We numerically study the dynamics and interactions of vortex rings in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). Single ring dynamics for both bright and dark vortex rings are explored including their traverse velocity, stability, and perturbations resulting in quadrupole oscillations. Multi-ring dynamics of dark vortex rings are investigated, including scattering and merging of two colliding rings, leapfrogging interactions of co-traveling rings, as well as co-moving steady-state multi-ring ensembles. Simulations of choreographed multi-ring setups are also performed, leading to intriguing interaction dynamics.

Tomography is the mathematical process of imaging an object via a set of finite slices. In medical imaging, these slices are defined by multiple parallel X-ray beams shot through the object at varying angles. The initial and final intensity of each beam is recorded, and the original image is recreated using this data for multiple slices. I will discuss the central role of the Radon transform and its inversion formula in this recovery process.

This paper reviews some subtleties in time-delay systems of neutral type that are believed to be of particular relevance in practice. Both traditional formulation and the coupled differential-difference equation formulation are used. The discontinuity of the spectrum as a function of delays is discussed. Conditions to guarantee stability under small parameter variations are given. A number of subjects that have been discussed in the literature, often using different methods, are reviewed to illustrate some fundamental concepts. These include systems with small delays, the sensitivity of Smith predictor to small delay mismatch, and the discrete implementation of distributed-delay feedback control. The …

We formulate a theory that allows us to formulate a simple criterion that ensures that two k-out-of-n systems A and are not ordered. If the systems fail the criterion, it does not follow they are ordered. Thus the theory only serves to avoid some a priori useless comparisons: when neither A nor can be said to be better than the other. The power of the theory lies in its wide potential applicability: the assumptions involve very weak estimates on the asymptotic behavior (as t→0 and as t→∞) of the constituent survival probabilities. We include examples.

In this dissertation we first study partition posets and their topology. For each composition c we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition c. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module of a border strip associated to the composition. In this paper we present a numerical solution of a family of generalized fifth-order Korteweg-de Vries equations using a meshless method of lines. This method uses radial basis functions for spatial derivatives and Runge-Kutta method as a time integrator. This method exhibits high accuracy as seen from the comparison with the exact solutions.

In recent work, Graham has defined a variety which maps to the nilpotent cone, and which shares many properties with the Springer resolution. However, Graham's map is not an isomorphism over the principal orbit, and for type A in particular, its fibers have a nice relationship with the fundamental groups of the nilpotent orbits. We study the inverse problem for the so-called operators with energy depending potentials. In particular, we study spectral operators with quadratic dependence on the spectral parameter. The corresponding hierarchy of integrable equations includes the Kaup–Boussinesq equation. We formulate the inverse problem as a Riemann–Hilbert problem with a Z2 reduction group. The soliton solutions are explicitly obtained.

We present a study of mathematical models of interest rate products. After an introduction to the mathematical framework, we study several basic one-factor models, and then explore multifactor models. We also discuss the Heath-Jarrow- Morton model and the LIBOR Market model. We conclude with a discussion of some modified models that involve stochastic volatility.

A wide class of problems in the study of the spectral and orbital stability of dispersive waves in Hamiltonian systems can be reduced to understanding the so-called "energy spectrum", that is, the spectrum of the second variation of the Hamiltonian evaluated at the wave shape, which is constrained to act on a closed subspace of the underlying Hilbert space. We present a substantially simplified proof of the negative eigenvalue count for such constrained, self-adjoint operators, and extend the result to include an analysis of the location of the point spectra of the constrained operator relative to that of the unconstrained …

A series of numerical simulations is carried on in order to understand the accuracy of dispersive wave models for microstructured solids. The computations are performed by means of the finite-volume numerical scheme, which belongs to the class of wave-propagation algorithms. The dispersion effects are analyzed in materials with different internal structures: microstructure described by micromorphic theory, regular laminates, laminates with substructures, etc., for a large range of material parameters and wavelengths.

We give a new generalization of the Riemann zeta function to the set of b-ball juggling sequences. We develop several properties of this zeta function, noting among other things that it is rational in b−s. We provide a meromorphic continuation of the juggling zeta function to the entire complex plane (except for a countable set of singularities) and completely enumerate its zeroes. For most values of b, we are able to show that the zeroes of the b-ball zeta function are located within a critical strip, which is closely analogous to that of the Riemann zeta function.

"Residuated lattices form the basis of certain kinds of logical interpretations. Also, complete commutative integral zero-bounded residuated lattices are used as a set of truth values for fuzzy logic values, Which are more general than the traditional bounded interval introduced by Zadeh. At times, it is important to know whether or not the lattice can be residuated in the first place. This thesis reviews the literature in lattice residuability and adds more observations.
