Parental Perceptions Of A Midwest Public Library: An Exploratory Study Of Chinese-Speaking Residents, Lingxin Ruth Yan 2010 University of Northern Iowa

Parental Perceptions Of A Midwest Public Library: An Exploratory Study Of Chinese-Speaking Residents, Lingxin Ruth Yan

Graduate Research Papers

The United States has experienced the rapid growth of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in public schools since 1990. Issues concerning CLD students such as their limited English proficiency, school failures, parental involvement in their education, appropriate models of bilingual education and study resources provided by libraries have caused increasing concerns from policy makers, school administrators and educators at all school levels. Facing the diversity population reality, both school libraries and public libraries are called to become more culturally responsive in providing effective outreach library services to ensure academic success of all CLD students and meet the needs of …

Copyright And Education: Lessons On African Copyright And Access To Knowledge, Tobias Schonwetter, Jeremy De Beer, Dick Kawooya, Achal Prabhala

Faculty Publications

The African Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K) project is a pan-African research network of academics and researchers from law, economics and the information sciences, spanning Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda. Research conducted by the project was designed to investigate the extent to which copyright is fulfilling its objective of facilitating access to knowledge, and learning materials in particular, in the study countries. The hypotheses tested during the course of research were that: (a) the copyright environments in study countries are not maximising access to learning materials, and (b) the copyright environments in study countries …

American First Ladies As Goodwill Ambassadors, Wendy W. Tan 2010 CUNY Hunter College

American First Ladies As Goodwill Ambassadors, Wendy W. Tan

Publications and Research

Quite a few First Ladies took very active moves regarding international interests, and they often weighed in their opinions on their husbands’ decisions on related issues. My research was mainly conducted in five Presidential Libraries associated with five well-traveled First Ladies. After studying hundreds of journeys they made, my descriptions were focused on five, one for each lady, of them only. All of these trips shared a common trait, which was under the calling of humanitarian cause.

The purpose of this study was to examine student recall of facts, along with enjoyment of reading and interest in the topic when using graphic novels as compared to illustrated nonfiction prose in social studies content area reading. Twenty-two fifth grade students (13 f, 9 m) in a public school in a Midwestern state participated in the study. Authority control is very expensive; however, a controlled vocabulary is important for the users of a library catalog. Ways must be found to do authority control faster, cheaper, and better if we are to maintain a high-quality library catalog.

Evaluating Models Of Latent Document Semantics In The Presence Of Ocr Errors, Daniel D. Walker, William B. Lund, Eric K. Ringger 2010 Brigham Young University - Provo

Evaluating Models Of Latent Document Semantics In The Presence Of Ocr Errors, Daniel D. Walker, William B. Lund, Eric K. Ringger

Faculty Publications

Models of latent document semantics such as the mixture of multinomials model and Latent Dirichlet Allocation have received substantial attention for their ability to discover topical semantics in large collections of text. In an effort to apply such models to noisy optical character recognition (OCR) text output, we endeavor to understand the effect that character-level noise can have on unsupervised topic modeling. We show the effects both with document-level topic analysis (document clustering) and with word-level topic analysis (LDA) on both synthetic and real-world OCR data. As expected, experimental results show that performance declines as word error rates increase. Common …

Solving The Rubrics Cube: Using Assessment To Sharpen Library Instruction, Elisa Acosta, Susan Gardner

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Loyola Marymount University's (LMU) Reference Department designed a rubric to measure student learning outcomes for freshman English. Students sequentially completed an "English 110 Library Research Worksheet” during library instruction. The rubric which is set up to analyze learning outcomes from parts of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education is applied to collected student worksheets. The Department undertook a multi-step process to try to calibrate the rubric and achieve consensus estimates of inter-rater reliability. During fall 2009, reference & instruction librarians collected 755 worksheets and graded a random sample of 100 students. This poster session will present the …

Rock The Casbah (Calarts Student Behaviors And Habits), Jeffrey Gatten, Mike Bryant

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Adapting the qualitative methodologies from Studying Students: The Undergraduate Research Project at the University of Rochester (Foster & Gibbons, 2007), the CalArts Student Behaviors and Habits (CASBAH) project undertook to learn holistically about the behaviors of art school students. Our research question was, “How do students in an artistic and nontraditional setting view and act on the process of discovery?” The CASBAH study utilized faculty interviews, student interviews, poster surveys, photo surveys, online surveys, and focus groups. We learned our students at CalArts expect to create their own individualized information-seeking paradigm, one that will not impose an external artistic perspective …

Using A Rubric To Assess Freshman English Library Instruction, Susan Gardner Archambault, Elisa Acosta

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) Reference Department redesigned their freshman English library instruction so that all freshmen get a consistent and measurable experience using the library. In order to move to a more outcomes-based approach that measures what students can do with the information literacy skills we teach them, the Department designed an interactive five-module introduction to the research process that can be evaluated. All teaching materials were inserted onto a “LibGuide” content management system. Students sequentially complete an “English 110 Library Research Worksheet” as they work through the five-module research process and receive library instruction.

The Department also designed a …

The Relationship Between Information Technology And Construction Productivity, Dong Zhai

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Over the past decades, information technology has been impacting industries, economics, the way of life and even the culture throughout the world. Productivity has been attracting much attention as an important indicator of economics, and numerous researchers have investigated the relationship between information technology and productivity. Construction is one of the largest industries in the United States, but little research has been conducted to investigate the relationship between information technology and construction productivity.

The major objective of this dissertation is to determine the degree (if any) to which information technology usage, specifically the use of information technology to automate and …

Selection And Cataloging For An Automated Retrieval Collection: Viewpoint Of A Cataloger, Debra G. Skinner

University Libraries: Faculty Publications

In the summer of 2004, Georgia Southern University began a library construction project that was to last 4 years. An important aspect was the installation of an Automated Retrieval System (ARC) to house a substantial portion of the library collections so that more space could be available for students, faculty, and the services to meet their needs. This paper traces the development of the use of the ARC to house collections, with emphasis on how materials were selected for the two phases of the project and how catalogers have adapted to the idea of collections that can only be browsed …
