The article discusses the use of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles in the design of the modern public library. It is stated that an LEED-certified library will have lower costs in energy, systems replacement and maintenance through the use of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and efficient heating and air conditioning, but that due to special materials, the up-front expense is higher. The inspection of the facility throughout its construction is also noted.

Construction To Begin On Uga Special Collections Library Building

The article reports on the start of the construction for the University of Georgia Special Collections Library in Athens in January 2010. It will reportedly house the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library on Georgia history and culture, the Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collection, which has more than 100,000 audio and video recordings and the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies. The building's use of state-of-the-art storage and security is also discussed.

Dekalb County Makes Construction Progress

The article features the two projects completed in the library bond program of DeKalb County Public Library in Georgia. The Northlake-Barbara Loar branch and the Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams branch reportedly expanded to 15,000 and 18,000 square feet respectively. It is stated that the Hairston Crossing and Salem-Panola branches have began renovation and that new Tucker-Reid H. Cofer and Embry Hill libraries will emerge in 2010.

Demystifying The Irb: Human Subjects Research In Academic Libraries, Maura A. Smale

Many academic librarians are interested in pursuing research studies that involve students, faculty, and other library patrons; these projects must be approved by an institutional review board (IRB). This article reviews federal requirements and regulations for human subjects research and explains the IRB application process. The author discusses common types of research projects undertaken by academic librarians that require IRB approval and offers suggestions for successful navigation through the IRB process. Academic librarians should embrace research involving human subjects because the results contribute to the corpus of scholarly knowledge in library and information science as well as in higher education.

Online learning is transforming the way colleges and universities offer credit bearing courses. Now students are able to finish some or all of a degree online, with courses and programs from the hard sciences to the humanities. Nevertheless, a college education is comprised of a variety of educational and social activities that extend beyond a discrete class. Classroom learning is enriched and supported by services across campus, from the writing center to tutoring services, to the library.

The purpose of this paper is to describe “what happened” with round two of the implementation of Learning 2.0 with a large and diverse group of library staff at Edith Cowan University (ECU) Library during 2007/2008. A previous paper reported on a study of the suitability of the 23 Things Learning 2.0 program for a small group of early adopters in the ECU Library. This follow-up paper reports challenges that library management faced when the remaining staff were given the 23 Things Learning 2.0 program. In 2004, Lesniaski revised White’s Brief Test methodology for smaller academic libraries that lack sufficient subject specialist librarians to perform the brief tests as originally proposed byWhite. As a part of regular collection development, Cowles Library implemented Lesniaski’s Brief Tests on the print monograph collection. While primarily a review of Lesniaski’s methodology, this article also discusses how the Brief Tests were used for improved collection evaluation and maintenance.

With so many reference materials available for the elementary public school library, making subscription reference database purchasing decisions can be an overwhelming task. The purpose of this research study was to examine how the 15 participating Iowa teacher librarians made subscription reference database purchasing decisions and the use they observe of various reference materials by students and staff influencing these decisions. Clicking With Your Audience: Evaluating The Use Of Personal Response Systems In Library Instruction, Emily Chan, Lorrie Knight

University of the Pacific librarians used personal response systems (PRS) or clickers in first- year mandatory library instructional sessions to assess their effects on student engagement and retention of learning outcomes. Students who utilized clickers during their library sessions reported greater enjoyment and encouragement to participate (n=291). Students in the sessions not utilizing the clickers achieved better learning outcomes than their counterparts who utilized clickers (n=326). The implications of these results are discussed, specifically within the context of pedagogy and tailoring instruction to the Millennial generation.

Mining The Knowledge Base: Wiki Technology And Constructivist Learning And In A Reference Services Training Program, Emily Chan, Marina Torres

In Fall 2009, University of the Pacific's Health Sciences Branch (HSB) Library initiated a reference training program to develop competencies and skills in order to promote a uniform level of reference expertise among its paraprofessional staff. Like many other branch libraries, HSB serves specialized user populations with minimal staffing. At the time of the training, the Sciences Librarian was the only provider of reference services and her presence at HSB varied, based upon her responsibilities to the Main Library, its Reference Desk and other departmental, school, and university-wide committees. 

Training Paraprofessionals Via A Wiki Format To Deliver Reference Services, Emily Chan, Marina Torres

To maximize staff presence and reference capabilities at HSB, reference training was implemented for the branch's two paraprofessional employees. A wiki platform was selected to collocate different resources and formats in a simple location. The collaborative functions of the wiki complemented the branch's team-oriented environment. Each staff member selected materials of interest and augmented the wiki conversation with their previous experiences.

This paper reports on the findings of a study which explored the multiple information needs that faced the Cumbrian farming community in the north-west of England during the 2001 UK foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Findings highlighted the importance of: changes in information needs at different stages of the crisis, context in which information seeking took place, overlap of information and emotional needs, formal and informal channels of information seeking during the crisis, farmers as information providers as well as information seekers, sense-making approach to information seeking during the crisis, trusted information sources need for a mix of ICTs during the crisis, …

An engineering background may not be required for successful outreach projects, however, when coupled with a review of the relevant literature of sci-tech librarianship; it can certainly facilitate “buy in” from the faculty in a way that promotes the American Board of Engineering and Technology mandates to foster lifelong information literacy skills in their students.
