Integrating Information Literacy Instruction In An Upper-Division Writing-Intensive Class, Ellen K. Wilson, Jeffrey M. Blankenship 2010 University of South Alabama

Integrating Information Literacy Instruction In An Upper-Division Writing-Intensive Class, Ellen K. Wilson, Jeffrey M. Blankenship

The Southeastern Librarian

Writing-intensive courses are a required component of undergraduate education at the University of South Alabama, but often the courses are designed to test students’ writing skills, rather than to teach the research and writing process. In the fall of 2008, an instruction librarian and an assistant professor in political science collaborated to redesign one writing intensive course, Public Administration (PSC 401), in an attempt to address this dilemma. This project was born out of frustration – frustration on the part of the professor about the generally poor quality of writing and research skills by students in the course the previous …

In addition to the creation of digitized images, making these materials available online as the Civil Rights in Mississippi Digital Archive included the formulation of descriptive records using Dublin Core metadata and the development …

Critical Theory, Libraries And Culture, Jenny Bossaller, Denice Adkins, Kim M. Thompson 2010 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Critical Theory, Libraries And Culture, Jenny Bossaller, Denice Adkins, Kim M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

There are disparate notions among people within the broad field of information and library science regarding exactly what comprises information science. One broad definition is provided by Tefko Saracevic: “Information science is a field of professional practice and scientific inquiry addressing the problem of effective communication of knowledge records – ʻliteratureʼ – among humans in the context of social, organizational, and individual need for and use of information” (1055- 1056). At its most basic, it seems that information science could be a neutral science if, indeed, it studies everything that is communicated, in any form. However, as noted in the …

African University Libraries And Internet Connectivity: Challenges And The Way Forward, R.I. Echezona, C.F. Ugwuanyi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

African universities are indispensable in economic, social, and human development through research and academic activities. A university library is the hub of academic activities in African universities. Internet bandwidth is the life blood of a modern university. Low bandwidth and connectivity have not allowed the African university libraries to benefit from information superhighways This paper examines initiatives and extent of connectivity among African university libraries. It discusses obstacles to connectivity and offers solutions.

Global Adoption Of Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Dillip K. Swain

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) are being adopted by more and more universities. The best way to make use of theses and dissertations is through electronic publication and online access. This paper looks at the status of use and adoption of ETDs in various different parts of the world, describes the history and development of ETDs, key issues governing ETD projects, potential merits of ETDs for effective teaching and research, and ETD initiatives in India.

The Great Library Of Alexandria?, Heather Philips

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Though it was Alexandria's Pharos lighthouse that was counted among the Seven Wonders of the World, Ancient Alexandria was a city in which wonders abounded. The city featured wide boulevards laid out in a grid, and buildings constructed of granite and marble. Some say that Alexander himself had a hand in planning this great city. One of the most notable wonders of the city was the Great Library of Alexandria (hereinafter Great Library or Library), an institution which has assumed legendary proportions in the mythos of western civilization. However, institutions which assume mythological proportions are often obscured by the very …

“Not I” Said The Pig: Who Defends Intellectual Freedom For Librarians?, Jean-Mark Sens 2010 Nicholls State University

“Not I” Said The Pig: Who Defends Intellectual Freedom For Librarians?, Jean-Mark Sens

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Although librarians have traditionally defended intellectual freedom, the American Library Association (ALA) tends to treat it as a local management issue. As librarianship has become increasingly technical defense of intellectual freedom has diminished. Censorship generates self-censorship and demonstrates a subservient relation to authority detrimental to collection development. Using instances from his professional life, the author argues that censorship infantilizes patrons, discourages critical thinking, and is counterproductive to institutions of higher learning.

Redefining Sources As Social Acts: Genre Theory In Information Literacy Instruction, Joel M. Burkholder 2010 York College of Pennsylvania

Redefining Sources As Social Acts: Genre Theory In Information Literacy Instruction, Joel M. Burkholder

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Long before the emergence of the World Wide Web, librarians had a long tradition of collecting and classifying physical materials. Influenced by these activities, information literacy instruction has defined and taught sources as objects of similar content and/or format. Because of their ability to organize information for easy retrieval, such definitions are helpful from a practical standpoint. Unfortunately, they do little to account for a source's role as a communicative act shared within and between communities. To expand our definition we must look to Genre Theory. Genre Theory examines how groups develop language—genres--to respond to recurrent, rhetorical situations. Seen as …
