Building An Archives For Butte, America, Ellen Crain, Donna Mccrea

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

In 1981 only a few residents and scholars knew about the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives and even fewer used its services, but by 2006 the archives was providing research assistance to more than 4,000 people each year. In 2007, Butte’s voters, proud of the archives and its role in the preservation of their heritage, approved a $7.5 million bond to support it. This case study outlines how almost twenty years of advocacy by the archives staff, Friends, and board increased access to collections, improved community awareness, and ultimately resulted in a state-of-the-art facility for Butte’s records of enduring value.

Low-staffed and often under-funded, academic libraries have traditionally relied upon student labor to maintain library services and to complete a seemingly unending workload. The use of students within the archival or special collections setting is no different. Special Collections departments often use students to complete tasks that could be reserved to the realm of professional staff. These include processing collections, preservation and conservation work, digitizing, and providing reference assistance.

Every morning I drive to work past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a highly regarded college in the northeast for engineers, architects, mathematicians, and a predictable array of geeks and techno-nerds as well as a couple of what my daughter would term ―hot college kids.‖ What fascinates me during my drive, beyond the people-watching opportunities, is a banner displayed on the overpass linking the two sides of campus that poses one simple question to the students: ―Why not change the world?‖

The Mass. Memories Road Show (http://blogs.umb.edu/massmemories) is a public scanning project based at the University of Massachusetts Boston which partners with local communities to digitize family photographs and stories at public events with the goal of creating a digital portrait of all the 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. This article describes how the project works to ensure broad participation in the planning and execution of the project, as well as a detailed description of the logistics of a Road Show event, which could be replicated in other communities.

Thirty-seven colleges and universities in North Carolina offer advanced degrees, and most require a thesis or dissertation. The websites of thirteen (35%) indicate they accept or require electronic submission of dissertations and/or theses (ETD). How do these institutions handle the interdepartmental communication and collaboration needs of ETD programs? To begin answering this question, this study examines current practices among ETD administrators in North Carolina and in current national literature, paying special attention to communication, collaboration, workflows, and divisions of labor. American First Ladies As Goodwill Ambassadors, Wendy W. Tan

Quite a few First Ladies took very active moves regarding international interests, and they often weighed in their opinions on their husbands’ decisions on related issues. My research was mainly conducted in five Presidential Libraries associated with five well-traveled First Ladies. After studying hundreds of journeys they made, my descriptions were focused on five, one for each lady, of them only. All of these trips shared a common trait, which was under the calling of humanitarian cause.
