Emerging Trends: Scenic Design Beyond The Stage, Kellie N. Murphy

LSU Master's Theses

The role of a scenic designer is so exciting but opportunities to design can fluctuate a bit. While the work is rewarding, the career itself can be much like a gig at times. Then when you factor in a major event such as a global pandemic, where does this leave a scenic designer in terms of employment and livelihood? Are there other possibilities for work with a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design? How do we continue to tell stories while providing for ourselves? Have artists considered how these skills are transferrable to other allied fields?

As a scenic …

Strengthening Adolescents with Anxiety Through Drama Therapy

Jeremy Moeller

In recent years the issues associated with social anxiety have become increasingly common in adolescents. With these issues becoming more common it is important that they continue to be nurtured and helped. With so many forms of therapy though it may be hard for someone to find a practice that suits them. That is where drama therapy comes in. Drama therapy is a fairly new practice that helps these adolescents to become more expressive and engaging in their everyday lives, decrease their social anxieties, and build a new sense of confidence …

Little Shop Of Horrors Dramaturgy, Rachel Smart 2022 Northwestern College - Orange City

Little Shop Of Horrors Dramaturgy, Rachel Smart

Celebration of Research

The role of a dramaturg is one of the most difficult to define in theatre. While dramaturgy is almost always a research position, the responsibilities that a dramaturg will take on will vary from production to production depending on the needs and vision of the director and crew. For this reason the artistry of a dramaturg is incredibly fluid, adjusting constantly. My role as dramaturg for Little Shop of Horrors this fall illustrated this, for I took on a variety of responsibilities some traditional to dramaturgy and others new to me: researcher, dialect coach, and front of house designer.

Remember, Sierra Tumbleson, Drew Schmidt 2022 Northwestern College - Orange City

Remember, Sierra Tumbleson, Drew Schmidt

Celebration of Research

This is a performance about remembering—remembering an array of verbatim scripture pieces that are knit together in a way that draws attention to an overarching theme. Lines were separated in a way that conveyed what each Biblical character was remembering, and in a way to answer the question that sparked this project, “How do we portray the voice of God in religious drama?” In Remember, each actor took on the voice of God at certain points, at other times they were spectators in biblical times, and sometimes they were themselves in modern times remembering these words. My honors project for …

Charlotte's Web: World-Building In Scenic Design, Karisa Meier 2022 Northwestern College - Orange City

Charlotte's Web: World-Building In Scenic Design, Karisa Meier

Celebration of Research

Scene design is more than providing actors the pieces with which they interact. It is part of creating the story’s whole world. In the Northwestern College Theatre Department’s 2021 children’s show, Charlotte’s Web, based on E.B. White’s classic novel and adapted by Joseph Robinette, all aspects of the show sought to draw in the eyes and imaginations of the thousands of children that graced our seats. From the arena seating arrangement to giant sparkling spiderwebs in each vomitorium, I wanted to create an immersive experience that enveloped the audience in the whimsy of talking animals and the realism of a …

Eurydice Costume Design Research, Chloe Tschetter 2022 Northwestern College - Orange City

Eurydice Costume Design Research, Chloe Tschetter

Celebration of Research

As a costume designer for Northwestern’s Spring 2021 production of Eurydice, I did research into the different time eras and historical clothing of the eras throughout the play. The play is a Greek myth, set in the 40s, so my research included looks into both the Greek styles and that of the 40s and 50s, as well as a look at how the myth has been depicted in art throughout history. After gaining a deeper understanding of the repeating designs and silhouettes I saw throughout my research, I then turned to designing. I used the classic silhouettes of the times …

The 5th Humor, Stella Maria Perry

Theatre & Dance ETDs

I will be using a self-interview as a method of investigating both the origins of myself, the artist, and the work produced I have produced in and out of the MFA Dramatic Writing program with a special focus on my dissertation play, The Blood Vessel.

The intention is to investigate how my plays have come into existence and how they inform each other. This is done through a series of questions I ask myself under the pseudonym Penelope Hawkins. Penelope guides me through the investigation as a character, thus becoming part of the work of the self-interview and still …

Risk, Resilience, And The Essential Experience Of Being Seen: Helping Actors Move From Self-Care To Deep Freedom With The Alexander Technique, Jennifer Schulz 2022 California State University - San Bernardino

Risk, Resilience, And The Essential Experience Of Being Seen: Helping Actors Move From Self-Care To Deep Freedom With The Alexander Technique, Jennifer Schulz

Theatre Faculty Publications

In actor training, Alexander Technique (AT) encourages release of tension, ease, efficiency of movement, and greater expressivity. It evokes deep transition into character, and helps the actor avoid injury. While AT often transpires in quiet spaces between an AT teacher and student, it can also be utilized as a practical tool by the director in group experiences, both in the classroom and in rehearsals, in order to restore expansiveness and brighten the creative inner life of the actor for the audience. Its principles are flexible and comprehensive, fostering freedom and play. While a certified AT teacher is required for full …

Dayton Is Burning: A Survey Of Drag History And Performance In Southwest And Central Ohio, Katie Schreyer

Honors Theses

The history of gender performance is long and complex, spanning across different times and places that are each fascinating in their right and worth being studied. This thesis focuses specifically on the drag performances that take place in and around Dayton, Ohio. The research presented here is based on explorations of two distinct time periods 100 years apart from each other, the turn of the 20th century and the modern day. These two distinct times and cultures are each characterized by the performances that occurred, how they were received by audiences, the identities of the performers and the degree of …
