It is critical to understand human behavior in order to implement effective health-care policies for both developing and industrialized countries. Human behavior issues were studied in Ghana, with a developing economy, and South Korea, with a developed economy. From the survey research in Ghana in 2014, we learned that rural residents are heavily dependent on traditional health care. However, local community residents preferred to talk to medical doctors about their health care when accessible. Around 13 million people in the United States have latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) with a 5-10% chance of developing active tuberculosis (TB) in their lifetime if not treated (Center for Disease Control, 2015). At a University Student Health Center (SHC), there is a matriculation requirement for TB testing for students that screen as high risk. Many students have these testing requirements performed at outside clinics, including foreign clinics, and follow-up regarding education about LTBI and treatment recommendations was often missing. Abstract

Objective: To examine existing literature on mobile HIV testing units to determine if they have the potential to increase access to testing, treatment, and HIV education to decrease rates of HIV in South Africa.

Participants: Ten research articles evaluating the HIV intervention method of mobile HIV units in South Africa, including outcome measures.

Analysis: Systematic search of 87 articles from 2000 to 2018 and review of the 10 articles that met inclusion criteria.

Results: Several studies (n=5) showed that mobile testing units are effective at attracting hard to reach populations, such as men and young adults. Studies (n=3) also …

Due to ignorance of specific biochemical mechanisms and the misuse of antibiotics these drugs inadvertently allowed the rise in prevalence of antibiotic resistant strains of certain bacteria as the century progressed. Hospital acquired infections, or HAIs, appear in patients during treatment and are unrelated to the original illness. These infections occur at least 48 hours after hospital admission or 30 days after discharge. With over 700,000 individuals directly affected by HAIs, more attention needs to go into prevention and surveillance. It has been reported that some health care facilities have reduced HAIs by up to 70%. However, this will take a conscious effort from all healthcare facilities, care teams, physicians and nurses. BACKGROUND: In low-resource settings, a significant proportion of fetal, neonatal, and maternal deaths can be attributed to intrapartum-related complications. Certain risk factors, such as non-cephalic presentation, have a particularly high risk of complications. This qualitative study describes experiences around non-cephalic births and highlights existing perceptions and care-seeking behavior specific to non-cephalic presentation in rural Sarlahi District, Nepal.

Background: Bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia (BPP) is the most common clinical presentation of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Although it has been extensively studied, there is little knowledge in our region in relation to burden of disease, demographic and outcome features.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, longitudinal, observational study from 1989 to 2015 in adult patients with BPP, in order to deepen our knowledge of the characteristics of this disease in our community hospital in Tandil, Argentina.

Background: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mpn), Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn), and Legionella pneumophila (Lpn) can cause both epidemic and endemic occurrences of acute respiratory disease and are responsible for up to 22% of cases of community acquired pneumonia. Due to the limited availability of FDA-approved molecular diagnostic assays, we developed and evaluated a multiplexed Real-time PCR assay for the detection of these agents in two respiratory specimen types on the Luminex ARIES® instrument. Influenza infection can vary from mild or even asymptomatic illness to severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Although many national and international investigators and organizations report annual estimates of influenza vaccine effectiveness for prevention of influenza infection in the community, few studies report estimates for the prevention of hospitalizations due to influenza CAP, the most severe form of the infection. Insufficient infrastructure is one of the challenges facing investigators in the field of clinical research. At the University of Louisville (UofL) Division of Infectious Diseases, we developed a multidisciplinary coordinating center with the aim to support investigators in all aspects of the clinical research process. The objective of this article is to describe the composition and the role of the different units of the UofL Clinical Research Coordinating Center. The different components of the Center can serve as a template for institutions interested in developing a clinical research support infrastructure.

Non-Resolving Community Acquired Pneumonia (Cap) Due To Blastomyces Dermatitidis (Pulmonary Blastomycosis): Case Report And Review Of Literature, Johnson Britto

In this case report, we describe a case of progressive acute pulmonary blastomycosis in a healthy adult living in Kentucky, initially presenting with flu like illness with a left sided consolidation, who did not respond to antibiotic therapy. Patient’s clinical condition deteriorated with development of necrotizing bronchopneumonia, mediastinal lymphadenopathy, tree-in-bud reticulonodularity and pleural effusion. A diagnosis of progressive pulmonary blastomycosis was established by radiological findings as well as transbronchial needle aspiration cytology and bronchoalveolar lavage culture demonstrating Blastomyces dermatitidis.
