Master's Projects
Low grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS) is rare form of cancer, account- ing for about 0.2% of all uterine cancer cases. Approximately 75% of LGESS patients are initially misdiagnosed with leiomyoma, which is a type of benign tumor that is also known as fibroids. In this research, uterine tissue biopsy images of potential LGESS patients are preprocessed using segmentation and staining normalization algorithms. A wide variety of classic machine learning and leading deep learning models are then applied to classify tissue images as either benign or cancerous. For classic techniques, the highest classification accuracy we attain is 85%, while our …

Master's Projects
Social networking sites are important to connect with the world virtually. As the number of users accessing these sites increase, the data and information keeps on increasing. There are communities and groups which are formed virtually based on different factors. We can visualize these communities as networks of users or nodes and the relationships or connections between them as edges. This helps in evaluating and analyzing different factors that influence community formation in such a dense network. Community detection helps in revealing certain characteristics which makes these groups in the network unique and different from one another. We can use …

Wildfire Risk Prediction For A Smart City, Rekha Rani
Master's Projects
Wildfires are uncontrolled fires that may lead to the destruction of biodiversity, soil fertility, and human resources. There is a need for timely detection and prediction of wildfires to minimize their disastrous effects. In this research, we propose a wildfire prediction model that relies on multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) to explicitly evaluates multiple conflicting criteria in decision making and weave the wildfire risks into the city’s resiliency plan. We incorporate fuzzy set theory to handle imprecision and uncertainties. In the process, we create a new data set that includes California cities’ weather, vegetation, topography, and population density records. The model …

Image-Based Real Estate Appraisal Using Cnns And Ensemble Learning, Prathamesh Dnyanesh Kumkar
Master's Projects
Real Estate Appraisal is performed to evaluate properties during a range of activities like buying, selling, mortgaging, or insuring. Traditionally, this process is done by real estate brokers who consider factors like the location of a house, its area, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, along with other amenities to assess the property. This approach is quite subjective since different brokers may arrive at a different quote for the same property depending on their analysis. The development in machine learning algorithms has given rise to several Automated Valuation Models (AVMs) to estimate real estate prices. Real estate websites use such …

With the introduction of Statcast in 2015, baseball analytics have become more precise. Statcast allows every play to be accurately tracked and the data it generates is easily accessible through Baseball Savant, which opens the opportunity for improved performance statistics to be developed. In this paper we propose a new tool, Pitcher Effectiveness, that uses Statcast data to evaluate starting pitchers dynamically, based on the results of in-game outcomes after each pitch. Pitcher Effectiveness successfully predicts instances where starting pitchers give up several runs, which we believe make it a new and important tool for the in-game and post-game evaluation …

Major Depression Disorder (MDD) is a common disease throughout the world that negatively influences people’s lives. Early diagnosis of MDD is beneficial, so detecting practical biomarkers would aid clinicians in the diagnosis of MDD. Having an automated method to find biomarkers for MDD is helpful even though it is difficult. The main aim of this research is to generate a method for detecting discriminative features for MDD diagnosis based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data.
In this research, representational similarity analysis provides a framework to compare distributed patterns and obtain the similarity/dissimilarity of brain regions. Regions are obtained by either …

Analyses And Creation Of Author Stylized Text, Keith Carlson
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Written text is one of the major ways that humans communicate their thoughts. A single thought can be expressed through many different combinations of words, and the writer must choose which they will use. We call the idea which is communicated the content of the message, and the particular words chosen to express the content, the style. The same content expressed in a different style may tell something useful about the author of the text (e.g., the author's identity), may be easier to understand for different audiences, or may evoke different emotions in the reader.
In this work we explore …

Fixed Pattern Noise Non-Uniformity Correction through K-Means Clustering
Fixed pattern noise removal from imagery by software correction is a practical approach compared to a physical hardware correction because it allows for correction post-capture of the imagery. Fixed pattern noise presents a unique challenge for de-noising techniques as the noise does not present itself where large number statistics are effective. Traditional noise removal techniques such as blurring or despeckling produce poor correction results because of a lack of noise identification. Other correction methods developed for fixed pattern noise can often present another problem of misidentification of noise. This problem can result …

Despite significant advances in the field of face analysis over last decade, the current studies are still limited to specific face computation tasks using deep learning approaches. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end hierarchical deep learning structure, called Multi-Features Convolutional Neural Networks (MFCNN), which can comprehensively implement face analysis including age, gender, race and emotion. Moreover, we take the advantages of the mutual support among different facial features from individual tasks to improve the performance of our model. We also contribute one all-labeling dataset called Multiple Facial Features Computation (MFFC) based on Apparent-age-V2 dataset. Firstly, we train four different …

A Comparison Of Word Embedding Techniques For Similarity Analysis, Tyler Gerth
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
There have been a multitude of word embedding techniques developed that allow a computer to process natural language and compare the relationships between different words programmatically. In this paper, similarity analysis, or the testing of words for synonymic relations, is used to compare several of these techniques to see which performs the best. The techniques being compared all utilize the method of creating word vectors, reducing words down into a single vector of numerical values that denote how the word relates to other words that appear around it. In order to get a holistic comparison, multiple analyses were made, with …

Data Forgery Detection In Automatic Generation Control: Exploration Of Automated Parameter Generation And Low-Rate Attacks, Yatish R. Dubasi
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Automatic Generation Control (AGC) is a key control system utilized in electric power systems. AGC uses frequency and tie-line power flow measurements to determine the Area Control Error (ACE). ACE is then used by the AGC to adjust power generation and maintain an acceptable power system frequency. Attackers might inject false frequency and/or tie-line power flow measurements to mislead AGC into falsely adjusting power generation, which can harm power system operations. Various data forgery detection models are studied in this thesis. First, to make the use of predictive detection models easier for users, we propose a method for automated generation …

Bioinformatic analysis is a time-consuming process for labs performing research on various microbiomes. Researchers use tools like Qiime2 to help standardize the bioinformatic analysis methods, but even large, extensible platforms like Qiime2 have drawbacks due to the attention required by researchers. In this project, we propose to automate additional standard lab bioinformatic procedures by eliminating the existing manual process of determining the trim and truncate locations for paired end 2 sequences. We introduce a new Qiime2 plugin called TruncTrimmer to automate the process that usually requires the researcher to make a decision on where to trim and truncate manually after …
