It discusses some of the unique challenges with creating profiles in a health system environment and the need to set clearly communicated limitations of the project.

Background: The Emerging Technologies Internship program aims to provide 12th grade high school students an opportunity to explore, use and develop unique applications of 3D printing/scanning, virtual reality, and digital devices. BACKGROUND: A multidisciplinary group at Children's Mercy Kansas City applied for and received the NNLM MCR's Immersive Workshop Grant in December, 2017, and used the funding to organize and host a two-day immersive, interprofessional workshop in April, 2018, that 1) brought together health literacy-invested groups and individuals within the Kansas City community to learn about health literacy including cultural, language, numeracy and digital inclusion factors; and 2) provided specialized training to targeted CM participants to improve the provision of bedside health information to patients and caregivers. This study provides a systematic comparison of services and staffing within academic health sciences libraries serving College of Osteopathic Medicine programs in the U.S. Library directors, not only those affiliated with new medical schools, but also with long- standing, and more traditional schools, can use this data to make a case for new resources, services, or staffing. In addition, medical school administrators may find opportunities in this study’s results for more productive collaborations with the library, in areas such as curriculum-integrated instruction, research development, and scholarly publishing. Background: In the development of a new institutional repository, library staff at a large health system were faced with building an organizational structure that would be meaningful to both internal and external users. The health system context meant unique challenges designing a taxonomy that supported end users as well as institutional goals and branding. Health systems have unique user needs for specialized collections and organizational schemes. Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

Background: In January 2018, library services at Providence Health/Swedish and St. Joseph Health merged to form a single, unified system, incorporating nine libraries and sixteen full-time staff. We faced several challenges in collecting and reporting service statistics, including the disparate methods of our legacy organizations, the variation in services offered at different libraries, and our large geographic spread. Our merged library serves patrons in seven states, and much of our work, including communication with patrons and each other, is conducted over email.

Institutional Repository Workflow, Project Management, And Outreach In A Remote/Online Library Environment, Daina Dickman

In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

Lgbtqia-R: Creating A Diverse And Inclusive Medical Collection At A Public Metropolitan University, Heidi Blackburn, Omer Farooq

Information about the LGBTQIA population is difficult to collect because of the sensitive nature of the topic of sexual preference and gender identity. This paper examines our weeding project and collection development efforts to provide health care information for the LGBTQIA community at a Midwestern metropolitan university. The findings conclude that our collection was not providing sufficient, up-to-date health information for the personal and professional information needs of our patrons in the R-RZ Library of Congress range. The weeding process, strategies for working with department faculty, and the implications for an intersectional medical collection are discussed.

Background: In an era of financial constraint hospital libraries are facing closer scrutiny and must prove their value in order to survive. Leadership at a large health system library found the traditional written annual report lacked the impact needed to capture the attention and the imagination of administration. Taking different approaches over the years, this library has found a solution that is “just right”, creating three very different documents – small, medium, and large – to demonstrate its worth.
