In this study, trainee solicitors have been selected for the purpose of investigation. Trainee solicitors are working under a training contract, the final stage of the process of qualification as a solicitor. The trainees are therefore ideal participants for research of this nature as they are by the very nature of their training contracts, learners, and through an exploration of the work that they are given to undertake this research can explore how the trainees develop their knowledge and how their information behaviour contributes to that learning. To this and a constructivist approach to inquiry was adopted untilising a narrative …

Research Models, Primo [Psu Library Catalog], And The First Year Experience, Kimberly Willson-St. Clair 2017 Portland State University

Research Models, Primo [Psu Library Catalog], And The First Year Experience, Kimberly Willson-St. Clair

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Research can be daunting for freshman who are challenged to gather scholarly information beyond Google for their research projects. Applying and blending two research models, ASE (Analyze, Search, Evaluate) with BEAM (Background, Exhibit, Argument, and Method), students can think critically about their topics and strategically search PRIMO for relevant results. This approach addresses several ACRL Framework threshold concepts, especially research as strategic exploration and scholarship as conversation. In this presentation, I will show how effective Primo can be for first year experience students especially in regards to discovering keywords, understanding and organizing citations, finding relevant scholarly resources, and discovering other …

We Need To Talk: Educating Internal Stakeholders On Repository Needs, James Williamson, Felicia Williamson

Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories

In creating, managing, and adapting digital collections, managers often face hurdles of technical misunderstanding and sometimes, intimidation. By educating internal stakeholders and creating allies, information managers can facilitate institutional change and are much more able to request and receive funding to pursue innovative programs requiring technical infrastructure.

Felicia Williamson, Archivist at the Dallas Holocaust Museum, will discuss the ongoing efforts to build a more robust technical infrastructure at a small non-profit Museum. Former efforts did not employ metadata standards. Moreover, online access to collections seemed a far off goal. Two main needs emerged: to create and maintain robust metadata and …

You Have One Hour: Developing A Standardized Library Orientation And Evaluating Student Learning, Elizabeth Brown

Library Scholarship

Library orientations continue to excite, or plague, instruction librarians everywhere. Reaching first year students early can preempt academic heartache and research woes, yet the question of “what students really need” continues to evolve. This article presents a case study of a large-scale implementation of library orientations. The main issue addressed in this article involves a systematic review of students’ post-instruction responses and assessment of their learning. Related elements mentioned in this article include: interdepartmental participation; curriculum design; and instructional technology. While this implementation may not be appropriate for all academic libraries, its components may offer ideas for augmenting existing programs …

Discussion of the importance of using web design to create research guides that not only contain relevant information, but are mobile friendly and easily accessible. LibGuides is an online content creation package that allows all libraries to curate resources into research guides that best fit the needs of their patrons. Research guides can be a valuable resource, but they must be designed effectively. The goal of this session is to highlight the value of research guides, and also the best practices to use when creating online resources. These include not only the amount and type of content, but also layout …

Intentionality And Transparency As Pedagogical Techniques In The Information Literacy Classroom, Beth Fuchs 2017 University of Kentucky

Intentionality And Transparency As Pedagogical Techniques In The Information Literacy Classroom, Beth Fuchs

Library Presentations

When you build a lesson plan for a class session, how do you decide on its content and activities? What if you started to peel back the curtain a bit and let students in on some of your thinking and intentions? Recent research from The Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Project at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has shown that students benefit when teachers articulate the thought processes behind instructional decisions and goals with them. This relatively small intervention, traditionally applied to assignment design, has shown to have a big impact. How can the results of …

Embracing Challenges In Times Of Change: A Survey Of The Readiness Of Academic Librarians In New Jersey For Transition To The Acrl Framework, Leslin H. Charles

Communications in Information Literacy

Many academic librarians in the state of New Jersey (NJ) have successfully integrated information literacy (IL) into the curriculum using the ACRL IL Competency Standards for Higher Education (Standards). These Standards formed the underpinnings of IL curriculum mapping and assessment plans, and have been adopted by administrators in higher education institutions across the state. The advent of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (Framework) prompted the author to survey IL coordinators to investigate how their institutions are embracing the opportunities presented by the challenge of looking at IL through this new lens. This paper presents a snapshot …

Communications in Information Literacy

This project considers the efficacy and scalability of embedded librarianship initiatives within the City University of New York (CUNY) library system and presents findings of an original research study conducted in 2015. Through an analysis of recent LIS literature on embedment, response data from a survey of librarians, and a selection of library position descriptions, this article examines the implications of embedment practices for librarians and libraries. By shedding light on the extent and context of embedment, the platforms used in virtual embedment scenarios, and obstacles that librarians presently face, this study aims to pinpoint strategies for embedded librarianship initiatives …

Asking Questions In The Classroom: An Exploration Of Tools And Techniques Used In The Library Instruction Classroom, Sara Maurice Whitver, Leo S. Lo

Communications in Information Literacy

This study explores the tools and techniques used within the library instruction classroom to facilitate a conversation about teaching practices. Researchers focused on the questioning methods employed by librarians, specifically the number of questions asked by librarians and students. This study was comprised of classroom observations of a team of librarians working towards standardized learning outcomes; members of the team had the freedom to independently develop lesson plans and choose teaching approaches for each class. Observations measured the frequency of questions asked of and answered by librarians and students in library instruction sessions via oral discussion, worksheets, and polling. Researchers …
