The Impact Of Custom Rom Backups On Android External Storage Erasure, Haydon Hope, Peter Hannay

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

The Android operating system is the current market leader on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. The core operating system is open source and has a number of developers creating variants of this operating system. These variants, often referred to as custom ROMs are available for a wide number of mobile devices. Custom ROMs provide a number of features, such as enhanced control over the operating system, variation in user interfaces and so on. The process of installing custom ROMs is often accomplished through the use of a ROM manager application. Such applications often provide mechanisms to back …

Rapid Forensic Crime Scene Analysis Using Inexpensive Sensors, Dan Blackman 2014 Edith Cowan University, Western Australia Police

Rapid Forensic Crime Scene Analysis Using Inexpensive Sensors, Dan Blackman

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Network forensics and Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) have ultimately become so important to corporations that in many cases they have been relied upon to identify the actions of offenders and to provide sufficient details to prosecute them. Unfortunately, as data links on corporate networks have increased to saturation, more information is being missed and even though corporations have spent heavily acquiring loud, power hungry devices to monitor their networks. A more power efficient solution, which consumes less electricity, yet provides the same or better packet inspection is an obvious solution.. This paper discusses a possible solution using a cluster …

I Remember Richelieu: Is Anything Secure Anymore?, Michael G. Crowley, Michael N. Johnstone

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

Petraeus-gate, hacked nude celebrity photos in the cloud and the recent use of a search and seizure warrant in the United States of America to seek production of customer email contents on an extraterritorial server raises important issues for the supposably safe storage of data on the World Wide Web. Not only may there be nowhere to hide in cyberspace but nothing in cyberspace may be private. This paper explores the legal and technical issues raised by the these matters with emphasis on the courts decision “In the Matter of a Warrant to Search a Certain E-Mail Account Controlled and …

On The Security Of Auditing Mechanisms For Secure Cloud Storage, Yong YU, Lei NIU, Guomin YANG, Yi MU, Willy SUSILO 2014 Singapore Management University

On The Security Of Auditing Mechanisms For Secure Cloud Storage, Yong Yu, Lei Niu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud computing is a novel computing model that enables convenient and on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources. Auditing services are highly essential to make sure that the data is correctly hosted in the cloud. In this paper, we investigate the active adversary attacks in three auditing mechanisms for shared data in the cloud, including two identity privacy-preserving auditing mechanisms called Oruta and Knox, and a distributed storage integrity auditing mechanism. We show that these schemes become insecure when active adversaries are involved in the cloud storage. Specifically, an active adversary can arbitrarily alter the cloud data without …

File Detection On Network Traffic Using Approximate Matching, Frank Breitinger, Ibrahim Baggili 2014 University of New Haven

File Detection On Network Traffic Using Approximate Matching, Frank Breitinger, Ibrahim Baggili

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In recent years, Internet technologies changed enormously and allow faster Internet connections, higher data rates and mobile usage. Hence, it is possible to send huge amounts of data / files easily which is often used by insiders or attackers to steal intellectual property. As a consequence, data leakage prevention systems (DLPS) have been developed which analyze network traffic and alert in case of a data leak. Although the overall concepts of the detection techniques are known, the systems are mostly closed and commercial. Within this paper we present a new technique for network traffic analysis based on approximate matching (a.k.a …

From 55 serious participants, a data set of 5,772 responses regarding the relevance of nineteen types of digital evidence for all the seven types of digital investigations was obtained. The results showed that (i) SMS belongs to the most relevant …

Evaluating The Security Vulenerabilities Of The Ip6to4 Tunnelling Mechanism, Brian Cusack, Raymond Lutui 2014 Auckland University of Technology

Evaluating The Security Vulenerabilities Of The Ip6to4 Tunnelling Mechanism, Brian Cusack, Raymond Lutui

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The two versions of Internet Protocol (IP) rely on mechanisms that will convert one protocol to the other and vice versa. Version 4 is still prevalent in the Internet backbone and version 6 in most private networks. In this research we focus on the automatic tunnelling mechanism that provides the encapsulation at one end of the transition tunnel and the de-encapsulation at the other end dependant on the direction of transition. In our research we asked: How secure is the automatic tunnelling mechanism? It is a simple question but important given the number of times transition may occur in any …

Attribute-Based Encryption With Encryption And Decryption Outsourcing, Muhammad Asim, Milan Petkovic, Tanya Ignatenko 2014 Eindhoven University of Technology

Attribute-Based Encryption With Encryption And Decryption Outsourcing, Muhammad Asim, Milan Petkovic, Tanya Ignatenko

Australian Information Security Management Conference

In this paper we propose a new scheme for ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption that allows outsourcing of computationally expensive encryption and decryption steps. The scheme constitutes an important building block for mobile applications where both the host and users use mobile devices with limited computational power. In the proposed scheme, during encryption the host involves a semi-trusted proxy to encrypt a partially encrypted (by the host) message according to an access policy provided by the host. The proxy is unable to learn the message from this partially encrypted text. A user can only decrypt the stored ciphertext if he possesses secret …

Securing Identity Information With Image Watermarks, Brian Cusack, Reza Khaleghparas 2014 Auckland University of Technology

Securing Identity Information With Image Watermarks, Brian Cusack, Reza Khaleghparas

Australian Information Security Management Conference

In this paper, we describe the requirements for embedding watermarks in images used for identity verification and demonstrate a proof of concept in security sciences. The watermarking application is designed for verifying the rightful ownership of a driving license or similar identity object. The tool we built and tested embeds and extracts watermarks that contain verification information of the rightful owner. We used the human finger print of the rightful owner as the watermark. Such information protection mechanisms add an extra layer of security to the information system and improve verification of identification attributes by providing strong security. The issues …

An Analysis Of Security Issues In Building Automation Systems, Matthew Peacock, Michael N. Johnstone 2014 Edith Cowan University

An Analysis Of Security Issues In Building Automation Systems, Matthew Peacock, Michael N. Johnstone

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The purpose of Building Automation Systems (BAS) is to centralise the management of a wide range of building services, through the use of integrated protocol and communication media. Through the use of IP-based communication and encapsulated protocols, BAS are increasingly being connected to corporate networks and also being remotely accessed for management purposes, both for convenience and emergency purposes. These protocols, however, were not designed with security as a primary requirement, thus the majority of systems operate with sub-standard or non-existent security implementations, relying on security through obscurity. Research has been undertaken into addressing the shortfalls of security implementations in …

Persistent Issues In Encryption Software: A Heuristic And Cognitive Walkthrough, Jad El-Abed, Patryk Szewczyk 2014 Edith Cowan University

Persistent Issues In Encryption Software: A Heuristic And Cognitive Walkthrough, Jad El-Abed, Patryk Szewczyk

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The support information accompanying security software can be difficult to understand by end-users, who have little knowledge in cyber security. One mechanism for ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of information is encryption software. Unfortunately, software usability issues can hinder an end-user’s capability to properly utilise the security features effectively. To date there has been little research in investigating the usability of encryption software and proposing solutions for improving them. This research paper analysed the usability of encryption software targeting end-users. The research identified several issues that could impede the ability of a novice end-user to adequately utilise the encryption software. …

Measuring Security: A Challenge For The Generation, Janusz Zalewski, Steven Drager, William Mckeever, Andrew J. Kornecki

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Daytona Beach

This paper presents an approach to measuring computer security understood as a system property, in the category of similar properties, such as safety, reliability, dependability, resilience, etc. First, a historical discussion of measurements is presented, beginning with views of Hermann von Helmholtz in his 19th century work “Zählen und Messen”. Then, contemporary approaches related to the principles of measuring software properties are discussed, with emphasis on statistical, physical and software models. A distinction between metrics and measures is made to clarify the concepts. A brief overview of inadequacies of methods and techniques to evaluate computer security is presented, followed by …

Is Your Online Data Really Private?, Nathan Pitchaikani

A with Honors Projects

In the present age everyone depends on technology. At least once per day someone uses a machine to help them accomplish their tasks. For example, imagine not using a cell phone for a whole day. These days, machines contain personal information or data about their owner. In most cases this isn’t an issue. However, with technology becoming more advanced day by day, there has become a reason to worry. People are able to illegally enter other people’s computers and steal information. Leading to the point that being able to protect one’s personal data is crucial. Learning how to safeguard one’s …

Suitability Of Lacunarity Measure For Blind Steganalysis, Ahmed Ibrahim 2014 Edith Cowan University

Suitability Of Lacunarity Measure For Blind Steganalysis, Ahmed Ibrahim

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Blind steganalysis performance is influenced by several factors including the features used for classification. This paper investigates the suitability of using lacunarity measure as a potential feature vectorfor blind steganalysis. Differential Box Counting (DBC) based lacunarity measure has been employed using the traditional sequential grid (SG) and a new radial strip (RS) approach. The performance of the multi-class SVM based classifier was unfortunately not what was expected. However, the findings show that both the SG and RS lacunarity produce enough discriminating features that warrant further research.

The data from the honeypots were collected during the period 17th July 2012 and 26th November 2013, a total of 497 active day periods. The analysis in this paper focuses on the techniques used to attempt to gain access to these systems by attacking entities. Although all three honeypots are have the same configuration settings and …

Using Internet Artifacts To Profile A Child Pornography Suspect, Marcus K. Rogers, Kathryn C. Seigfried-Spellar 2014 Purdue University

Using Internet Artifacts To Profile A Child Pornography Suspect, Marcus K. Rogers, Kathryn C. Seigfried-Spellar

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Digital evidence plays a crucial role in child pornography investigations. However, in the following case study, the authors argue that the behavioral analysis or “profiling” of digital evidence can also play a vital role in child pornography investigations. The following case study assessed the Internet Browsing History (Internet Explorer Bookmarks, Mozilla Bookmarks, and Mozilla History) from a suspected child pornography user’s computer. The suspect in this case claimed to be conducting an ad hoc law enforcement investigation. After the URLs were classified (Neutral; Adult Porn; Child Porn; Adult Dating sites; Pictures from Social Networking Profiles; Chat Sessions; Bestiality; Data Cleaning; …

On Cyber Attacks And Signature Based Intrusion Detection For Modbus Based Industrial Control Systems, Wei Gao, Thomas H. Morris

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Industrial control system communication networks are vulnerable to reconnaissance, response injection, command injection, and denial of service attacks. Such attacks can lead to an inability to monitor and control industrial control systems and can ultimately lead to system failure. This can result in financial loss for control system operators and economic and safety issues for the citizens who use these services. This paper describes a set of 28 cyber attacks against industrial control systems which use the MODBUS application layer network protocol. The paper also describes a set of standalone and state based intrusion detection system rules which can be …
