Type I IFNs play an important role in innate and adaptive immunity against viral infections. A novel type I IFN, namely IFN-ε, which can protect against vaginal transmission of HSV2 and Chlamydia muridarum bacterial infection, has been described in mice and humans. Nevertheless, the principle cell type and the expression pattern of IFN-ε in tissues remain uncertain. In addition, the expression of IFN-ε in Indian rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) has not been reported. Our recent study on the effects of neutering (including spaying) in Golden Retrievers in markedly increasing the incidence of two joint disorders and three cancers prompted this study and a comparison of Golden and Labrador Retrievers. Veterinary hospital records were examined over a 13-year period for the effects of neutering during specified age ranges: before 6 mo., and during 6–11 mo., year 1 or years 2 through 8. The joint disorders examined were hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament tear and elbow dysplasia. The cancers examined were lymphosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, mast cell tumor, and mammary cancer. Plethysmographic Variability Index (PVI) is a derivative index of pulse oximetry that allows evaluating an individual's intravascular volume status. Perfusion Index (PI) represents the strength of pulse signal at the anatomic site of measurement from which PVI is calculated using changes in PI over respiratory cycles. Plethysmographic Variability Index has been used to detect hypovolemia and predict fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated human patients however, fewer studies are available in spontaneously breathing patients. Johne's disease is caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), which results in serious economic losses worldwide in farmed livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats. To control this disease, an effective vaccine with minimal adverse effects is needed. In order to identify a live vaccine for Johne's disease, we evaluated eight attenuated mutant strains of MAP using a C57BL/6 mouse model. The persistaence of the vaccine candidates was measured at 6, 12, and 18 weeks post vaccination. Only strains 320, 321, and 329 colonized both the liver and spleens up until the 12-week time point. Cut-Off Values For Gait Variables To Detect Forelimb Lameness In Individual Dogs, Jennifer G. Carr

The objective of this study was to characterize kinetic and kinematic variables in dogs with forelimb lameness and determine lameness cutoff values of gait variables using ROC analysis with observational gait analysis (OGA) as reference. Twenty client-owned dogs with unilateral lameness were included. Dogs underwent orthopedic exam, including OGA, and instrumented gait analysis (IGA; kinetic and kinematic analysis). Kinetic variables with the highest accuracy were PVF and %WD with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.73 and 0.92, respectively. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of the novel oral demethylating agent zebularine (zeb) in laboratory dogs and tumor bearing dogs. This thesis focuses on the application of this therapeutic strategy in dogs with naturally occurring invasive transitional cell carcinoma (InvTCC), which serve as a relevant model of the human disease.

Throughout the video game development process, we faced challenges such as budget, time constraint, and varying areas of expertise. This paper serves as a guideline for similar organizations interested in educational video game development.

In the present study, our aim was to compare physiological and behavioural responses to different noxious stimuli to those of a standardized innocuous stimulus, to possibly identify aversive responses indicative of injury detection in a commercially important marine teleost fish, the Atlantic cod. Individual fish were administered with a noxious stimulus to the lip under short-term general anaesthesia (MS-222). The noxious treatments included injection of 0.1% or 2% acetic acid, 0.005% or 0.1% capsaicin, or piercing the lip with a commercial fishing hook. Ascarids are common endoparasites in psittacines. Fenbendazole has been reported for treatment of ascarid infection in many avian species. In this study, the efficacy of fenbendazole against Ascaridia spp. in large macaws was evaluated. Seventeen pairs of naturally infected large macaws were divided into 3 groups. Birds in group 1 (6 pairs) were treated with fenbendazole per os at 35 mg/kg and repeatedly on day 10. This study aimed to determine normal electroretinogram (ERG) parameters in healthy domestic shorthair (DSH) cats. Normal ERG in seventeen DSH cats was recorded using the QuickRetCheck protocol, a very short method to assess retinal function, of the Handheld Multispecies eletroretinography (HMsERG). Scotopic ERGs were recorded in cats under tiletamine-zolazepam and isoflurane anesthesia. At low light intensity (10 mcd.s/m2) stimulation which determined the rod photoreceptor function, a-wave could not be detectable while the mean±standard error of b-wave amplitude and implicit time were 96.26 ± 5.98 μV and 64.66 ± 0.83 msec, respectively. Progressive rod-cone degeneration (PRCD) is one of several groups of inherited progressive retinal atrophy in dogs. This study aims to describe the characterization of phenotypic appearance and demonstrate the responsible gene mutation, including analysis of the allele frequency of PRCD in Poodle dogs in Thailand. All 10 Poodles with clinical signs of PRCD were identified by a history of progressive vision loss, an abnormal obstacle test, and fundic appearance. Genetic testing of PRCD gene mutation using the Polymerase Chain Reaction and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism technique was performed in all dogs.
