Tourism and its impacts are characterized by spatial variation. Recognizing this, governments have actively tried to influence the location of tourism development in an attempt to capture perceived benefits associated with tourism. One of the most direct approaches used has been the provision of financial assistance to investors in areas targeted for regional development. Unfortunately, the theoretical understanding of the spatial process associated with tourism development has not kept pace with the practice of intervention into this development process. Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti

This thesis examines the evolving policies and institutional arrangements in the Canadian agri-food industry; specifically an analysis of differential development between the dairy and beef livestock sectors. Moving beyond the pluralist and other alternative explanations for the development of marketing boards, an integrative theoretical framework which incorporates a broader conceptual and theoretical approach was adopted to investigate the role of producers, agribusiness and the state in the agricultural policy-making process for each agri-food sector. It is widely recognized that the practice of agriculture is a highly gendered activity, with traditional roles for women centring around the concept of the agricultural helpmate. The most non-traditional role played by women is that of a farm owner or operator, directing a farming venture. This group has become more noticeable as agricultural restructuring progresses and the number of male farmers declines, yet relatively little detailed information exists about them, or the farms they operate.
