Efficient Deselection And Other Stories: A Fellowship At Unc Charlotte, Stephen G. Krueger

Charleston Library Conference

This paper will describe the collection development project done by a summer fellow at the J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The project took place over the summer of 2016. The fellow worked with the health sciences librarian and the collection development librarian to assess the health sciences resources held by the library. Elements included compiling acquisition recommendations, surveying faculty and other health sciences librarians, drafting a collection development policy, and recommending titles for deselection. The deselection section also served as a pilot for a larger library-wide project.

Stretching Your Dollars: Saving On Online Content, Linda Creibaum, Jeff Bailey

Charleston Library Conference

This session, led by two librarians with decades of combined acquisitions experience, was based on the premise that although quality databases can be expensive and only the most fortunate of libraries have unlimited or even plentiful financial resources, there are ways to save funds on these resources. The presenters shared their knowledge about ways to stretch finite library acquisitions funds.

Linda Creibaum and Jeff Bailey emphasized tools and strategies attendees could use to save valuable funds on databases and subscriptions. Discussion topics included consortial and volume discounts, the advantages of taking a trial, the importance of keeping notes and checking …

Where Is The Library Budget Going? Using Ils Fund Codes And Reports For Fiscal Accountability, Debbi Smith 2017 Adelphi University

Where Is The Library Budget Going? Using Ils Fund Codes And Reports For Fiscal Accountability, Debbi Smith

Charleston Library Conference

Our collections continue to migrate to an online environment, but often administrators outside the library are tied to fiscal concepts that do not reflect new formats and modes of access. Administrators look at electronic resource expenditures and don’t always understand that they are not just for databases but also for e-journals and e-books that can be subscribed to or owned. Fund code structures that are built into instrument landing systems (ILS) such as Innovative’s Sierra can be used to demonstrate how material budgets are expended by format and function, which can then be tied into more formal assessment and analysis …

Budgeting In An Academic Library: A Lively Lunch Discussion, Karin Wikoff

Charleston Library Conference

Are you always seeking to improve budgeting in your academic library? Are you fascinated by the challenge of predicting costs for subscriptions? I went on an "Academic Library Budgeting Roadshow," and had discussions with peers at seven other institutions. In this session, I will present a summary of my findings, then pose the same questions to the group. We'll discuss everything from the budget process and timeline, to allocating funds, to predicting subscription costs, to what you do if you go over or under budget, to flexibility, to deposit accounts, to Zero-Based Budgeting, to the biggest challenges we each face. …

Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris 2017 University of Dayton

Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

Digital information resources are a vitally important and increasingly large component of academic libraries’ collection and preservation responsibilities. This includes content converted to and originating from digital form (born-digital). Preserving digital material, such as social media and websites, is essential for ensuring that future generations know everyone’s story, especially those groups which have been historically underrepresented in official records. This presentation will detail the steps undertaken by a digital preservation task force to first assess the weaknesses in current practice, and then develop a plan to implement a digital preservation policy and workflow. As part of the project, the task …

Aspects Of Author Queries And The Role Of Library Resources In Manuscript Crafting, philip chike Aghadiuno 2017 nasarawa state polytechnic lafia, Nigeria

Aspects Of Author Queries And The Role Of Library Resources In Manuscript Crafting, Philip Chike Aghadiuno

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Manuscripts sent to editors are often in different states of crafting or drafting. It is the task of the editor to help the author by polishing the manuscripts to the acceptable standard. Editors may seek clarifications from the authors about the missing links in the drafts. They may ask for references of strong claims, improvement of the draft, refinement of the argument, adjustment in tone, chapter re-organisation, fixing grammar points, among others. Editors raise these flags in the editorial process through author queries. The nature of queries written by the editor for the author differs from the ones written by …

The Need For The Establishment Of E-Records And Ehealth Legislation And Policy Framework In The Health Sector In Zimbabwe, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo 2017 National University of Science and Technology - Zimbabwe

The Need For The Establishment Of E-Records And Ehealth Legislation And Policy Framework In The Health Sector In Zimbabwe, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Legislation is key to the establishment of eHealth initiatives. Without legislation, authority is not set and the privacy, confidentiality and other threats affecting records and information in electronic platforms are compromised. It is therefore key that legislation for eHealth and e-records be established. Zimbabwe is applying eHealth initiatives in the form of an electronic National Health Information System (NHIS) and other initiatives. However, worrying is the fact that Zimbabwe has not paid attention to the development of legislation and policies for eHealth and e-records management in general. This study sought to make a case for the establishment of e-records and …

African Indigenous Knowledge: An Underutilised And Neglected Resource For Development, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo, Charity Baloyi 2017 National University of Science and Technology - Zimbabwe

African Indigenous Knowledge: An Underutilised And Neglected Resource For Development, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo, Charity Baloyi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Indigenous knowledge points to the fact that Africa has been able to generate, test and apply knowledge through its own methodologies and approaches. This knowledge sustained communities for years prior to colonialism which somehow downplayed the value of indigenous knowledge and promoted western knowledge systems. Colonialism created dependence on western knowledge systems and Africa has over the years neglected its own rich indigenous knowledge. This paper sought tohighlight challenges faced in the quest to incorporate IK into developmental goals and projects. Furthermore, the study also sought to recommend ways through which Africans can promote IK in its developmental projects. A …

Bibliotaxonomy: Definition, Scope And Implication For Lis Scholarship, Chuma O. Nnadozie 2017 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Bibliotaxonomy: Definition, Scope And Implication For Lis Scholarship, Chuma O. Nnadozie

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The paper introduces bibliotaxonomy as a generic name for those aspects of Library and Information Science (LIS) scholarship that deal with the processing and organization of books, documents and other information materials. It traces the origin of, and inspiration for bibliotaxonomy to different taxonomic practices in various communities, societies, as well as earlier philosophical and botanical classifications. A sketch of the contours of the field of bibliotaxonomy was presented which shows that this phenomenon cuts across specific library technical services of cataloguing, classification, indexing and accessioning. In addition, successful application of taxonomic principles from other disciplines in the organization of …

Closing Talk: Progress And Poverty: The Paradox Of Scholarly Communication In The Digital Age, John Wenzler

SJSU Open Access Conference

We live in an era of unprecedented scholarly productivity and vastly improved scholarly communication. Academic researchers today have immediate access to an immense volume of scholarly articles and research data that would have amazed a researchers of 25 years ago. Today, my library at a medium-sized Masters institution, offers students and faculty an online Discovery System that provides direct access to millions of articles and nearly 80,000 online journals -- increasing the amount of scholarly information available to our patrons by 20, 30, 40 times? ... I don't know -- compared to what was available to them in 1980. So, …

Images Of Agua Y Tierra: Changing The Narrative Of Chicano/Mexicano Farming, Kathryn Blackmer Reyes

SJSU Open Access Conference

This presentation will consider how almost 10,000 pictures from the Chicano/Mexicano farming communities of the Upper Rio Grande Valley of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico can contribute and alter the narrative of farm working. This digital collection documents over 30 years of farming with acequias, or communal irrigation canals, and captures themes of food production, the care of the land and environment, and water management. In a time where large-scale agribusiness is fomented by Monsanto chemicals and seed control, these farmers work to maintain acequia agriculture. The presenter will discuss how her efforts with The Acequia Institute and …

Building Ethnically Diverse Digital Collections, Kathryn Blackmer Reyes, Emily K. Chan, April Gilbert 2017 San Jose State University

Building Ethnically Diverse Digital Collections, Kathryn Blackmer Reyes, Emily K. Chan, April Gilbert

SJSU Open Access Conference

Building ethnically diverse collections has always been challenging -- either because minority communities do not see traditional institutions as keepers of their histories or librarians/archivists are not embedded sufficiently in the communities to recognize the value of their materials. And lastly, when communities do donate physical materials, processing and enabling access to these collections can often be slow, due to a myriad of reasons. The perception of a lack of public interest may lead to low processing priority, which only increases the potential for loss. Minority communities' motivation may be negatively impacted, furthering mistrust of traditional institutions and harming any …

Open Access Publishing In Southeast Asia, Zoë McLaughlin 2017 University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Open Access Publishing In Southeast Asia, Zoë Mclaughlin

SJSU Open Access Conference

Throughout Southeast Asia, universities are turning to open access publishing for their journals. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education has advised all universities to use Open Journal Systems as a means for archiving and displaying their content. However, these journals and others of their kind remain poorly indexed and volatile. What is the current state of journal publishing in Southeast Asia? How can the positive aspects of open access be harnessed to allow for more discoverability and use of scholarly research from Southeast Asia? In this lightning talk, I will provide an overview of open access …

Opening Talk: What Is Access? Thinking Beyond Online Availability To A More Just Scholarly Communication System, Charlotte Roh

SJSU Open Access Conference

We've come so far with the open access movement on the institutional, state, federal, and even international level. It's fair to say that the open access movement has in fact changed the landscape of scholarly publishing. But there are also things that haven't changed, and injustices that remain, that we need to consider in how scholarly knowledge is traditionally constructed.

This poster was presented at DC-HUG 2017 in Rolla, MO. Forsyth Digital Collections presents their content on more than one digital collections platform. Since the acquisition of Digital Commons and the launch of the FHSU Scholars Repository in January 2016, there has been an institutional effort to determine which platform is best suited to displaying existing content. Beginning in 2009, the FHSU Reveille Yearbooks collection had been hosted in CONTENTdm. This collection suffered from issues relating to access and user experience. In 2014 additional effort was put into improving the collection though those efforts did not achieve the desired result. …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The library and Information science (LIS) profession have evolved over time taking advantage of prevailing technology. The arrival of computers and other communication technologies led to major changes in the ways library services are rendered and the profession practiced. Library Management Systems (LMS) is one of such earlier areas where ICT have been applied to the operations of the library during the library computerization era. The arrival of the renascent Cloud Computing is generating new areas of research in relation to librarians’ uptake of this new technology. Cloud computing is being leveraged by developers of library systems to facilitate the …
