Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus
Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates how the snow-albedo feedback mechanism of the arctic is changing in response to rising climate temperatures. Specifically, the interplay of vegetation and snowmelt, and how these two variables can be correlated. This has the potential to refine climate modelling of the spring transition season. Research was conducted at the ecoregion scale in northern Alaska from 2000 to 2020. Each ecoregion is defined by distinct topographic and ecological conditions, allowing for meaningful contrast between the patterns of spring albedo transition across surface conditions and vegetation types. The five most northerly ecoregions of Alaska are chosen as they encompass …

International Programs
This poster highlights how active remote sensors such as weather radar are completely useful for hail detection given its feature and the information they produce. Hail detection is already well studied by the atmospheric scientific community and dual polarimetric variables values for hail signature are presented according to those advances. Then, a supervised classification technique is showed to illustrated how machine learning can be integrated to radar information for automatic hail detection. However, this fuzzy logic algorithm has the capability to distinguish between meteorological and non-meteorological echoes. This automatic information might help forecasters from National Weather Services – NWS to …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
An algorithm designer working with parallel computing systems should know how the characteristics of their implemented algorithm affects various performance aspects of their parallel program. It would be beneficial to these designers if each algorithm came with a specific set of standards that identified which algorithms worked better for a specified system. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to take implementations of four graphing algorithms, extract their features such as memory consumption, scalability using profilers (Vtunes /Tau) to determine which algorithms work to their fullest potential in one of the three systems: GPU, shared memory system, or distributed memory …

Abstract: Calculating planar arrays pattern is time-consuming in flight simulation whose frame synchronization time is within tens of milliseconds and this would cause removing frames. To resolve this problem, a graphic simulation method was presented to simulate planar arrays' pattern. Based on analyzing ideal patterns' graphic characteristics, a kernel function was constructed whose graphics could reflect all those pattern's characteristics. Then this kernel's graphics being used as a section plane were rotated in the spatial coordinates to match the ideal pattern. The simulation results show that this method can be rapidly calculated and the simulated pattern is highly true to …

Abstract: Conventional image compositing algorithms are designed for homogeneous environments. These algorithms do not take heterogeneity into account and do not make use of the properties of an order-independent compositing operator. As for order-independent image compositing problems in a heterogeneous environment, these algorithms usually can not make full use of the resources. An order-independent image compositing algorithm in heterogeneous environments was proposed, which was able to distribute the workload according to computing and networking characteristics, and managed to optimize compositing scheme by utilizing the properties of order-independent operator. A comprehensive evaluation on the ns-3 network simulator was conducted. Experiment results …

An integral sliding mode control method was applied in the inner loop attitude control and a PID controller was designed in the outer loop position control. Due to the under-actuated property of the quadrotor model, desired pitch and roll angles were given by outer loop controller. The stability of the designed control system was proved by Lyapunov stability theorem. Simulation results on Matlab show the effectiveness of the proposed control system …
