Finding Aid For The Valenti Collection Of Early Aids Imprints, William M. Valenti

Finding Aids

In the 1980s, Dr. William M. Valenti became an early leader in the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients in Rochester, NY. The collection documents his career as a physician and as founder of Community Health Network, Inc., a not-for-profit community based medical facility for HIV care. The collection also documents the global medical response to the emergence of HIV/AIDS and changing cultural attitudes towards those infected with the virus. The collection includes published books and periodicals, newspaper clippings, and a small amount of graphic and audiovisual material.

Much has changed in libraries and society since the publication of the 2004 revision of the Nebraska Library Association Intellectual Freedom Manual. The consensus of the current members of the Nebraska Library Association round table on Intellectual Freedom (NLA IF) was not to just revise the former manual, but to create an entirely new edition. In 2014, the Marian Library at the University of Dayton completed a long overdue revision of its collection development policy. The new document more clearly defined the scope of the library’s collections, and was intended to guide new acquisition decisions. However, this new document had the unexpected benefit of providing a framework for deselection projects that enabled preservation and improved access to the collections.

This paper will discuss and analyze two of these projects, and demonstrate how the revised collection development policy laid the foundation for successful deselection outcomes. In the first case study, legacy collections of genre-based ephemera were …
