Jerome On Virginity: An Analysis Of St. Jerome's Position On Consecrated Virginity And Celibacy And Their Relation To Marriage, Daniel Kempin Dec 1996

Jerome On Virginity: An Analysis Of St. Jerome's Position On Consecrated Virginity And Celibacy And Their Relation To Marriage, Daniel Kempin

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

How and why Jerome came to be a champion of this cause is a story in itself, and his own accounts of his personal experience are often emotional and dramatic. Of greater significance, however, is the theological legacy to which Jerome contributed by his strong emphasis on Christian celibacy, particularly consecrated virginity. In this paper I will investigate Jerome's position on Christian celibacy and virginity, including the influences that contributed to his position, in order to identify the theological implications that were a part of his position, and to discuss briefly the exegesis with which he supported his position.

Some Problems Of Continuum Percolation., Anish Sarkar Dr. Dec 1996

Some Problems Of Continuum Percolation., Anish Sarkar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The model of continuum percolation can be described as follows. We start with a homogeneous Poisson point process X. At each point of X we centre a ball with a random radius such that the radii corresponding to different points are independent of each other and also independent of the Poisson process X. In this way, the space is divided into two regiorns, the covered region or the occupied region consisting of the region which is covered by at least one ball, and the uncovered region or the vacant region which is complement of the covered region. In this dissertation …

Inspirational Creativity In The Foursquare Church, Shelley Mcbride

Seminary Masters Theses

From its very inception, the Foursquare denomination has functioned in the gifting of creativity. Just as in genetic coding family traits are passed down, there is a freedom of Spirit and blessing from God to be received by current Foursquare pastors from Aimee Semple McPherson's legacy of unique spiritual gifts. This denomination, once thought of as a cult, is now one of the fastest growing denominations in the United States and is known throughout the charismatic community worldwide. Each church in the denomination functions or is in process of receiving its own special or unique gift. This paper seeks to …

An Object-Oriented Discrete-Event Simulation System For Hierarchical Parallel Simulations, Kenneth W. Stauffer Dec 1996

An Object-Oriented Discrete-Event Simulation System For Hierarchical Parallel Simulations, Kenneth W. Stauffer

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to design and implement an object-oriented discrete-event simulation system which supports hierarchically constructed players in a parallel or distributed environment. This system design considers modularity and portability so additional modules may be implemented to experiment with new algorithms for both partitioning and synchronization. A simulation system which meets these requirements was partially implemented on an eight-node Intel Hypercube in C. A desired goal was to maintain the functionality of the existing BattleSim application. Test cases used measure the performance and correct operation of the new simulation architecture using a BattleSim subclass. Test results prove …

Student Modeling In An Intelligent Tutoring System, Jeremy E. Thompson Dec 1996

Student Modeling In An Intelligent Tutoring System, Jeremy E. Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores a new approach to modeling the student in an intelligent tutoring system (ITS), by providing a student model which learns new solutions from the student. A prototype of the new approach to ITS is demonstrated in the Euclidean geometry domain. Complete C++, CLIPS, and Tcl/Tk code listings are included in the appendices for reference. Adaptable multiple software agents were targeted for implementation, based on current literature. However, the student model is found to be maintainable without multiple software agents, while still allowing for tracking several possible solution paths when monitoring student solutions. This capability contradicts previous research …

Modeling And Simulation Of Optical Characteristics Of Microelectromechanical Mirror Arrays, Peter C. Roberts Dec 1996

Modeling And Simulation Of Optical Characteristics Of Microelectromechanical Mirror Arrays, Peter C. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) micromirror devices can be used to control the phase of a propagating light wavefront, and in particular to correct aberrations that may be present in the wavefront, due to either atmospheric turbulence or any other type of fixed or time and space varying aberrations. In order to shorten the design cycle of MEMS micromirror devices, computer software is developed to create, from MEMS micromirror device design data, a numerical model of the MEMS device. The model is then used to compute the far field diffraction pattern of a wavefront reflected from the device, and to predict the …

On Unifying Time And Uncertainty: The Probabilistic Temporal Network, Joel D. Young Dec 1996

On Unifying Time And Uncertainty: The Probabilistic Temporal Network, Joel D. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Complex real-world systems consist of collections of interacting processes/events. These processes change over time in response to both internal and external stimuli as well as to the passage of time. Many domains such as real-time systems diagnosis, (mechanized) story understanding, planning and scheduling, and financial forecasting require the capability to model complex systems under a unified framework to deal with both time and uncertainty. Existing uncertainty representations and existing temporal models already provide rich languages for capturing uncertainty and temporal information, respectively. Unfortunately, these partial solutions have made it extremely difficult to unify time and uncertainty in a way that …

Equalization Of A Non-Linear Phase Of A Low-Pass Filter, Rabih Khodor Dec 1996

Equalization Of A Non-Linear Phase Of A Low-Pass Filter, Rabih Khodor

Dissertations and Theses

In practice, an IIR filter can distort the information content of the signal because of its inherent non-linear phase characteristics introduced through the design of the filter. If the the receiver of the signal is the human ear, e.g., when a speech or music signal is to be processed, phase distortion is quite tolerable. But, in other applications it can be rejected as phase characteristics is required to be fairly linear. Applications of this type include data transmission, where the signal is to be interpreted by digital hardware, and image processing, where the signal is used to reconstruct an image …

An Asic Power Analysis System For Digital Cmos Design, Du Van Nguyen Dec 1996

An Asic Power Analysis System For Digital Cmos Design, Du Van Nguyen

Dissertations and Theses

Consumers demand for products with ever-increasing functionality, performance, and longer battery life is making low power a critical factor in most system designs. Lower-power designs are less expensive to produce, more reliable, and cost less to operate - factors which create a real competitive advantage. As a result, ASIC designers are demanding better ways to analyze the power of their designs.

In this thesis, an ASIC Power Analysis System (APAS) is developed. APAS is an interactive simulation-based power analysis tool. Using a non-intrusive design technique, APAS can dynamically "snap on" to an existing simulation environment. APAS currently supports three ASIC …

Nickel Catalyzed Cyclizations Of Alkynyl-Etones And Their Application To The Formal Synthesis Of Pentalenic Acid, Kevin Schlosser

Honors Theses

Pentalenic acid is a very important molecule because it is a biosynthetic intermediate of pentalenolactone, which has antibiotic effects on Grampositive/ negative bacteria and pathogenic fungi. These effects are due to its ability to inhibit glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase.1 However, the total synthesis of pentalenic acid is very lengthy.2 This project will begin the process of finding a more convenient route to pentalenic acid. Previously in this laboratory there have been experiments conducted in the cyclization of enones with nickel (0)3 It is hypothesized that this method can be used to shorten the preparation of pentalenic acid. As illustrated by the …

Ventilation Rates For Carassius Auratus During Changes In Dissolved Oxygen, Collin Nolan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This experiment was designed to determine whether dissolved oxygen concentrations would influence the ventilation rate of goldfish, Carassius auratus. Ventilation rate can be determined by counting opercular movements. Opercular movements of the same five goldfish were counted at three different levels of dissolved oxygen to determine whether there were differences in ventilation rates. Average ventilation rates were established for each of the three levels of dissolved oxygen and compared statistically. There were significant differences in the ventilation rates averages at each of the three levels. Carassius auratus will exhibit changes in ventilation rates when dissolved oxygen levels change.
