Application Of Computational Methods To Prioritize Experiments Focused On Biomolecular Drug Targets, Babatunde Adebiyi Raji Jan 2018

Application Of Computational Methods To Prioritize Experiments Focused On Biomolecular Drug Targets, Babatunde Adebiyi Raji

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

SK1 is an intracellular enzyme whose lipid kinase activity regulates the levels of bioactive lipids that are involved in normal homeostasis and disease. SK1 activity is implicated in various diseases including cancer, and inhibition of SK1 activity is a potential treatment for its implicated pathogenesis. However, without a high-throughput SK1 activity assay, screening and identification of SK1 inhibitors is a rigorous process that requires significant time and resources to yield potent lead compounds. In order to develop a high-throughput SK1 assay method, an optically active non-lipid SK1 substrate was designed for the purpose of monitoring activity in real-time. Evaluation of …

Identity, Gender, And (Im)Politeness: A Case Of Twitter Interactions On Women Driving In Saudi Arabia, Nahla Abdulrahman Zamakhshari Jan 2018

Identity, Gender, And (Im)Politeness: A Case Of Twitter Interactions On Women Driving In Saudi Arabia, Nahla Abdulrahman Zamakhshari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The traditional view in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is the separation of men and women. Women in the KSA were not allowed to drive cars. On the 26th of September 2017, the King of Saudi Arabia lifted the ban on women driving. This was a major change and a symbolic step for women as part of their quest to achieve visibility and social equality. This became a controversial topic that resulted in many discussions on social media platforms, one of them being Twitter. While existing research has examined (1) CMC, (2) Gendered Identities and (3) Saudi Culture, there …

Source Attribution, Antibiotic Resistance And Virulence Properties Of Salmonella Serotypes Isolated From Clinically Diagnosed Human Salmonellosis Cases From Tennessee, Nabanita Mukherjee Jan 2018

Source Attribution, Antibiotic Resistance And Virulence Properties Of Salmonella Serotypes Isolated From Clinically Diagnosed Human Salmonellosis Cases From Tennessee, Nabanita Mukherjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection is one of the major causes of diarrheal disease throughout the world. Recently, an increase in trend of human S. Newport, S. Javiana, and S. Mississippi infection has been observed in Tennessee. The exact reason for the increase of the NTS infection by these three serotypes is not known. The sources of human S. Javiana infections are not well characterized. This study performed a systematic literature review to identify potential sources of human S. Javiana infection based on available scientific evidence. This study identified the food (such as tomatoes, watermelons, paprika-spice, and cheese), drinking well water, …

The Effects Of Diet And Food Deprivation On The Sexual And Exploratory Behaviors Of Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Lyndsey Marie Pierson Jan 2018

The Effects Of Diet And Food Deprivation On The Sexual And Exploratory Behaviors Of Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Lyndsey Marie Pierson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) is a small herbivorous rodent inhabiting grassy fields throughout the Northern United States and Canada. Meadow voles are promiscuous, with males and females taking multiple mates during a single breeding season. Female meadow voles are territorial while males occupy large home ranges that encompass the territories of multiple females. My research focused on how changes in diet or food availability influenced the sexual and exploratory behaviors of meadow voles. In Chapters 1 and 2, I assessed the influence of phytoestrogens on the sexual behavior of meadow voles. Phytoestrogens are nonsteroidal compounds produced by plants that …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Teacher Perception Of Greens Four-Dimensional Model Of Principal Leadership And The Academic Achievement Of Secondary Students, Stephanie Smith Jan 2018

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Teacher Perception Of Greens Four-Dimensional Model Of Principal Leadership And The Academic Achievement Of Secondary Students, Stephanie Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between student achievement assessed longitudinally in terms of ACT composite scores and state-mandated tests of proficiency and the perceived extent to which high schools have implemented Greens four-dimensional model of educational leadership.Four scales with five items each were used to measure each dimension of Greens model. The items for each dimension originated as responses to twenty items on the 2013 administration of the Teaching, Empowering, Leading, and Learning survey in Tennessee (TELL Tennessee). School-level means at 248 high schools were found for each scale that was proposed to measure each …

The Transgenerational Effect Of Maternal Grandmothers Body Mass Index And Socioeconomic Status On Offspring Birth Weight: The Mediation Effect Of Maternal Birth Weight, Early Adulthood Bmi, And Dna Methylation, Yan Shen Jan 2018

The Transgenerational Effect Of Maternal Grandmothers Body Mass Index And Socioeconomic Status On Offspring Birth Weight: The Mediation Effect Of Maternal Birth Weight, Early Adulthood Bmi, And Dna Methylation, Yan Shen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prior research demonstrated intergenerational effects of maternal risk factors on offspring birth weight. However, only a limited number of studies investigated whether grand-maternal risk factors, i.e. body mass index (BMI) and socioeconomic status (SES), affected grandchilds birth weight (GBW). Besides, it is unknown whether such associations are direct or mediated by maternal risk factors. Grand-maternal smoking during pregnancy was additionally included due to many studies addressing the adverse effect of maternal smoking on birth weight. I used three-generation data from Isle of Wight birth cohort in UK and performed structural equation models (SEM) to assess the associations between grand-maternal risk …

Statistical Analysis Of Seismicity Catalog Of Alaska: The Mysteries Of The Timeseries, Shima Azizzadehroodpish Jan 2018

Statistical Analysis Of Seismicity Catalog Of Alaska: The Mysteries Of The Timeseries, Shima Azizzadehroodpish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract:This dissertation presents the results of applying three independent statistical techniques on the seismic catalog of Alaska and Aleutian subduction zone. I perform Visibility Graph Analysis and Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis respectively on the seismic catalogs of several defined seismogenic zones in surface and depth. Forecasting earthquake hazard is based on the assumption that the Gutenberg-Richter relation represents the size distribution of future earthquakes and we show that the series produced by these methods have properties with close correlation with the b-value of the Gutenberg-Richter law. Visibility graph analysis basically maps a time series into the networks of nodes and …
