a means for …

The Determination Of The Solubility Of Hafnium Oxide In Aqueous Solution By The Radioactive Tracer Technique, Hampden O. Banks Jan 1950

The Determination Of The Solubility Of Hafnium Oxide In Aqueous Solution By The Radioactive Tracer Technique, Hampden O. Banks

Masters Theses

"To date, there is no information in the open literature concerning the solubility of hafnium oxide in water other than the fact that it is very insoluble. This lack of experimental information is due, partly, to the fact that hafnium is a relatively new addition to the list of known elements"--Introduction, page 1.

Periodic Heat Flow In A Semi-Infinite Solid, Warren George Heidbrier Jan 1950

Periodic Heat Flow In A Semi-Infinite Solid, Warren George Heidbrier

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to determine by analytical means the temperature within a homogeneous semi-infinite solid, as a function of time, while the solid is receiving heat periodically by radiation on its one flat surface. Periodic heat flow means that heat flow is a continuous function of time and repeats itself at regular intervals. A semi-infinite solid has only one bounding plane and extends to infinity in all other directions...Much of this work deals with the soil temperatures of the earth both at the surface and at various depths. The surface of the earth is subjected to daily …

Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall Jan 1950

Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to install a hard drawn copper pipe approximately 1/2 inch in diameter, and approximately 35 feet long in a vertical position. The copper pipe is to have pressure takeoff points at various distances along the length of the pipe. The purpose of these takeoffs is to measure the pressure of the water at the point of takeoff in the pipe. The water is to be forced into the pipe, assisted by gravity, thereby causing a pressure of some measurable quanity [sic] greater than absolute zero pressure. The discharge was to be by volumetric measurement, …

Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Rate Measurements Of Rapid Gas Reactions, Erich Rolaff Jan 1950

Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Rate Measurements Of Rapid Gas Reactions, Erich Rolaff

Masters Theses

"The present study on rapid gas reactions was initiated with two main goals in view. The first objective was the development of equipment and methods for the treatment of problems arising in extremely rapid gas phase reactions. In recent years, with the advent of large scale applications of gas turbines and rocket motors, the process of high speed gas reactions, especially those of combustion and oxidation have become of increasing importance...The second main goal of the work was to apply the methods and equipment developed to the investigation of chemical systems of interest"--Introduction, page 1-2.

The Precipitation-Runoff Relationship On The Grand River Basin Of Missouri And Iowa, J. Kent Roberts Jan 1950

The Precipitation-Runoff Relationship On The Grand River Basin Of Missouri And Iowa, J. Kent Roberts

Masters Theses

"In the study of a drainage basin which is to be utilized for water supply or water power, there is frequently a dearth or complete lack of runoff data, though precipitation data are almost always available. The Water Resources Branch of the United States Geological Survey maintains gaging stations on various streams and runoff records from these streams are available from their publications and offices. Many of these runoff records cover a considerable number of years, and are entirely sufficient for use in an analysis of any drainage basin covered by such data. Some of these gaging stations have not …

An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr. Jan 1950

An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr.

Masters Theses

"Mason Inlet. North Carolina is a lagoonal marsh area with warm-temperate water, the salinity ranging from fresh to salt water. Nine collecting stations comprise an ecological gradient across the environment.

Forty-two species of foraminifera are recorded from the inlet, ranging in their affinities from brackish water to open-sea facies. Several extensions of range are recorded both northward and southward.

Substratum conditions apparently control the distribution of foraminifera within the inlet. Clean, fine sand provided the largest faunal populations. A depauperate assemblage was found in an inorganic, argillaceous substratum. The largest population of arenaceous forms was found at the channel through …

Twelfth Grade Public School Business Students Deficient In Fundamentals, Jeannette Lawhun Jan 1950

Twelfth Grade Public School Business Students Deficient In Fundamentals, Jeannette Lawhun

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Fundamentals or basic tool subjects of education is an extremely timely topic at present, vital to continuing education, as is every other subject which animates, vitalizes, facilitates, and expedites learning, training, living, and self-realization of youth. This is particularly evident when considering the difficulties in the process and experience of education encountered by secondary pupils today. On every hand we are faced with appealing facts and figures--realities. Typical of these facts are some data in regard to drop outs from six successive classes from a school of Z County, Michigan, which groups had a combined total of …

A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Grating Spectrograph For Far Ultra Violet Spectroscopy, Lawrey Huber Chapin Jan 1950

A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Grating Spectrograph For Far Ultra Violet Spectroscopy, Lawrey Huber Chapin

Masters Theses

"Spectroscopy, in the region of the far ultraviolet from 100 Angstroms to 1000 Angstroms, requires special equipment and techniques, inasmuch as these wavelengths are highly absorbed by air. Many gases have resonant frequencies corresponding to the wavelengths mentioned and hence absorption bands appear in the spectrograms obtained by using spectrographs for the visible region. One solution of the problem of obtaining data in this region is to construct a spectrograph from which all intervening gas molecules have been removed, thus eliminating the absorbing material. A vacuum of 10⁻⁴ mm. of mercury is necessary to reduce the absorption to a value …

Observations On A New Cystophorous Cercaria From Marine Snails, Jack Edward Copsey Jan 1950

Observations On A New Cystophorous Cercaria From Marine Snails, Jack Edward Copsey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A survey of the trematode parasites of marine fishes of Tomales and Bodega Bays, California, was instituted In the Spring of 1948. Many adult forms were obtained, but the search progressively narrowed Itself to a study of the larval trematodss of an area of Tomales Bay, known, as Nick's Cove. Here an interesting cystophorous cercaria was discovered in the littoral snail, Thais emarglnata.

The Presidential Campaign Of 1948, Edward John Hallauer Jan 1950

The Presidential Campaign Of 1948, Edward John Hallauer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the sprint of 1948, President Harry S. Truman's chances of being re-elected to the presidency of the United States seemed very dubious. It was uncertain that he would even secure the Democratic nomination for that office.

Truman's pre-convention Western trip. In the early summer of 1948 President Truman left the Capitol on a supposedly non-political Western trip. Although his aids insisted the journey was to be non-political, the fiction deceived no one. However, it enabled the President to charge off the cost of the excursion to his $30,000 a year travel allowance instead of sending the bill to a …

Survey Of The Play Therapy Clinic At The College Of The Pacific From February, 1948 To February, 1949, Donald Leong Fong

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this historical survey is to present a well organized statement of the activities of the play therapy clinic at the College of the Pacific and to analyze and evaluate the findings . One year after the origin of the clinic , there was felt the need for a survey. The writer has had many opportunities to observe the functions and the operation of the clinic, and he has felt that the activities and objectives of the clinic should be defined clearly in writing so that the beginning students at the clinic may have a more adequate approach …

An Analysis Of Romain Rolland, Mildred Lagomarsino Jan 1950

An Analysis Of Romain Rolland, Mildred Lagomarsino

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The first fifty years of Romain Rolland’s life were spent in inconspicuous and almost solitary labors. From then on this name became a storm center of European discussion

The significance of his life’s work becomes plain only when it is contemplated as a whole. It was slowly produced, for it had to encounter great dangers; it was a gradual revelation, tardily consummated. The foundations of this splendid structure were deeply dug in the firm ground of knowledge, and were laid upon the hidden masonry of years spent in isolation. Owing to the strength of its foundations, to the solidity of …

Rockbursts, Christian Maurice Colson Jan 1950

Rockbursts, Christian Maurice Colson

Masters Theses

"This paper does not pretend to originality; it is an attempt to bring to light the causes and the mechanism of rockbursts, as exposed in the literature. Furthermore, an endeavor has been made to give a comprehensive picture of the prediction, prevention, and control methods of rockbursts. Briefly, what has been done in the field of rockbursts, and what remains open to investigation is submitted to the reader. The choice of rockbursts as a thesis subject appears to be justified by the geologic interest of the question. Detailed geologic observations, and particularly the recording of all the structural features which …

The Reflection Coefficient At The Truncated Corner Of A Rectangular Wave Guide, John Raymond Barcroft Jan 1950

The Reflection Coefficient At The Truncated Corner Of A Rectangular Wave Guide, John Raymond Barcroft

Masters Theses

"The term wave guide refers to a hollow conducting tube (usually of rectangular or circular cross section) filled with a dielectric (or vacuum) and used for the transmission of electromagnetic waves. We shall consider the guide to be bounded by a perfect conductor and to be filled with a lossless homogeneous isotropic dielectric (or vacuum). The electromagnetic wave in the guide must of course satisfy Maxwell's equation. It must also satisfy the boundary condition that there be no tangential component of electric field at the surface of the conductor. If the electromagnetic waves traveling along the guide meet a discontinuity …

The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Face-Centered Cubic Lattice, Charles Robert Bonnell Jan 1950

The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Face-Centered Cubic Lattice, Charles Robert Bonnell

Masters Theses

"It is generally accepted that a normal crystalline solid can be pictured at absolute zero as an assembly of atoms at rest arranged at periodic lattice points. Since at higher temperatures each molecule becomes a harmonic oscillator about its lattice point, it is necessary to know the distribution of normal modes of vibration in order to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the lattice...Many approaches have been made to get a simple solution of the problem, but either accuracy is sacrificed for simplicity, or the solutions demand a very considerable amount of labor. The classical theories failed to explain the change …

Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery Jan 1950

Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery

Masters Theses

"The study of the geology and mineralization of the Crystal Mine was undertaken at the suggestion of Mr. Dodson G. Gibson of the Crystal Fluorspar Company, who allowed access to the mine and its records for this purpose. The problem was to develop a system of prospecting the so-called bedded-replacement fluorspar deposits of Hardin County, Illinois. It is believed that an economically feasible method has been developed. This method involves not only the actual finding of fluorspar, but also serves as a guide in revealing structural trends suggestive of mineralization.

The fluorspar deposits of the Crystal Mine are representative of …

Efficiency Studies Of The Effect Of Moisture On The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Georges J. Vigier Jan 1950

Efficiency Studies Of The Effect Of Moisture On The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Georges J. Vigier

Masters Theses

"Many years of practice have resulted in the standardization of several types of scrapers which are now commonly manufactured for use in mining. Although experience has brought out much information on scraping operations, no systematic studies of the efficiency of mine scrapers have been carried out before the experimental works done in the last few years at Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. "Purpose of Problem": The purpose of this present study is to consider the effect which moisture in the muck has on the efficiency as regards power consumption and amount of material scraped, of different types of mine …

Effects Of Higher Speed Explosives In Drift Rounds, Harve Preston Nelson Jan 1950

Effects Of Higher Speed Explosives In Drift Rounds, Harve Preston Nelson

Masters Theses

"There is much still to be learned of what takes place in the actual explosive zone of a rock blast. Many factors, both known and unknown, have individual and collective effects. A program is now in progress by the Mining Department of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy for developing and preserving information about some of the factors affecting the use of explosives. Some work has been done. More is now being completed by Messrs. R. J. Jones and J. B. H. Fitz-William. Present plans call for continuing the research and gathering data on this subject which is so important …

Calibration Of Weirs By Means Of Critical Flow And Specific Energy, Robert A. Rapp Jan 1950

Calibration Of Weirs By Means Of Critical Flow And Specific Energy, Robert A. Rapp

Masters Theses

"For many years man has been relying more each day upon metering devices to measure the flow of fluids in industry. The orifice, orifice meter, venturi meter, pitot tube, nozzle, flume and the weir have been employed, each having its own particular advantage.

In this parade of metering progress, the contracted weir has long been the forgotten brother of the suppressed weir. In almost every textbook on hydraulics or fluid mechanics, the following words appear, "end contractions are to be avoided where the weir cannot be calibrated". This skepticism and the length or absurdity of some contracted weir formulas led …

The Transformation Of The Aluminum-Zinc Eutectoid Alloy At Subcritical Temperatures, Thomas Joseph Burke Jan 1950

The Transformation Of The Aluminum-Zinc Eutectoid Alloy At Subcritical Temperatures, Thomas Joseph Burke

Masters Theses

"Interest in the mechanism of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, especially as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain, has resulted in the application of similar heat treatment studies to the eutectoid transformations in other alloy systems. The study of the eutectoid transformation is of both fundamental and industrial interest because past experience has shown that these studies yielded much information concerning the nature and mechanism of the changes in eutectoid alloys during the decomposition of the phase stable at high temperatures and has also contributed much toward the development of new properties to …

Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke Jan 1950

Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke

Masters Theses

"The mining industry has long been criticised severely because of its high rate of accident occurrence. Statistics, which, however, are not strictly comparable show that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. Figures such as these are by no means comforting to mining men. They constitute a challenge to the industry that cannot be ignored.

It must be remembered that any type of mining is more hazardous than most or the other major occupations. …

The Interior Plan Of A Workable Little Theater For Napa College, Dayton Coffey Jan 1950

The Interior Plan Of A Workable Little Theater For Napa College, Dayton Coffey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Considered from the viewpoint of drama and stagecraft instructors, many of our school theater buildings are inadequate. Visits to numerous high school and college auditoriums in northern California and contact with faculty members using them have convinced the writer of the need for improvement to campus theater planning. The auditorium and little theater in the recently constructed Franklin school in Stockton, California, are good examples of poor planning. In the writer's opinion the auditorium is too large and the little theater too small for either of them to give practical service, especially in relation to their construction costs.

That successful …

An Investigation Of Parental Influence On The Speech Development Of The Child, Margaret Bradshaw Ropolo Jan 1950

An Investigation Of Parental Influence On The Speech Development Of The Child, Margaret Bradshaw Ropolo

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Relatively little material has been written about teaching a child to speak. That a child does learn to talk seems well supported by most authorities; and this is based upon experimental evidence. Just how a child can be taught to speak is not so widely discussed. Many writers have ignored this aspect of speech development, and the author is inclined to believe that many parents are completely unaware of it. The number of speech defectives in the country today indicates widespread ignorance of this problem.

It is the purpose of this study (1) to show how parents can aid the …

Factors Relating To Unification In The Galt Area, Martin Anthony Cabalzar Jan 1950

Factors Relating To Unification In The Galt Area, Martin Anthony Cabalzar

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study is an outgrowth of a long felt need to make a survey of the existing district organization of t h e Gait Area to determine the educational effectiveness of the organizational pattern now in use. If the quality of educational opportunity offered by a given area is dependent upon the number of children plus taxable resources, does the present organizational pattern provide an equal opportunity to all children of the area?

Studies On The Ecological Distribution Of The Genus Tegula At Bodega Bay, California, Allen Emmert Breed Jan 1950

Studies On The Ecological Distribution Of The Genus Tegula At Bodega Bay, California, Allen Emmert Breed

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper is primarily a study of the factors contributing to the distribution of Tegula funebralis and Tegula brunnea in the vicinity of Bodega Bay, California. The two species seldom appear extensively together in the same zone. Tegula brunnea is found on the exposed outer coast of Tomales Point, but not in the immediate zone of Tegula funebralis. Tegula funebralis is found at some points north of Dillon Beach, but it is rarely in the presence of abundant Tegula brunnea. The writer hopes that his efforts may lay a basis for more ecological studies of this genera on the Pacific …

The purpose of this study is to determine the adequacy of high school physics laboratory work for general education. The problems involved to achieve this purpose were: the determination of the outcomes of high school physics laboratory work; the determination of the objectives of science instruction in general education; and the evaluation of the outcomes of the first in terms of the second.

An Analysis Of The Humanism Of Euripides As Expressed In His Plays And Reflected In Selected Plays Of Modern Drama, Robert Henry English Jan 1950

An Analysis Of The Humanism Of Euripides As Expressed In His Plays And Reflected In Selected Plays Of Modern Drama, Robert Henry English

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Because of the great importance of the human element in the drama of today we shall attempt to trace it from its first great exponent down to our times. Therefore, within the following pages we shall conduct an analysis of the humanism of Euripides as expressed in his plays and reflected in selected plays of modern drama. Our analysis, by necessity, shall have a six-fold purpose; (1) to analyze briefly the characteristics of the Attic theatre for which Euripides wrote; (2) to study the life and philosophy of Euripides in order to determine the presence of humanism; (3) to conduct …

Trypanosoma Barbari, A New Species From The Newt Triturus Torosus, Donald Lewis Lehmann Jan 1950

Trypanosoma Barbari, A New Species From The Newt Triturus Torosus, Donald Lewis Lehmann

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Whlle making studies of the parasites of fishes and amphibians at the Pacific Marine Station, Dillon Beach, California, during August, 1949, the writer encountered a hitherto unreported trypanasome from a female Triturus torosua. From the information obtained from the one smear, which was stained, the animal was presumed to be monomorphic, However, during February, 1950, a search was made expressly for the purpose of' obtaining specimens of this Pacific Coast newt, and of the eight animals examined six were parasitized. Contrary to the primary observations, evidence was accumulated which proved beyond any doubt that the flagellate is polymorphic and that, …
