An Exploratory Study Of Research Contexts For Information Literacy Instruction, Allison Hosier
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
In a previous study, the author argued that information literacy instruction which takes into account the contextual nature of research is more meaningful to students and has more potential for long term impact than instruction that focuses narrowly on academic research skills. As part of that argument, the author identified six types of research that represented the contextual nature of research—academic, creative, personal, professional, scholarly, and scientific. This list of research types has since proven useful in the classroom. However, it is still an open question whether this framework is a useful way of thinking about research. The author set …

Library research guides are crucial in enhancing students’ research and information literacy skills. This presentation discusses a study conducted between November 2023 and February 2024, focusing on AI-related library research guides at R1 institutions. Guided by AI Literacy principles and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, the study aimed to explore the practical and ethical dimensions of AI Literacy as reflected in these guides through content review and data extraction.
We examine the presence or absence of instructions on creating prompts to interact with language models such as ChatGPT and explore how these guides address human biases (e.g., racial bias) …

Drawing on materials from university archives, the event served to highlight Latin@/x historical points of interest across campus. The chapter examines the significance of identity-specific programming for distinct BIPOC groups, details aspects of program planning and implementation, and offers practical suggestions and considerations for librarians seeking to offer similar culturally affirming programming. While the following case study discusses a walking tour event primarily designed to support the needs of Latin@/x students, strategies shared can be applied to walking …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). In an increasingly technological-focused environment, it is paramount that library instructors infuse digital literacy skills into their teaching. Librarians as information professionals are in a prime position to impart digital literacy skills into patrons. This not only creates a more exciting lesson plan but also has the potential to teach students necessary digital literacy skills that are transferable beyond their schoolwork. In this chapter, the author examines the position of digital literacy in instruction and as a way to build employable skills. Examples of digital literacy activities’ that can be incorporated into information literacy instruction sessions no matter the length …

In 2018, The Educopia Institute and the Library Publishing Coalition (LPC), in partnership with the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), NASIG, and BlueSky to BluePrint, released the first iteration of the “Library Publishing Curriculum,” a suite of synchronous and asynchronous professional development offerings for librarians. The four initial modules—Content, Impact, Policy, and Sustainability—were funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences and address major competencies in library publishing. As part of the sustainability plan for these grant deliverables, the LPC created an editorial board that would steer future iterations of the curriculum. They took as their first task a step …

This chapter discusses the findings of a study that used Project Outcome (PO) to assess the effectiveness of library programming for first-year writing courses in different colleges at a mid-sized public university. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, PO data was used to compare student feedback on library support across multiple college writing programs to measure the success of library programming for all incoming first-year students. Second, the PO data was used to set a benchmark for future assessment with the expansion of the library programming for a first-year gateway course. We are not concerned with benchmarking across …

Critical Race Digital Literacy Rubric For Assessing Mis/Disinformation Literacy Instruction Lesson Plans, Melissa Chomintra
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
While librarians have been at the forefront of the fight against fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, offering invaluable guidance and tools through information literacy instruction, there is a noteworthy gap in the adoption of pedagogical approaches rooted in critical theory within mis/disinformation literacy lesson plans. This suggests there may not be well-defined or standardized frameworks for incorporating these theories into library instruction. The enclosed article explores Critical Race Digital Literacy (CRDL) as a pedagogical approach to mis/disinformation literacy education by proposing a rubric for assessing mis/disinformation lesson plans. The rubric is grounded in the principles of critical race theory, emphasizing …

The Impact Of Social Media On Charitable Giving For Nonprofit Organization, Namchul Shin
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Research has extensively studied nonprofit organizations’ use of social media for communications and interactions with supporters. However, there has been limited research examining the impact of social media on charitable giving. This research attempts to address the gap by empirically examining the relationship between the use of social media and charitable giving for nonprofit organizations. We employ a data set of the Nonprofit Times’ top 100 nonprofits ranked by total revenue for the empirical analysis. As measures for social media traction, i.e., how extensively nonprofits draw supporters on their social media sites, we use Facebook Likes, Twitter Followers, and Instagram …
