The Value Of Platform Art To A College Student, Jeanette Dobrinski Jul 1938

The Value Of Platform Art To A College Student, Jeanette Dobrinski

Bachelors’ Theses

Our colleges have not yet placed platform art on the basis that it deserves. Too often it is regard d as an art with little or no practical value, and where only "talented" pupils specialize in the subject.

It is the hope of the writer that this thesis may be instrumental in correcting this misconception by showing that platform art is a vital part or education and worthy of study.

Theses

This thesis is offered as partial fulfilment for the degree of Chemical Engineer at the Newark College of Engineering. It covers a very new subject - one which has been rather intensively developed by several investigators during the past three years. The writer has had the fortunate opportunity of working on organic ion-exchange materials at the Ellis-Foster Co., which kindly gave permission through Mr. Carleton Ellis for the publication of experimental results. Many thanks are due to Dr. Frank B. Root, the laboratory director, whose gracious, constructive criticisms aided the writer in all phases of the work.

Shakespeare's Use Of The Ghost In His Tragedies, John Carl Burcham Jun 1938

Shakespeare's Use Of The Ghost In His Tragedies, John Carl Burcham

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this study is to set forth the idea, already conceded generally, that Shakespeare was a supreme dramatic artist; that he became supreme through creative genius that affected all that came under his magic hand; that the purpose of his creative efforts was to produce a poetic, or dramatic, illusion. And the focal point of this paper will be that the ghost in Shakespeare was, in his own mind, as much his own creation as was any other dramatic device he used.

Innovations In The Vocabulary Of Christopher Marlowe. A Dictionary Of New Words, Word Meanings, Forms And Functions, Urvin Rundle

English Language and Literature ETDs

The present study proposes to fill this gap in our knowledge of Marlowe’s attitudes by an objective study of the relationship between elements in his diction and the principal language movements of his time. Since these movements are all characterized by innovations of words, word-meanings, forms, and functions, our study resolves itself into an examination of such innovations in the language of Marlowe.

The Indians Of New Mexico In The Civil War, Mary Bewley

History ETDs

This paper is a study of the place of the New Mexico Indians in the Civil War and of their relationship to the governments involved. The part which New Mexico played in the struggle between the North and South was so overshadowed by the conflict in the East that little mention of it is made in general accounts. The Indian as a participant has received even less consideration.

Some Phases Of The Economic Policy Of The Confederation Congress, 1781-1785, Horace Bernard Smith Jun 1938

Some Phases Of The Economic Policy Of The Confederation Congress, 1781-1785, Horace Bernard Smith

Masters Theses

The story of the efforts of the Confederation Congress to direct the steps of the "Babe of the Revolution" during the critical period of its early infancy is somewhat like the story of the mother who knows what the sick child in her arms needs to effect his recovery but is powerless to obtain the remedy. Long before the meeting of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, many leaders in Congress knew that ultimately more power must be given to the central government if the United States were to take its rightful place among the nations of the world.

A Study Of The Practices Of A Selected Group Of Fifty Employed Women In Knox County In The Buying And Care Of Hosiery, Ruth Deford Jun 1938

A Study Of The Practices Of A Selected Group Of Fifty Employed Women In Knox County In The Buying And Care Of Hosiery, Ruth Deford

Masters Theses

(Conclusions) The writer has drawn the following conclusions based on this study of the buying practices of a selected group of fifty employed women: (1) Some concerted effort should be made to teach people the meaning of terms used in advertising and selling hose. (2) Appearance and serviceability seem to be important factors in buying hose, but appearance makes a stronger appeal. (3) Generally speaking, price paid does not seem to be an indication of service which can be expected.

A Study On The Origin Of Banded Agate, James E. Driscoll

Agate in any of its varieties presents numerous problems in regard to its origin. Religious Education In Prisons, John L. Gwin Jun 1938

Religious Education In Prisons, John L. Gwin

Masters Theses

The problem of crime is one of growing importance, and every means available should be used to reform and train the prisoner so that when he leaves the penitentiary he will go out and become a useful member of society. The average age of American prisoners is nineteen years. This means that after a few years most of our prisoners will re-enter society, and certainly it must be possible to do much to help these young people to readjust themselves to our social order.

Time Of Set And Ph In Silicic Acid Gels, E August Laurence Jun 1938

Time Of Set And Ph In Silicic Acid Gels, E August Laurence

Honors Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the time of set and the hydrogen ion concentration of a silicic acid gel, basic in nature. A gel prepared from a mixture of 1.2511 normal sodium silicate solution and 1.0158 normal ammonium chloride was used for this purpose. The possibility of measuring the hydrogen ion concentration by the indicator method was used with considerable success by Prasad and Halliangadi (1). Previous work on this problem at Union by Marotta (2) pointed out the uncertainty of the glass electrode method due to the effect of the silicate on the electrode. The possibility …

A Pasture Program For Tennessee, Guy Robert Kirk Jun 1938

A Pasture Program For Tennessee, Guy Robert Kirk

Masters Theses

When it is considered that out of 19,085,837 acres of land in farms in Tennessee, 5,643,998 acres are in pasture, one readily sees the importance of pasture in the State. Of the total acreage in farm land, 15 per cent is in plowable pasture.

The farmers of Tennessee have long used their pasture land as a source of free feed. The necessity for replacing the fertility removed by grazing animals has not been considered. Very little attention has been given to reseeding pastures which are running out. Livestock have been allowed to graze at will, often times, completely denuding the …

The Hydrolysis Of Ethyl Orthosilicate And Preparation Of Silicic Acid Gels From It, Matthew Woodrow Wilson Jun 1938

The Hydrolysis Of Ethyl Orthosilicate And Preparation Of Silicic Acid Gels From It, Matthew Woodrow Wilson

Honors Theses

Ethyl orthosilicate, (C2H5O)4Si, the ester of orthosilicic acid and ethyl alcohol, is a colorless liquid boiling at 165° C. It can be hydrolyzed to produce what is known as a hydrated silica sol or a sol of condensed silicic acid and ethyl alcohol; and under suitable conditions the hydrated silica sol or condensed silicic acid sol can be made to form a gel. It was decided to study the rates of the hydrolysis and gel formation.

We have thus two reactions to be studied: 1. Eteyl orthosilicate + water ► silicic acid or condensed silicic acid + ethyl alcohol. 2. …
