The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of supplementation of sulfur to a diet containing sodium nitrate at a level that would cause chronic nitrate poisoning on some rumen and biochemical parameters in Angora goats. A total of 18 male Angora goats were used. The animals in the control group were fed the basal diet, while the animals were fed experimental concentrate containing 1500 mg/kg sodium nitrate in the nitrate group (N) and experimental concentrate containing 1500 mg/kg sodium nitrate plus 1.8% sodium sulfate in the nitrate-sulfur group (NS) throughout the study, which lasted for 6 months. …

Uterine diseases are highly prevalent in dairy cows. Causes of uterine diseases are multifactorial. There is good evidence for the susceptibility of the host and for the role of pathogenic bacteria, and less evidence for the effect of the environment. Uterine and leukocyte immune response is impaired early postpartum in cows that develop uterine disease. The decrease in immune function is associated with a decrease in calcium postpartum and an increase in NEFA and BHBA. Recent progress in genomic analysis and other biochemical methods has led to the discovery of a large population of microRNAs (miRNAs), which have been demonstrated to play important roles in diseases and a wide range of developmental processes. Characterization of miRNA expression profiles in different stages of ovarian follicular development and early embryogenesis has suggested the potential roles of miRNAs in follicular development, maturation of oocytes, and preimplantation embryonic development. This review focuses on the current studies of miRNAs involved in ovarian and early embryonic development in cattle.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of inbreeding on the yield and quality of bovine embryos. The data were obtained from 125 Holstein cows superovulated on 3 farms in the Czech Republic. In total, 125 flushings of embryos were analyzed, from which 761 embryos were obtained. Of all donors, 36 cows were inbred (199 embryos) and 89 cows were noninbred (562 embryos). The inbred cows were divided into 2 groups according to their inbreeding coefficient (FX) level. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of conventional straw vitrification with open pulled straw vitrification in terms of cryosurvivability and damages caused to the oocytes. Two hundred immature goat cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) were vitrified in a solution of ethylene glycol, dimethyl sulfoxide, and sucrose using either conventional straws (100 COCs) or open pulled straws (100 COCs). Salmonella enterica is a common zoonotic pathogen in humans. Transmission typically occurs through consumption of contaminated food products or contact with infected animals, including poultry or their environment. The objective of this study was to estimate the frequency of Salmonella contamination in the environment in poultry exhibits at agricultural fairs. Samples were collected from cages, feed, floors and tables in the exhibit and cultured for Salmonella. At least one environmental sample was positive for Salmonella in 10 of 11 fairs (91%), and Salmonella was isolated from 28 of 55 environmental samples (50.9%). Non-invasive measures for assessing long-term stress in free ranging mammals are an increasingly important approach for understanding physiological responses to landscape conditions. Using a spatially and temporally expansive dataset of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) generated from a threatened grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population in Alberta, Canada, we quantified how variables representing habitat conditions and anthropogenic disturbance impact long-term stress in grizzly bears. We characterized spatial variability in male and female HCC point data using kernel density estimation and quantified variable influence on spatial patterns of male and female HCC stress surfaces using random forests. Improved understanding of longevity represents a significant welfare opportunity for the domestic dog, given its unparalleled morphological diversity. Epidemiological research using electronic patient records (EPRs) collected from primary veterinary practices overcomes many inherent limitations of referral clinic, owner questionnaire and pet insurance data. Clinical health data from 102,609 owned dogs attending first opinion veterinary practices (n = 86) in central and southeast England were analysed, focusing on 5095 confirmed deaths.

Of deceased dogs with information available, 3961 (77.9%) were purebred, 2386 (47.0%) were female, 2528 (49.8%) were neutered and 1105 (21.7%) were insured. The overall median longevity was 12.0 years …

Bacterial isolates from different cases of respiratory infections in small and large ruminants were evaluated using bacterial culture and semi-nested PCR and identification was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Universal primers targeting the bacterial 16S rRNA for bacteria were used. Other sets of primers that were specific for Gram-positive bacteria and combinations of primers specific for Gram-negative organisms were used in the second PCR. This study aimed to investigate chemical quality of animal drinking used in livestock farms in Thailand. Samples and information from 68 pig farms, 35 chicken farms and 9 duckling farms were collected during March to August 2011. Water quality data were analyzed and compared with standard levels using the Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests. Results revealed that median chemical values of water for livestock were generally within standard levels, except manganese and iron, which were detected in surfacewater with median values of 0.183 and 0.506 ppm, respectively, and are both higher than standard limits for drinking water. Twenty samples of Thai clay from fourteen provinces and seven commercial toxin binders were investigated for their adsorption capacity of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in vitro. Each sample of 5 mg/l AFB1 solution was shaken at 250C for 24 hours and supernatants of centrifuged samples were analyzed for concentrations of AFB1 using a UV spectrophotometer. Adsorption capacity was calculated and applied to isothermic equations. The results indicated that Thai clays was capable of sequestering AFB1 from aqueous solution differently and Thai clay from Lopburi and Lamphun provinces had the highest adsorption capacity, similar to commercial binders. The present study aimed to characterize chicken infectious anemia virus isolated from various outbreaks in Thailand during 2008-2011, and compare them with other strains from the GenBank database using molecular and bioinformatic techniques. The current research aimed to further study the delayed post-ovulatory progesterone (P4) rise in Thai-Holstein dairy heifers in the points of an association with endocrine events around oestrus (experiment 1), effects on conception rate and possibility for P4 supplement post-insemination (experiment 2). In experiment 1, the P4 levels in the delayed P4 heifers reached 1 ng/ml later than in the normal ones (6.8±0.4 vs 3.3±1.5 days after oestrus, resp.) (p = 0.053). Testicular atrophy is a major cause of culling in boars. Pathogenesis of this change is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to investigate pathological changes of the genital tracts of culled boars with testicular atrophy. Twenty-eight genital organs of culled boars collected from slaughter houses in Thailand were pathologically examined. According to testicular weight, the organs were allocated into 4 groups: severe atrophy (n = 12), moderate atrophy (n = 4), mild atrophy (n = 4), and normal control (n = 8).
