This paper examines the effect of damping on a nonstrictly hyperbolic 2 x 2 system. It is shown that the growth of singularities is not restricted as in the strictly hyperbolic case where dissipation can be strong enough to preserve the smoothness of solutions globally in time. Here, irrespective of the stabilizing properties of damping, solutions are found to break down in finite time on a line where two eigenvalues coincide in state space.

We study geodesics of the H1 Riemannian metric (see article for equation) on the space of inextensible curves (see article for equation). This metric is a regularization of the usual L2 metric on curves, for which the submanifold geometry and geodesic equations have been analyzed already. The H1 geodesic equation represents a limiting case of the Pochhammer-Chree equation from elasticity theory. We show the geodesic equation is C∞ in the Banach topology C1 ([0,1], R2), and thus there is a smooth Riemannian exponential map. Furthermore, if we hold one of the curves fixed, …

In this work, we present analytic formulas for calculating the critical buckling states of some plastic axial columns of constant cross-sections. The associated critical buckling loads are calculated by Euler-type analytic formulas and the associated deformed shapes are presented in terms of generalized trigonometric functions. The plasticity of the material is defined by the Holloman’s power-law equation. This is an extension of the Euler critical buckling loads of perfect elastic columns to perfect plastic columns. In this paper, it is shown that D. Shelupsky's generalized sine function, and various general sine functions developed by P. Drabek, R. Manasevich and M. Otani, P. Lindqvist, including the generalized Jacobi elliptic sine function of S. Takeuchi can be defined by systems of first order nonlinear ordinary differential equations with initial conditions. The structure of the system of differential equations is shown to be related to the Hamilton System in Lagrangian Mechanics. In this paper we prove the global solvability of a class of fourth-order nonlinear boundary value problems that govern the deformation of a Hollomon’s power-law plastic beam subject to an axial compression and nonlinear lateral constrains. For certain ranges of the acting axial compression force, the solvability of the equations follows from the monotonicity of the fourth order nonlinear differential operator. Beyond these ranges the monotonicity of the operator is lost. It is shown that, in this case, the global solvability may be generated by the lower order nonlinear terms of the equations for a certain type of constrains.

In this work we present some analytic and semi-analytic traveling wave solutions of generalized Burger' equation for isothermal unidirectional flow of viscous non-Newtonian fluids obeying Gee-Lyon nonlinear rheological equation. The solution of Burgers' equation for Newtonian flow as a special case. We also derive estimates of shock thickness for non-Newtonian flows.

Water resources worldwide require management to meet industrial, agricultural, and urban consumption needs. Management actions change the natural flow regime, which impacts the river ecosystem. Water managers are tasked with meeting water needs while mitigating ecosystem im- pacts. We develop process-oriented advection-diffusion-reaction equations that couple hydraulic flow to population growth, and we analyze them to assess the effect of water flow on population persistence. We present a new mathematical framework, based on the net reproductive rate R0 for advection-diffusion-reaction equations and on related measures. The Rankin convolution type Dirichlet series D-F,D-G(s) of Siegel modular forms F and G of degree two, which was introduced by Kohnen and the second author, is computed numerically for various F and G. In particular, we prove that the series D-F,D-G(s), which shares the same functional equation and analytic behavior with the spinor L-functions of eigenforms of the same weight are not linear combinations of those. In order to conduct these experiments a numerical method to compute the Petersson scalar products of Jacobi Forms is developed and discussed in detail.

In this tesis, we present a new Infeasible Interior-Point Method (IPM) for monotone Linear Complementarity Problem (LPC). The advantage of the method is that it uses full Newton-steps, thus, avoiding the calculation of the step size at each iteration. However, by suitable choice of parameters the iterates are forced to stay in the neighborhood of the central path, hence, still guaranteeing the global convergence of the method under strict feasibility assumption. The number of iterations necessary to find -approximate solution of the problem matches the best known iteration bounds for these types of methods. The preliminary implementation of the method …

This dissertation refines and further develops numerical methods for the inversion of the classical Laplace transform and explores the effectiveness of these methods when applied (a) to an asymptotic generalization of the Laplace transform for generalized functions and (b) to the numerical approximation of solutions of ill-posed evolution equations (e.g. backwards in time problems).

"Determining the lifetime of a product is an important component of quality assurance. Traditional life testing methods are infeasible for products that have been designed to have a very long lifetime because they require a lengthy testing period. An alternative method is accelerated degradation testing, where a response variable determining the usability of the product is measured over time under multiple accelerating stress levels. In Chapter 1 we introduce Cahn-Hilliard equations and the time discretization that leads to linear fourth order boundary value problems. In Chapter 2 we review related fundamentals of finite element methods and multigrid methods. For a knot K the cube number is a knot invariant defined to be the smallest n for which there is a cube diagram of size n for K. Examples of knots for which the cube number detects chirality are presented. There is also a Legendrian version of this invariant called the Legendrian cube number. We will show that the Legendrian cube number distinguishes the Legendrian left hand torus knots with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number and maximal rotation number from the Legendrian left hand torus knots with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number and minimal rotation number. In this work, a generic class of metamaterials is introduced and is shown to exhibit frequency dependent double negative effective properties. We develop a rigorous method for calculating the frequency intervals where either double negative or double positive effective properties appear and show how these intervals imply the existence of propagating Bloch waves inside sub-wavelength structures. The branches of the dispersion relation associated with Bloch modes are shown to be explicitly determined by the Dirichlet spectrum of the high dielectric phase and the generalized electrostatic spectra of the complement. In this thesis our fi_x000C_rst concern is the study of the minimal time function corresponding to control problems with constant convex dynamics and closed target sets. Unlike previous work in this area, we do not make any nonempty interior or calmness assumptions and the minimal time functions is generally non-Lipschitzian. We generalize a Paley-Wiener theorem to homogeneous line bundles $L_\chi$ on a compact symmetric space U/K with $\chi$ a nontrivial character of K. The Fourier coefficients of a $\chi$-bi-coinvariant function f on U are defined by integration of f against the elementary spherical functions of type $\chi$ on U, depending on a spectral parameter $\mu$, which in turn parametrizes the $\chi$-spherical representations $\pi$ of U. The Paley-Wiener theorem characterizes f with sufficiently small support in terms of holomorphic extendability and exponential growth of their $\chi$-spherical Fourier transforms.
