Another Look At Bill C-32 And The Access Copyright Tariff: Still Double Trouble For Higher Education, Samuel E. Trosow

FIMS Presentations

Earlier this year, the government tabled Bill C-32, proposed amendments to the Copyright Act. Following a consultation process, the Bill is widely recognized as more reasonable than its predecessor, Bill C-61. On the positive side, the bill would expand fair dealing to explicitly include "education". On the other hand, the digital locks provisions of the Bill are fundamentally flawed and override many existing and proposed users rights. Also this year, Access Copyright filed a proposed tariff for the post-secondary education sector with the Copyright Board. The proposal, which includes a drastic increase in costs as well as numerous new reporting …

Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown 2010 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Presentations

Three different ways of documenting library value were presented to fourth year landscape architecture students in the UNLV School of Architecture: a contingent valuation survey, a library calculator, and a survey to rate importance and impact of library services and features. Students used the three approaches, then discussed their experiences with the author. Their input suggested improvements in the instruments and provided feedback on possible positive and negative consequences of inviting this kind of valuing. Working with a focused collection and population provided a relatively safe environment to explore concerns about negative consequences.

The result is the lack of popularity of the profession. Solutions for improving the adequacy of research techniques in librarianship are offered.

On Boredom, Information Systems, And The Practice Of Good Reading, Alberto Salarelli

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Boredom is one of most characteristic features of modern humans. In fact, the large amount of time available, due to the development of information systems, has made it possible to delegate various types of tasks to automatic machines. Traditionally, by boredom we mean a sort of defence mechanism used by humans against an excessive lack of stimuli which can lead to a progressive reduction in cerebral activity. Today, after the build up of systems which allow one to obtain great quantities of information from all parts of the world immediately, boredom seems to manifest itself as a symptom of “information …

Curriculum Mapping, Michelle Price 2010 St. John Fisher University

Curriculum Mapping, Michelle Price

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Curriculum mapping is a process that maps standards or skills to different points of the curriculum in order to establish a progressive sequence. While this is common practice in K-12 settings, it is much less common in a college or university. Librarians can utilize curriculum mapping to organize and create library instruction, without unnecessary overlap. On a broader scale, curriculum mapping helps to integrate librarian-led sessions and faculty-led sessions to successfully promote information literacy. In addition to defining curriculum mapping, in this session we will look at three different models of curriculum mapping, one in particular that employs the ACRL …
