Effective Disorder Strength And Fractal Dimension Of Biologically Relevant Systems, Ethan Ross Avery
Effective Disorder Strength And Fractal Dimension Of Biologically Relevant Systems, Ethan Ross Avery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, therefore, in order to properly relate the competition between fractal dimension of a system to its optical scattering properties, and to find the fractal dimension for which maximum scattering occurs, we have performed a systematic characterization of the disorder properties of fractal biological samples with a wide range of fractal dimensions. As cells/tissues are dielectric media, we have indirectly characterize the effective disorder of the fractal media based on their eigenvalues/eigenfunction in a closed-boundary condition using optical waves. We observed a non-monotonous behavior due to the competition between decreases in fractality verses increasing scattering centers.
Characteristics Of Smoking Oncology Patients In A Community Cancer Center: A Study Of Individual Differences, Amy Susan Farrell
Characteristics Of Smoking Oncology Patients In A Community Cancer Center: A Study Of Individual Differences, Amy Susan Farrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cigarette smoking can seriously impede cancer treatment and leads to poorer treatment response. Fortunately, even when patients have cancer, smoking cessation has significant benefits. However, there have not been many successful well-controlled studies assessing smoking cessation interventions in oncology settings. The present study aimed to expand upon the current literature by exploring sample characteristics and individual differences in this understudied population. Data were collected from 649 adult participants at a mid-South community-based cancer center. Three measures were developed and subjected to factor analysis to assess level of health literacy, perceived stigma, and oncology-related triggers in this sample. These variables were …

Nanotechnology-Based Cancer Phototherapy And Circulating Tumor Cell Analysis, Ryan Timothy O'Connor

Gold and hybrid gold nanotechnology are uniquely poised to improve the fields of cancer diagnosis and therapy. Modifying gold nanoparticles with biological proteins has been widely used for decades, however, the common carbodiimide technique requires steps that reduce sensitivity and effectiveness in some spectroscopic techniques. We have developed an antibody conjugation protocol which conducts linking first, and then covalently adheres the antibody-linker complex to the nanoparticle surface. The linking polymer N-hydroxysuccinimide-polyethylene glycol-thiol (NHS-PEG-SH) was incubated with a protein overnight and purified by centrifuge filtration before modifying the surface of gold nanoparticles by slow mixing. The method was transferred to antibody …
