Development And Functional Evaluation Of Chitosan Paste As A Local Antibiotic Delivery Biomaterial, Christopher Michael Alexander May 2018

Development And Functional Evaluation Of Chitosan Paste As A Local Antibiotic Delivery Biomaterial, Christopher Michael Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Complex musculoskeletal wounds, resultant of high-energy trauma, are a leading cause of morbidity worldwide due, in part, to a propensity for bacterial contamination. This work details the fabrication of a thermo-responsive, injectable chitosan composite paste by including the additive β-glycerophosphate, which creates a polyelectrolyte complex with the chitosan molecular backbone. Functional and clinical efficacy as an infection prevention tool were determined within the scope of complex musculoskeletal wounds. Findings from in vitro studies support the capability of chitosan paste to be loaded with dual antibiotics for release of inhibitory levels of both amikacin and vancomycin for at least 3 days. …

Mechanical Characterization Of Chitosan Coating Deposited Using Electrospray Method, Ewe Jiun Chng Apr 2018

Mechanical Characterization Of Chitosan Coating Deposited Using Electrospray Method, Ewe Jiun Chng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Incorporation of coating to enhance the bioactivity, anti-microbial and drug delivery capability of implant has been the interest of researchers. Chitosan is a biopolymer that exhibits these properties. In this study, electrospray method was used to coat 2D titanium substrate and titanium screw with chitosan. The focus was to compare the bond strength between the coatings produced using electrospray and solution casting method. The effect of silane-based treatment to chemically bond chitosan to the surface of titanium for better bonding was evaluated. The bond strength of the 2D coatings was evaluated using tensile and shear tests. The coating retention on …
