The Level Of Cultural Responsiveness And Its Preparation Among Grand Valley State University’S Occupational Therapy Graduates, Kathleen Kovach, Rebecca Palmitier, Robyn Ward Dec 2012

The Level Of Cultural Responsiveness And Its Preparation Among Grand Valley State University’S Occupational Therapy Graduates, Kathleen Kovach, Rebecca Palmitier, Robyn Ward

Education

Background: In a field that aims to be holistic and client-centered, occupational therapists need to consider their client's culture. Culture is comprised of values, beliefs, and lifestyles and will affect the therapy process (Cheung, Shah, & Muncer, 2002; Cole, Stevenson, & Rogers, 2009). To truly treat clients holistically, therapists need to be culturally responsive in their practice, considering factors which influence therapy and its outcomes. Occupational therapy education programs, therefore, need to prepare its students to be culturally responsive practitioners. This research examined whether Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Occupational Therapy (OT) graduates are culturally responsive and how the program …

Radar Based Navigation In Unknown Terrain, Kyle J. Kauffman Dec 2012

Radar Based Navigation In Unknown Terrain, Kyle J. Kauffman

Theses and Dissertations

There is a great need to develop non-GPS based methods for positioning and navigation in situations where GPS is not available. This research focuses on the development of an Ultra-Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (UWB-OFDM) radar as a navigation sensor in GPS-denied environments. A side-looking vehicle-fixed UWB-OFDM radar is mounted to a ground or aerial vehicle continuously collecting data. A set of signal processing algorithms and methods are developed which use the raw radar data to aide in calculating the vehicle position and velocity via a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approach. The radar processing algorithms detect strong, persistent, and …

Software Requirements As Executable Code, Karen Eileen Wasielewski Morand Dec 2012

Software Requirements As Executable Code, Karen Eileen Wasielewski Morand

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project analyzed the effectiveness of using Story Testing frameworks to create an application directly from user specifications. It did this by taking an example business application with "traditional" specifications and rewriting those specifications in three different Story Testing Frameworks - Cucumber, FitNesse, and JBehave. Analysis of results drew the following conclusions: 1) Story Testing can help prove a project's completeness, 2) Specifications are still too technical, 3) Implementation is not overly complex, and 4) Story Testing is worth it. It proposed future research around evaluating natural languages and seeking more user-friendly ways of writing specifications in a natural language.

Filtering Efficiency And Feeding Mechanisms Of Daphnia Pulex On Microcystis Aeruginosa And Nannochloropsis, Elizabeth Orlowicz

Honors Theses and Capstones

The filtering and feeding rate of Daphnia pulex from the Old Durham Reservoir, Durham, NH, were measured to determine the feeding efficiency on different concentrations of non-toxic Nannochloropsis (Class Eustigmatophyceae) and toxigenic cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa. Direct observations of thoracic appendage beats and post-abdominal rejections were also measured at 5*105 and 106 cells mL-1 concentrations of Nannochloropsis and M. aeruginosa to examine the feeding mechanisms of the D. pulex. In the presence of increasing Nannochloropsis concentrations, the filtering rates decreased and the feeding rates increased. When exposed to M. aeruginosa, both the filtering and feeding …

Regulation Of The Mouse And Human Β-Globin Genes By Krüppel Like Transcription Factors Klf1 And Klf2, Yousef N. Alhashem Dec 2012

Regulation Of The Mouse And Human Β-Globin Genes By Krüppel Like Transcription Factors Klf1 And Klf2, Yousef N. Alhashem

Theses and Dissertations

Krüppel-like factors KLF1 and KLF2 are closely related transcription factors with three zinc finger domains in their carboxy-termini. KLF1 (erythroid Krüppel-like factor, or EKLF) plays essential roles in embryonic and adult erythropoiesis. KLF2 is a positive regulator of the mouse and human embryonic β- globin genes. KLF1 and KLF2 have overlapping roles in embryonic erythropoiesis, as demonstrated using single and double knockout (KO) mouse models. Ablation of the KLF1 or KLF2 gene causes embryonic lethality, and double KO embryos are more anemic and die sooner than either single KO. We have shown that KLF1 and KLF2 positively regulate the human …

Oxazoloporphyrins, Oxazolochlorins, And Oxazolobacteriochlorins, Junichi K. Ogikubo

Doctoral Dissertations

Since the serendipitous discovery of oxazole-containing porphyrins over 30 years ago, this class of porphyrinoid macrocycles remained largely unexplored. This thesis is the first systematic study of the syntheses and optical properties of this class of macrocycles. Specifically, this thesis investigates the scope and limits of synthesizing various oxazole containing chlorin and bacteriochlorin chromophores. The multi-step syntheses described are based on the OsO4-mediate dihydroxylation of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin to form diolchlorin . This diol is converted into various oxazolones and/or a-substituted oxazolines via one of two principal pathways; through MnO4mediated oxidation or NaIO4-mediated oxidative …

Forest Regeneration On The Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, Manette E. Sandor

Master's Theses

Woody species diversity of secondary forest has the potential to converge with that found in old growth forest. This study is the first to examine multiple aspects of species and reproductive trait diversity, and their relationship to each other, across a successional chronosequence. Species richness and species diversity increases with increasing age of forest. Diaspore size and diversity as well as fruit size generally increased with increasing age of forest, but fruit size diversity did not. Abundance of animal-dispersed species increased whereas wind-dispersed species decreased in abundance over succession. Insect-pollinated individuals were most abundant overall. Diaspore diversity, pollination diversity, and …

A Nonparametric Approach To Segmentation Of Ladar Images, Eric A. Buschelman Dec 2012

A Nonparametric Approach To Segmentation Of Ladar Images, Eric A. Buschelman

Theses and Dissertations

The advent of advanced laser radar (ladar) systems that record full-waveform signal data has inspired numerous inquisitions which aspire to extract additional, previously unavailable, information about the illuminated scene from the collected data. The quality of the information, however, is often related to the limitations of the ladar camera used to collect the data. This research project uses full-waveform analysis of ladar signals, and basic principles of optics, to propose a new formulation for an accepted signal model. A new waveform model taking into account backscatter reflectance is the key to overcoming specific deficiencies of the ladar camera at hand, …

Defeating Authoritarian State Structures In Semi-Democratic Countries: Lessons From Turkey's Justice And Development Party, Gulcan Saglam

Political Science Theses

Political success in semi-democratic countries has two aspects: shifting the balance of power in one’s favor and maintaining it. This thesis seeks to examine how the AKP has succeeded in shifting the balance of power in its favor while its predecessor the Welfare Party did not. Focusing on electoral success, existing research primarily lists center-periphery conflict, moderation, class struggle, party organization, and failures of others as the main determinants. Yet the significance of reining in the power of the Kemalist state structure has been mostly disregarded. Therefore, with a comparison of the AKP (2002-2007) and the Welfare Party (1996-1997) governments, …

Public Expenditure, Environmental Pollution And Endogenous Economic Growth., Trishita Ray Barman Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Sources of Economic Growth and the Definition of Steady-State EquilibriumEconomic growth is defined as a continuous increase in national income taking place over a time horizon. According to the neoclassical theory of economic growth there are three sources of economic growth: (i) capital accumulation, (ii) growth of labour force and (iii) technological progress. The steady-state growth equilibrium is defined as a state where all major macro-economic variables grow at the same rate so that the ratios of these variables remain unchanged over time. For example, in the one sector aggregative model like that of Solow (1956), capital and labour grow at …

Role Of Deg/Enac Channels Expressed In Glia In C. Elegans Touch Sensitivity, Lu Han Dec 2012

Role Of Deg/Enac Channels Expressed In Glia In C. Elegans Touch Sensitivity, Lu Han

Open Access Dissertations

Neuronal DEG/ENaC Na+ channels have been implicated in touch sensation. For example, MEC-4 is expressed in touch neurons in C. elegans and mediates gentle touch response. Similarly, homologous mammalian ASIC2 and ASIC3 are expressed in sensory neurons and produce touch phenotypes when knocked out in mice. Here, we show that novel DEG/ENaC subunits DELM-1 and DELM-2 are expressed in glia associated with touch neurons in C. elegans and that their knock-out causes defects in mechanosensory behaviors related to nose touch and foraging, which are mediated by OLQ and IL1 sensory neurons. Cell-specific rescue supports the idea that DELM-1 and DELM-2 …
