Sera from 1133 Turkish horses were obtained and tested for equid herpesvirus 3 (EHV-3) antibodies using a sero-neutralisation test. The sample consisted of 420 privately owned working horses from 2 regions of Turkey, 428 brood horses from private stud farms and breeding stations, and 285 racehorses from private stud farms. Neutralising antibodies against EHV-3 were found in 287 (25.3%) of the 1133 analysed sera. The highest seroprevalence for EHV-3 was detected in the brood horses (51.2%), followed by the racehorses (10.2%), and the working horses (9.3%). The regional distribution, relative frequency, and appearance of glucagon (A-cell)-, insulin (B-cell)-, somatostatin (D-cell)-, gastrin (G-cell)-, and serotonin (EC-cell)-secreting cells in the endocrine and exocrine pancreas of Van cats were examined using the immunohistochemistry method. Glucagon immunopositive A-cells were principally found in the central region of the islets of Langerhans, while insulin immunopositive B-cells were located in the periphery of the pancreatic islets. A 5-year-old mixed-breed dog presenting with diffuse lesions was diagnosed with cutaneous plasmacytoma. Sites where tumors occurred most often involved the skin of the facial areas, as well as that of the shoulder, neck, and back of the body. An outbreak of knemidocoptic mange caused by Knemidocoptes pilae is described in caged Australian budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) in a public park in L´Eliana (Valencia, Spain). Five individuals (5 out of 70) displayed severe malformation of the beak, with the rhamphotheca, rhinotheca, and gnathotheca affected and a slight lateral deviation of the jawbone, which did not, however, impede feeding or grooming.

This study aimed to characterize the expression the GPRC5D gene in the skin of the Liaoning Cashmere goat. Initially, the GPRC5D gene sequence was subjected to bioinformatics analysis. Second, semiquantitative RT-PCR was used to detect GPRC5D gene expression in the tissues. Third, in situ hybridization was used to locate GPRC5D gene expression in the primary and secondary hair follicles. Functional site analysis showed that GPRC5D has 7 transmembrane domains. This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the use of ultrasonography for the diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts. This study was conducted on 22 sheep, which were classified into 2 groups according to their liver health group (healthy liver = 13 and cystic liver = 9). Biochemically, serum concentrations of gamma-glutamyl transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and globulins were significantly increased (P < 0.01) while albumin was lowered (P < 0.01) in sheep with cystic livers. Ultrasonographically, rounded, anechoic, and unilocular hydatid cysts with elliptical circumferences ranging from 6 to 10 cm were seen. The interiors of cysts contained echogenic particulate materials, septations, or fine echoes. At the 10th intercostal space (ICS), ventral margin, size, thickness, and angle of livers increased in sheep with hepatic cysts, while the diameter of portal vein decreased in sheep with liver cysts. At the 9th ICS, the circumference of the gall bladder was lowered in sheep with hepatic cysts (P < 0.01). The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of ultrasonography for diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts were 80%, 100%, and 100% and 83%, respectively. In conclusion, ultrasonography alone or in combination with some biochemical parameters reflecting liver function could be helpful for the diagnosis of hepatic hydatid cysts in sheep.

The aim of the present study was to assess changes in acute phase proteins fibrinogen and haptoglobin, as well as hematological, blood biochemical, and microbiological alterations in local Bulgarian goats with experimentally induced Staphylococcus aureus mastitis. The experiments were conducted with 6 clinically healthy local Bulgarian goats, 2 to 6 years of age, weighing 46-57 kg. The experimental infection was done with a stationary phase culture of a field Staphylococcus aureus strain isolated from a cow with clinical mastitis. Blood haptoglobin in goats was considerably higher (P < 0.05) as early as 8 h after the pathogen's inoculation. The most significant differences from baseline values occurred 24 and 48 h (P < 0.01) after infection. Plasma fibrinogen increased significantly (P < 0.05) 8 h after infection and reached the highest mean concentration (9.12 g/L) by 72 h. Leukocytosis was established as early as 4 h after the experimental infection when leukocyte counts were significantly higher than baseline (P < 0.001). The analysis of results indicates that in experimentally induced Staphylococcus aureus mastitis, significantly higher (P < 0.05) levels of the leukocyte, fibrinogen, and haptoglobin are established as early as 8 h after the infection.

The aim of the study was to use hexapeptide combinatorial libraries to evaluate the influence of high-abundance protein depletion on low-abundance protein enrichment, protein concentration, and 2D gel quality in plasma and serum proteomes of growing piglets and calves. Depleted and nondepleted samples of plasma/serum were resolved using 2D electrophoresis (2DE). Bioinformatic analysis of the 2D gels showed an increased number of detected spots on each gel after depletion of excess high-abundance proteins in calf plasma (+26.46%) and in piglet serum (+49.40%). In the present study, sensitive and mutant colonies of some ruminal bacterial species isolated from sheep, cattle, and buffalo were detected. We counted and considered \"mutant colonies\" the bacterial colonies grown in the clear inhibition zone in the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion susceptibility test. Detected mutant colonies were higher in buffalo than in cattle and sheep. Duricef and metronidazole caused no mutations in any species. The others formed mutant colonies, where roxithromycin = polymyxin = chloramphenicol = gentamicin < erythromycin < vancomycin < piperacillin = cefotaxime < streptomycin < cefoperazone < ciprofloxacin < amikacin. Sheep had the highest number of sensitive isolates, and the number of sensitive isolates was dramatically lower in cattle and buffalo. There were no sensitive isolates with the antibiotic metronidazole, and there was a low number of sensitive isolates with duricef.
