We've Got Mail: Email Preservation At A Small, Private University, Nahali Croft

This paper discusses the obstacles and solutions to implementing an email preservation system at a small university. I reviewed five possible programs for the best fit for the situation, though only three were considered seriously for implementation. At the conclusion, I discuss why the path taken was most appropriate, which may benefit others looking to implement similar systems.

According to the nineteenth-century Massachusetts Senator John C. Crosby, “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” In a field where technology, priorities, and job responsibilities are constantly changing and challenging professionals, mentoring has become an essential tool to ensure the success of individuals at all levels of their careers. This article highlights the establishment of two regional archival organization mentoring programs that have taken the traditional model of mentoring relationships and expanded it to better fit the needs of their communities. Producing a daily public radio show while preserving past content and metadata for public access is both time-consuming and difficult, particularly for a small staff untrained in archival techniques. Over the past decade, however, Fresh Air with Terry Gross has made a concerted effort to preserve its collection, by digitizing and standardizing the metadata in its archives in order to ensure future public access to its material. In this paper, we detail why Fresh Air’s archives and other audio-dominant collections deserve such urgent attention, and present a case study for how a small public radio institution successfully managed an archival …

In 2014 librarians at the Claremont Colleges Library piloted a 2-part workshop series that gave graduate students the opportunity to closely read a primary source as artifact, explore related digital primary sources, identify interesting research questions, and find secondary scholarship that spoke to those questions. This Primary Source Workshop series was developed collaboratively by special collections librarians, subject liaison librarians, and graduate faculty. The series has since been adapted for a variety of graduate and undergraduate classes. Student organizations are a unique feature of university life whose records merit preservation. Since the mid-to-late 1990s, these records have been increasingly transitioning from analog format to a digital, web-based platform; a pattern that has only picked-up in the 2000s. This paper looks at a case study of the New York University Archives and its attempt to archive student organizations using the Archive-It service.

"Archival Enactment, Retelling 'The Big Book': Alison Knowles, Something Else Press and Fluxus," positions Knowles’ Big Book (1966) as a case study of historical methodology and interdisciplinary artistic practice in the post-war period. This comprehensive analysis of Big Book, a work of art no longer extant, contextualizes its publisher, Something Else Press through Dick Higgins’ concept of “intermedia,” and important lesser-known junctures relevant to Fluxus and the group’s leader George Maciunas are illuminated. Knowles' early and lesser-known silkscreen paintings are also examined.
