Positron Annihilation Studies Of Defects In Silicon, Peter J. Simpson Jan 1991

Positron Annihilation Studies Of Defects In Silicon, Peter J. Simpson

Digitized Theses

Measurements of Doppler-broadening of annihilation radiation from variable-energy positrons have been applied to examine the nature and distribution of defects in ion-irradiated silicon. Positron measurements were supplemented by ion backscattering/channeling to determine displaced atom distributions, and infrared absorption measurements to determine divacancy concentrations. Silicon (100) wafers were irradiated at 300K with helium ions at energies from 0.25 to 4.0 MeV and fluences from 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}13{rcub}{dollar} to 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}16{rcub}{dollar} cm{dollar}\sp{lcub}-2{rcub},{dollar} and with silicon ions at energies from 0.5 to 5.0 MeV and fluences from 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}11{rcub}{dollar} to 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}15{rcub}{dollar} cm{dollar}\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}.{dollar} Defect annealing was observed through the divacancy annealing stage {dollar}(\sim{dollar}470 to 570K). He-irradiated silicon was …

The Effects Of Self-Referencing In The Processing Of Linear Ordering Relations, Hsiao H. D'Ailly Jan 1991

The Effects Of Self-Referencing In The Processing Of Linear Ordering Relations, Hsiao H. D'Ailly

Digitized Theses

The purpose of the present research was to investigate the effects of self referencing in the processing of linear ordering relations in a task designed to simulate certain aspects of classroom mathematics instruction. In each of three experiments, undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology course were asked to read a series of paragraphs each of which contained a 5-term linear ordering relation (e.g., {dollar}\rm A>B>C>D>E).{dollar} After this information was encoded, subjects were asked to make pair-wise comparisons of these 5 terms. Two major factors were tested: the inclusion of a "You" term (Self-Referencing) among the …

Characterisation Of The Photosynthetic Responses Of Spring And Winter Wheat To Growth At Cold-Hardening Temperatures, Vaughan M. Hurry Jan 1991

Characterisation Of The Photosynthetic Responses Of Spring And Winter Wheat To Growth At Cold-Hardening Temperatures, Vaughan M. Hurry

Digitized Theses

In vivo room temperature chlorophyll a fluorescence coupled with CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} and O{dollar}\sb2{dollar} exchange are measured to determine the effect of cold-hardening on the photosynthetic capacity and the susceptibility to photoinhibition of six cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), covering a range of freezing tolerance. The role of the photosystem II (PSII) repair cycle in resistance to, and recovery from, photoinhibition is assessed at both low temperatures (5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C & {dollar}-3\sp\circ{dollar}C) and in the presence of the 70S protein synthesis inhibitor, chloramphenicol. The effect of long-term, repeated photoinhibitory events and sustained reduction in PSII efficiency on net carbon gained is also assessed.;Winter …

Characterization And Expression Of Polyubiquitin And Ubiquitin-Fusion Protein Genes In Tissues From Control And Heat-Shocked Maize Seedlings, Ling Liu Jan 1991

Characterization And Expression Of Polyubiquitin And Ubiquitin-Fusion Protein Genes In Tissues From Control And Heat-Shocked Maize Seedlings, Ling Liu

Digitized Theses

Ubiquitin is a highly conserved, 76 amino acid, heat-stable protein found in many eukaryotic cells, including Zea mays L. Northern and dot blot hybridization analyses, using the ubiquitin coding sequence as a probe, demonstrate that the ubiquitin genes in maize are constitutively expressed at a control temperature (25{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C), and that heat shock (42.5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C) induces an increase in polyribosome-associated ubiquitin mRNAs in the radicles (4-fold) and plumules (2-fold) of 5-day-old maize (inbred: Oh43) seedlings. These data imply that maize ubiquitin is a heat shock protein.;To assess the implication that maize ubiquitin is a heat shock protein encoded from genes whose expression …

Adam Naming And Aesop Fabling: Artist-Figures In The Prose Works Of Dylan Thomas, Ann Elizabeth Mayer Jan 1991

Adam Naming And Aesop Fabling: Artist-Figures In The Prose Works Of Dylan Thomas, Ann Elizabeth Mayer

Digitized Theses

The initial impetus for this study was two-fold: to explore the rich but relatively neglected prose works of Dylan Thomas, and to examine the numerous self-referential and metafictional instances within them. Many of the prose works contain representational forms such as dreams, fantasies, maps, books, and stories. Also predominant are a variety of artist figures, through whom Thomas explores the nature of creation and the medium with which he creates, through self-conscious acts of writing and telling. Thomas's life-long concern with the primacy of words, and his self-conscious role as an artist, have been surprisingly overlooked in his work.;Many of …

Regulation Of Porcine Thecal Cell Steroidogenesis By Locally Produced Factors, Heidi E. Engelhardt Jan 1991

Regulation Of Porcine Thecal Cell Steroidogenesis By Locally Produced Factors, Heidi E. Engelhardt

Digitized Theses

Regulation of steroidogenesis (measured by radioimmunoassay) by peptides produced within the ovary was investigated in monolayer cultures of porcine thecal cells (TC). In serum-free cultures LH but not FSH stimulated accumulation of androstenedione (Ad) and progesterone (P). No further accumulation of either steroid occurred after 19h. Addition of fetal bovine serum (FBS; optimal at 1%) maintained steroidogenesis for 3-4 days, but Ad production declined, and, in the presence of LH, P production increased. IGF-I plus LH markedly enhanced P production, an effect most pronounced after 3-4 days of treatment, and not associated with increases in DNA per well. Changes in …

Probabilistic Models Of Search State And Path Patterns In Hypertext Information Retrieval Systems, Liwen Qiu Jan 1991

Probabilistic Models Of Search State And Path Patterns In Hypertext Information Retrieval Systems, Liwen Qiu

Digitized Theses

The objective of this research is to discover the search state and path patterns through which users retrieve information in hypertext systems. The Markov model is used to describe users' search behaviour. As determined by the log-linear model test, the second-order Markov model is the best model. Search patterns of different user groups were studied by comparing the corresponding transition probability matrices. The comparisons were made based on the following factors: gender, search experience, search task, and the user's academic background. The statistical tests revealed that there were significant differences among all the groups being compared.;A three-way analysis of variance …

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe Jan 1991

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe

Digitized Theses

In this essay I present revisionary readings of four Victorian philosophers. I argue that each of them is fundamentally committed to a naturalistic philosophical project called psychologism. The psychologistic readings that this critical stance generates offer resources that may be exploited by contemporary philosophers pursuing their own naturalistic projects.;In the first chapter I sketch the structure and main points of the essay. In the second chapter I suggest that Mansel's Kantian psychologism manages to evade the criticisms of Husserl. This serves to highlight the distance between psychologism and contemporary logic. In the third chapter I argue that Whewell embraces a …

Richard Baxter, Puritan Churchman, Timothy R. Cooke Jan 1991

Richard Baxter, Puritan Churchman, Timothy R. Cooke

Digitized Theses

An examination of the writings and career of the English Puritan divine, Richard Baxter, 1615-1691, demonstrates that preconceptions of the nature of English Puritanism must be reassessed. An analysis of the activity, the personality, and the ideology of Richard Baxter is a case in point which indicates the need for this reassessment. Through a discussion of Baxter's spirituality, his doctrinal, ecclesiological, ecumenical, and political writings, both published and unpublished, an enhanced understanding will be afforded of the vitality and coherence of the English Puritans.;Just as Baxter can assist the student of early modern English history in comprehending the nature of …

Economic Growth: Dynamic Interactions With International Trade And Global Environment, Zhiqi Chen Jan 1991

Economic Growth: Dynamic Interactions With International Trade And Global Environment, Zhiqi Chen

Digitized Theses

The thesis comprises four essays that, through theoretical analysis, explore the dynamic impact of capital accumulation on international trade (Chapters 1 and 2) and the dynamic interaction between economic activities and the global climate (Chapters 3 and 4).;Chapter 1 presents a dynamic Heckscher-Ohlin model in which agents' labor supply and investment decisions are endogenous. It is shown that analogues to the major results of the standard Heckscher-Ohlin model are valid in this model. Using the model developed in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 studies the determinant of comparative advantage in the long-run between countries with identical preferences. It is shown that …

Organization Learning: A Sociocognitive Model Of Strategic Management, Mary M. Crossan Jan 1991

Organization Learning: A Sociocognitive Model Of Strategic Management, Mary M. Crossan

Digitized Theses

The traditional view of strategic management suggests that the performance of the organization is dependent upon the fit between its strategy and the internal and external environment. However, this rational-analytic view neglects the critical question of how organizations learn about their environment and then act on the knowledge/understanding. This dissertation develops a sociocognitive model of strategic management which is rooted in an organization learning paradigm. The sociocognitive model acts as a framework for identifying points of leverage to improve an organization's collective interpretation of the environment.;It is hypothesized that the ability to interpret complex, dynamic domains is likely to reside …

Assertoric Validity In Journalistic News Judgment, Hendrik Overduin Jan 1991

Assertoric Validity In Journalistic News Judgment, Hendrik Overduin

Digitized Theses

The thesis defended in this dissertation is that there is an objective, assertoric validity condition, or rationality constraint, on journalistic news judgments about reports that refer to events or states of affairs.;The dissertation locates such judgments in a Habermasian context of communicative action in which they are seen as making a unique, objective validity claim through the illocutionary force of published news narratives.;It is argued that neither truth of the information content of reports judged to be newsworthy, nor alleged qualities of the events reported, nor journalistic conventions can establish the validity of news judgments.;Using concepts from the mathematical theory …

Symbol And Sacrament: The Incarnational Aesthetic Of Christina Rossetti, Mary Arseneau Jan 1991

Symbol And Sacrament: The Incarnational Aesthetic Of Christina Rossetti, Mary Arseneau

Digitized Theses

This thesis attempts to establish that Christina Rossetti's particular religious milieu (of which the Oxford Movement was a prominent feature) was a formative influence not only on her religious poetry, but also on the pervasive aesthetic and symbolic practice that unifies the general and devotional sections of her volumes of poetry. Underlying the Oxford Movement (and its emphasis on the Incarnation, its revival of ceremonial in Anglo-Catholic worship, the renewed emphasis on sacrament that it engendered, and the sacramental aesthetic characteristic of Tractarian poetics) is a belief that material creation is able to contain and communicate moral and spiritual meaning. …

Images Of Voice In "Paradise Lost", Elizabeth M. Sauer Jan 1991

Images Of Voice In "Paradise Lost", Elizabeth M. Sauer

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the relative status and authority of the poetic voices of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within a literary and socio-political context. The case against the monological function of the primary narrator has most recently been made by critics including Donald Bouchard and Jonathan Goldberg who discuss the dialogical nature of this speaker, and by Kathleen Swaim and Barbara Lewalski who examine the exchanges among the different narrators. Another scholar, Gordon Teskey, observes that before PL "few characters in non-dramatic literature appear as free as Milton's to choose their own story" (11). Milton's interpretive model of historical intervention …

Nonpioneering Strategy And Market Share Performance, Hadi Satyagraha Jan 1991

Nonpioneering Strategy And Market Share Performance, Hadi Satyagraha

Digitized Theses

Despite the prevalence of nonpioneers in most product-markets and their market share success in many, empirical studies on timing of market entry and market share performance have focused largely on market pioneers. However, there is reason to suspect that the findings for market pioneers will not be equally valid for nonpioneers because of the systematic differences in their sets of skills and resources.;This study began by postulating that successful market share strategies are different for market pioneers and nonpioneers. It proposed to test relevant variables hypothesized to affect the market share performance of nonpioneers: (1) timing of market entry; (2) …

Influence Of Cost Consciousness And Heuristic Approach On Online Search Performance, Jill Austin Jan 1991

Influence Of Cost Consciousness And Heuristic Approach On Online Search Performance, Jill Austin

Digitized Theses

This research used an experimental approach to investigate the relationship between cost consciousness, heuristic approach and recall in online searching. It also investigated some of the characteristics of the searcher that would be expected to influence heuristic approach, including familiarity with the search topic, familiarity with the database and anxiety. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used, where the factors were experience (expert/novice) and presence or absence of a cost consciousness treatment. Forty subjects in all searched the same two search questions. A verbal protocol technique was used, whereby subjects verbalized their thoughts while conducting their searches. The verbalizations …

Analysis Of Tax Policy Options For Singapore: A General Equilibrium Approach, Ngee Choon Chia Jan 1991

Analysis Of Tax Policy Options For Singapore: A General Equilibrium Approach, Ngee Choon Chia

Digitized Theses

This thesis analyzes tax policy options for Singapore. The first three substantive chapters evaluate the efficiency and distributive impacts of various tax alternatives using a static numerical general equilibrium model. One notable difference of this study from major general equilibrium tax studies for other countries is that instead of using the arithmetic sum of the Compensating and/or Equivalent variations across households, welfare impacts are evaluated using the concept of potential welfare gain/loss, based on Kaldor's (1939) weak compensation principle. The cost of tax distortions is sensitive to the criteria used to evaluate efficiency. To analyze the general equilibrium impacts of …

Metaphysical Concepts In West African Prose: Spiritual Significance And Aesthetic Implications, Kathleen A. Morrison Jan 1991

Metaphysical Concepts In West African Prose: Spiritual Significance And Aesthetic Implications, Kathleen A. Morrison

Digitized Theses

This dissertation examines how West African prose in English is informed and shaped by the underlying African world-view and its expression in the beliefs and practices of the ethnic group from which each writer originates. The world-view is of a cosmos controlled by multiple deities and spirits, a world in which the gods exist for man and in which power is not dichotomized as spiritual and physical, nor as good and evil. The study includes one autobiography and sixteen novels by eight writers from five ethnic backgrounds: Chinua Achebe (Igbo), Elechi Amadi (Ikwerre), Ayi Kwei Armah (Akan), Kofi Awoonor (Ewe), …

Essays On Hysteresis In Trade And Exchange Rate Pass-Through, Kong-Wing Chow Jan 1991

Essays On Hysteresis In Trade And Exchange Rate Pass-Through, Kong-Wing Chow

Digitized Theses

Chapter 1 of this thesis derives the long run general equilibrium of a home economy in a two-country overlapping generations model where agents' participation in production and the exchange rate are endogenous. We find that the presence of multiple equilibria is crucial for the existence of hysteresis defined as a change in the market structure of import or export markets, e.g. a change in the number of incumbent producers. With the presence of a positive network externality, the model will guarantee the possibility of hysteresis, i.e. multiple equilibria. Moreover, welfare is unambiguously increasing in the number of producers.;Chapter 2 applies …

The Regulation Of Multinational Enterprises Under Asymmetric Information, Horst H. Raff Jan 1991

The Regulation Of Multinational Enterprises Under Asymmetric Information, Horst H. Raff

Digitized Theses

This thesis investigates the effects of asymmetric information on the relationship between multinational enterprises (MNEs) and host countries. With incomplete information about a MNE's technology, the threat of expropriation does not always deter foreign direct investment (FDI), so that expropriation may actually occur with nonzero probability. Improvements in a MNE's investment alternatives, a rise in production costs or tax rates diminish the likelihood of expropriation. Low-cost countries are more likely than high-cost countries to expropriate MNEs. Low-cost industries simultaneously face higher tariffs and a higher expropriation rate.;Chapter three uses a principal-agent model to examine optimal host country taxation of a …

Les Romans De Louis Guilloux Entre 1927 Et 1942: Aux Frontieres Du Populisme (French Text), Monica Lebron Jan 1991

Les Romans De Louis Guilloux Entre 1927 Et 1942: Aux Frontieres Du Populisme (French Text), Monica Lebron

Digitized Theses

In 1942, Louis Guilloux was awarded the Prix Populiste for Le Pain des reves, a novel which, along with the six which preceded it, is generally considered to be representative of the populist literary trend. Guilloux's novels are profoundly significant representations of historical events which took place during the first half of the 20th Century. The effect of periods of political turmoil upon society and the injustice brought down upon the working class figure prominently in Guilloux's novels.;Following two lines of development, the thesis studies the novels both in their generic relationships with populist literature and from the point of …

A Genetic Analysis Of Folate Transport In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, T Michael Underhill Jan 1991

A Genetic Analysis Of Folate Transport In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, T Michael Underhill

Digitized Theses

Chinese Hamster Ovary cells that are about 50x more resistant to the cytotoxic action of methotrexate than wild-type cells were deficient in the ability to take up methotrexate. In the absence of any exogeneous folates these cells require 100-250x the level of folinic acid as do wild-type cells to support growth at a similar level. Two classes of mutants were distinguishable by their revertability for growth on folinic acid and ability to take-up folic acid. Revertants derived from one class were similar to wild-type cells in their ability to grow in medium containing low levels of folinic acid and in …

Cholinergic-Noradrenergic And Cholinergic-Serotonergic Interactions In Measures Of Working And Reference Memory Of The Rat, Peter Prior Jan 1991

Cholinergic-Noradrenergic And Cholinergic-Serotonergic Interactions In Measures Of Working And Reference Memory Of The Rat, Peter Prior

Digitized Theses

These experiments concerned potential interactions of the cholinergic with the noradrenergic or serotonergic systems, in rat working and reference memory (WM & RM). In experiment 1a, 63 rats were trained to collect reinforcement from a radial maze, with eight of 16 arms consistently reinforced. Working errors (WEs) were re-entries into baited arms visited within a session; reference errors (REs) were visits to never-baited arms. The rats then participated in a dose-response study of scopolamine (scop). Correct entries decreased; WEs and REs increased concomitantly with dose. Cholinergic systems may not subserve WM specifically. Forty-one of these rats participated a year later …

Authority And Interpretation In Chaucer's "Tale Of Melibee", Dominick M. Grace Jan 1991

Authority And Interpretation In Chaucer's "Tale Of Melibee", Dominick M. Grace

Digitized Theses

Although Chaucer's concern with problems of authority is widely recognized by scholars, the Tale of Melibee, which he assigned to his persona in the Canterbury Tales, is equally widely regarded as an unambiguous assertion of moral authority. The allegory is transparent, its moral clear, and the tale a slavishly literal translation of Renaud de Louens' Livre de Mellibee et Prudence, critics argue. Though its placement in the Canterbury context raises questions of interpretation--Chaucer prefaces the tale with overt stress on the matter of the tale's sentence, and the tale is followed by Harry's misreading of it--most critics accept the view …

Collusive Pricing With Incomplete Information, Chantale Lacasse Jan 1991

Collusive Pricing With Incomplete Information, Chantale Lacasse

Digitized Theses

Fudenberg and Maskin (1986) find that any feasible and individually rational payoff can be supported by subgame perfect equilibrium strategies in an infinitely repeated game with complete information, if the discount rate is low enough. An analogous result holds for the case of finitely repeated games (Benoi t and Krishna (1985)).;These results imply that, if a cartel forms, it will have no difficulty maintaining its collusive agreement. The first part of the thesis investigates when agents choose to collude given the benefits of collusion (cooperative payoffs dominate non-cooperative payoffs) and its cost (agents risk government prosecution). We choose the context …

Essays On Negotiation And Renegotiation, Quan Wen Jan 1991

Essays On Negotiation And Renegotiation, Quan Wen

Digitized Theses

This dissertation consists of two essays related to negotiation and renegotiation in game theory. They investigate the renegotiation-proof equilibria in finitely repeated games and subgame perfect equilibria in negotiation games, respectively.;The renegotiation-proof equilibria in finitely repeated games with many players are studied in the first essay. Renegotiation-proof equilibrium requires not only subgame perfectness but also subgame efficiency. The main result of Benoi t and Krishna (1988) who studied the renegotiation-proof equilibria in two-player finitely repeated games does not apply to the games with more than two players. One sufficient condition for renegotiation-proof equilibria to be Pareto optimal in finitely repeated …

Petrogenesis Of The Prairie Creek, Arkansas, Diamondiferous Olivine Lamproite, Edward C. Walker Jan 1991

Petrogenesis Of The Prairie Creek, Arkansas, Diamondiferous Olivine Lamproite, Edward C. Walker

Digitized Theses

The Prairie Creek, Arkansas olivine lamproite intrusion consists of three facies of rock: tuff, breccia and hypabyssal facies of rock; and two suites of cognate xenoliths. Suprasolidus experiments on the hypabyssal rock were undertaken between 10 and 40 kilobars, and 1000 and 1400{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C, with three different volatile conditions. A petrogenetic model for the intrusion is proposed based on the integration of phase relations and mineral chemistry.;Clinopyroxene, phlogopite, spinel and titan potassic richterite mineral analyses from the intrusion independently define a single continuous compositional trend. Comparison of the mineral analyses from the intrusion to those from the experiments suggests that the …

The Role Of Genetic And Phenotypic Variation In The Colonization Biology Of The Weedy Nightshade, Solanum Ptycanthum Dun, Luise Anne Hermanutz Jan 1991

The Role Of Genetic And Phenotypic Variation In The Colonization Biology Of The Weedy Nightshade, Solanum Ptycanthum Dun, Luise Anne Hermanutz

Digitized Theses

Solanum ptycanthum (eastern black nightshade) is a serious weed of tomato and soybean crops at the northern margin of its distribution in southwestern Ontario. Evidence for direct immigration, albeit at low, sporadic frequencies, of nightshade into these agrestal habitats occurs via tomato transplants imported from Georgia and North Carolina. Northern ruderal populations are also common in a variety of natural habitats. Outcrossing rates in northern and southern genotypes were compared in simulated populations grown in northern agricultural habitats. Greenhouse experiments were used to examine levels of genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity in life history traits among ruderal, agrestal and southern …

The Photophysics Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed On Silica Gel Surfaces: A Lifetime Distribution Analysis Approach, Yuan-Sheng Liu Jan 1991

The Photophysics Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Adsorbed On Silica Gel Surfaces: A Lifetime Distribution Analysis Approach, Yuan-Sheng Liu

Digitized Theses

The relaxation process of excited molecules, in homogeneous systems, is routinely studied through the measurements of fluorescence lifetimes and fluorescence quantum yields. From these data, the radiative decay rate, and hence the non-radiative decay rate, can be easily derived. Effort has been made, in the present work, to conduct such a fundamental study with molecules adsorbed on silica gel surfaces.;The photophysics of six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), comprising phenanthrene, chrysene, pyrene, perylene, benzoperylene and coronene, adsorbed on variously dehydroxylated silica gel surfaces, has been investigated in this work. It has been observed that the fluorescence lifetimes of these adsorbed PAHs …

Homo- And Hetero-Dinuclear Complexes Of Cobalt, David J. Elliot Jan 1991

Homo- And Hetero-Dinuclear Complexes Of Cobalt, David J. Elliot

Digitized Theses

The work presented in this thesis concerns the synthesis and characterization of a series of novel phosphine-carbonyl complexes of cobalt. Chapters 2 and 3 outline mononuclear and homodinuclear cobalt complexes, chapters 4 and 5 discuss heterobimetallic complexes (CoM(CO){dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm n{rcub}{dollar}({dollar}\mu{dollar}-dppm){dollar}\sb2{dollar}) (M = Rh,n = 3; M = Mn or Re, n = 5), and finally chapters 6 and 7 discuss complexes containing the {dollar}\mu{dollar}-PPh{dollar}\sb2{dollar} group and the complex ((CO){dollar}\sb2{dollar}({dollar}\eta\sp1{dollar}-dppm) Co({dollar}\mu{dollar}-dppm)BH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}), respectively.;Introduction of CO into Co(II)/phosphine/NaBH{dollar}\sb4{dollar} reaction systems, previously shown to produce a number of interesting complexes, has provided a novel approach to the synthesis of phosphine-carbonyl complexes of cobalt. A number …
