Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram 2010 Graphic Era University

Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Improvement in reliability and production play a very important role in system design. The two key factors, considered in predicting system reliability, are failure distribution of the component and system configuration. This research discusses the mathematical modeling of a highly reliable complex system, which is in three states i.e. normal, partial failed (degraded state) and complete failed state. The system, partial failed is due to the partial failure of internal components or redundancies and completely failed is due to catastrophic failure of the system. Repair rates are general functions of the time spent. All the transition rates are constant except …

Finite Element Analysis In Porous Media For Incompressible Flow Of Contamination From Nuclear Waste, Abbas Al-Bayati, Saad A. Manaa, Ekhlass S. Ahmed

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A non-linear parabolic system is used to describe incompressible nuclear waste disposal contamination in porous media, in which both molecular diffusion and dispersion are considered. The Galerkin method is applied for the pressure equation. For the brine, radionuclide and heat, a kind of partial upwind finite element scheme is constructed. Examples are included to demonstrate certain aspects of the theory and illustrate the capabilities of the kind of partial upwind finite element approach.

Optimal Correction Of Infeasible System In Linear Equality Via Genetic Algorithm, S. Ketabchi, H. Moosaei, S. Fallahi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This work is focused on the optimal correction of infeasible system of linear equality. In this paper, for correcting this system, we will make the changes just in the coefficient matrix by using l 􀬶 norm and show that solving this problem is equivalent to solving a fractional quadratic problem. To solve this problem, we use the genetic algorithm. Some examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency and validity of the proposed method.

Approximating Solutions For Ginzburg – Landau Equation By Hpm And Adm, J. Biazar, M. Partovi, Z. Ayati

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, an analytical approximation to the solution of Ginzburg-Landauis discussed. A Homotopy perturbation method introduced by He is employed to derive the analytic approximation solution and results compared with those of the Adomian decomposition method. Two examples are presented to show the capability of the methods. The results reveal that the methods are almost equally effective and promising.

Application Of Homotopy Perturbation Method To Biological Population Model, Pradip Roul

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, a well-known analytical approximation method, so-called the Homotopy perturbation method (HPM) is adopted for solving the nonlinear partial differential equations arising in the spatial diffusion of biological populations. The resulting solutions are compared with those of the existing solutions obtained by employing the Adomian’s decomposition method. The comparison reveals that our approximate solutions are in very good agreement with the solutions by Adomian’s method. Moreover, the results show that the proposed method is a more reliable, efficient and convenient one for solving the non-linear differential equations.

Solving Fuzzy Linear Programming Problems With Piecewise Linear Membership Function, S. Effati, H. Abbasiyan 2010 Ferdowsi University of Mashhad

Solving Fuzzy Linear Programming Problems With Piecewise Linear Membership Function, S. Effati, H. Abbasiyan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we concentrate on linear programming problems in which both the right-hand side and the technological coefficients are fuzzy numbers. We consider here only the case of fuzzy numbers with linear membership functions. The symmetric method of Bellman and Zadeh (1970) is used for a defuzzification of these problems. The crisp problems obtained after the defuzzification are non-linear and even non-convex in general. We propose here the "modified subgradient method" and "method of feasible directions" and uses for solving these problems see Bazaraa (1993). We also compare the new proposed methods with well known "fuzzy decisive set method". …

Approximate Analytical Solutions For Fractional Space- And Time- Partial Differential Equations Using Homotopy Analysis Method, Subir, Das, R. Kumar, P. K. Gupta, Hossein Jafari

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This article presents the approximate analytical solutions of first order linear partial differential equations (PDEs) with fractional time- and space- derivatives. With the aid of initial values, the explicit solutions of the equations are solved making use of reliable algorithm like homotopy analysis method (HAM). The speed of convergence of the method is based on a rapidly convergent series with easily computable components. The fractional derivatives are described in Caputo sense. Numerical results show that the HAM is easy to implement and accurate when applied to space- time- fractional PDEs.

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

We consider a stochastic optimal control problem in the whole space, where the corresponding HJB equation is degenerate, with a quadratic running cost and coeffcients with linear growth. In this paper we provide a full mathematical details on the key estimate relating the asymptotic behavior of the solution as the space variable goes to infinite.

Generalized Newton's Method Based On Graphical Derivatives, T Hoheisel, C Kanzow, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Hung M. Phan

Mathematics Research Reports

This paper concerns developing a numerical method of the Newton type to solve systems of nonlinear equations described by nonsmooth continuous functions. We propose and justify a new generalized Newton algorithm based on graphical derivatives, which have never been used to derive a Newton-type method for solving nonsmooth equations. Based on advanced techniques of variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we establish the well-posedness of the algorithm, its local superlinear convergence, and its global convergence of the Kantorovich type. Our convergence results hold with no semismoothness assumption, which is illustrated by examples. The algorithm and main results obtained in the paper …

Deformation Waves In Microstructured Materials: Theory And Numerics, Juri Engelbrecht, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski

Publications

A linear model of the microstructured continuum based on Mindlin theory is adopted which can be represented in the framework of the internal variable theory. Fully coupled systems of equations for macro-motion and microstructure evolution are represented in the form of conservation laws. A modification of wave propagation algorithm is used for numerical calculations. Results of direct numerical simulations of wave propagation in periodic medium are compared with similar results for the continuous media with the modelled microstructure. It is shown that the proper choice of material constants should be made to match the results obtained by both approaches

A Spectral Approach To Protein Structure Alignment, Yosi Shibberu, Allen Holder

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We present two algorithms that use spectral methods to align protein folds. One of the algorithms is suitable for database searches, the other for difficult alignments. We present computational results for 780 pairwise alignments used to classify 40 proteins as well as results for a separate set of 36 protein alignments used for comparison to four other alignment algorithms. We also provide a mathematically rigorous development of the intrinsic geometry underlying our spectral approach.

Latest Developments In Nonlinear Sciences, Syed T. Mohyud-Din, Ahmet Yildirim

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper outlines a detailed study of some latest trends and developments in nonlinear sciences. The major focus of our study will be variational iteration (VIM) and its modifications, homotopy perturbation (HPM), parameter expansion and exp-function methods. The above mentioned schemes are highly accurate, extraordinary efficient, capable to cope with the versatility of the physical problems and are being used to solve a wide class of nonlinear problems. Several examples are given which reveal the justification of our claim.

A Note On He’S Parameter-Expansion Method Of Coupled Van Der Pol–Duffing Oscillators, N. H. Sweilam, M. M. Khader

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper presents the analytical and approximate solutions of the coupled chaotic Van der Pol-Duffing systems, by using the He's parameter-expansion method (PEM). One iteration is sufficient to obtain a highly accurate solution, which is valid for the whole solution domain. From the obtained results, we can conclude that the suggest method, is of utter simplicity, and can be easily extended to all kinds of non-linear equations.

Modified Variational Iteration Method For Second Order Initial Value Problems, Fazhan Geng

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we introduce a modified variational iteration method for second order initial value problems by transforming the integral of iteration process. The main advantages of this modification are that it can overcome the restriction of the form of nonlinearity term in differential equations and improve the iterative speed of conventional variational iteration method. The method is applied to some nonlinear second order initial value problems and the numerical results reveal that the modified method is accurate and efficient for second order initial value problems.

Homotopy Perturbation Method And The Stagnation Point Flow, P. Donald Ariel 2010 Trinity Western University

Homotopy Perturbation Method And The Stagnation Point Flow, P. Donald Ariel

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The laminar steady flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid near a stagnation point has been computed using the homotopy perturbation method (HPM). Both the cases, (i) two-dimensional flow and (ii) axisymmetric flow, have been considered. A sequence of successive approximations has been obtained in the solution, and the convergence of the sequence is achieved by using the Padé approximants. It is found that there is a complete agreement between the results obtained by the HPM and the exact numerical solution.

Elements Of Study On Dynamic Materials, Marine Rousseau, Gerard A. Maugin, Mihhail Berezovski

Publications

As a preliminary study to more complex situations of interest in small-scale technology, this paper envisages the elementary propagation properties of elastic waves in one-spatial dimension when some of the properties (mass density, elasticity) may vary suddenly in space or in time, the second case being of course more original. Combination of the two may be of even greater interest. Toward this goal, a critical examination of what happens to solutions at the crossing of pure space-like and time-like material discontinuities is given together with simple solutions for smooth transitions and numerical simulations in the discontinuous case. The effects on …

Solutions Of Tenth And Ninth-Order Boundary Value Problems By Modified Variational Iteration Method, Syed Tauseef Mohyud-Din, Ahmet Yildirim

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we apply the modified variational iteration method (MVIM) for solving the ninth and tenth-order boundary value problems. The proposed modification is made by introducing He’s polynomials in the correction functional. The suggested algorithm is quite efficient and is practically well suited for use in these problems. The proposed iterative scheme finds the solution without any discretization, linearization or restrictive assumptions. Several examples are given to verify the reliability and efficiency of the method. The fact that the proposed technique solves nonlinear problems without using the Adomian’s polynomials can be considered as a clear advantage of this algorithm …

Application Of Homotopy Analysis Method To Fourth-Order Parabolic Partial Differential Equations, M. Matinfar, M. Saeidy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, by means of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), the solutions of some fourthorder parabolic partial differential equations are exactly obtained in the form of convergent Taylor series. The HAM contains the auxiliary parameter h that provides a convenient way of controlling the convergent region of series solutions. This analytical method is employed to solve linear examples to obtain the exact solutions. The results reveal that the proposed method is very effective and simple.
