An Analysis Of The Effects Of Certified Electronic Health Records On Organizations And Patients., Picandra Elzie 2023 University of Louisville

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Certified Electronic Health Records On Organizations And Patients., Picandra Elzie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growing technological advancement of electronic health records can become an issue with quality and electronic patient information exchange if hospitals do not adhere to federal guidelines. It is recommended that hospitals utilize certified electronic health records (EHRs) to receive financial incentives. This certification is supposedly also associated with the quality of the EHR itself. The certification process is criticized for allowing EHR vendors to meet a set of limited functions known in advance. EHRs can affect healthcare quality and electronic health information exchange. This dissertation explored what is known about the effects of certified EHRs on length of stay …

The Association Of Long Working Hours And The Use Of Prescription Sedatives Among U.S. Workers., Emmanuel Ezekekwu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Meeting the needs of a round-the-clock and globalized society has led to an increase in long working hours. This trend has been accompanied by a corresponding rise in sleep disorders and subsequent use of sedating medications. Overtime hours have been associated with adverse health outcomes such as cardiovascular diseases, symptoms of psychological distress, and health behaviors, including risky intake of alcohol and smoking. Hence, the main objectives of this three-paper dissertation were to examine the multi-faceted relationship between working hours, the use of prescription sleep aids, the onset of psychological distress, and the use of health care services. METHODS: …

An Evaluation Of Hospital-Based Health Technology Assessment Processes In The United States., Scott Skinner 2023 University of Louisville

An Evaluation Of Hospital-Based Health Technology Assessment Processes In The United States., Scott Skinner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study explored the practices of hospital-based health technology assessment (HTA) in the U.S., as experienced by healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals. HTA can play an important role in helping to evaluate health technologies at both the macro (e.g., policy) level as well as at the micro (e.g., institutional) level of the public health ecosystem (C. S. Goodman, 2004). HTA seeks to broadly evaluate the effects, properties, and other impacts of various health technologies (C. S. Goodman, 2004). Common goals of HTA are to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and cost-benefit of health technologies. A primarily phenomenological approach was used …

Managing Interruptions To Improve Diagnostic Decision-Making: Strategies And Recommended Research Agenda, Jennifer F Sloane, Chris Donkin, Ben R Newell, Hardeep Singh, Ashley N D Meyer

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Interruptions are an inevitable occurrence in health care. Interruptions in diagnostic decision-making are no exception and can have negative consequences on both the decision-making process and well-being of the decision-maker. This may result in inaccurate or delayed diagnoses. To date, research specific to interruptions on diagnostic decision-making has been limited, but strategies to help manage the negative impacts of interruptions need to be developed and implemented. In this perspective, we first present a modified model of interruptions to visualize the interruption process and illustrate where potential interventions can be implemented. We then consider several empirically tested strategies from the fields …

Examining The Marketing Strategies Of Campus Mental Health On A Minority Student Population, Rochelle Bernarte 2023 California State University, San Bernardino

Examining The Marketing Strategies Of Campus Mental Health On A Minority Student Population, Rochelle Bernarte

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Background: Public health, particularly mental health services aimed at making a positive impact can be difficult to market to populations. Promoting mental health services to a target demographic of predominantly minority students at a university comes with its own set of unique variables making the task especially tough. This can be concerning as studies have shown that minority students experience greater amounts of stress than their White counterparts but are less likely to seek mental health services (DeFreitas et al., 2018; Duffy, 2019; Lipson, et al., 2022). The purpose of this study was to gauge the Attitudes and Practices …

Youth-Friendly, Person-Centered Contraceptive Care For Adolescents: Exploring The Capacity Of Safety-Net Clinics In Alabama And South Carolina, Kristen Surles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: In recent years, high quality contraceptive care for adolescents has shifted away from tiered effectiveness counseling and toward youth-friendly, patient-centered counseling (YFPCCC). YFPCCC is essential in the South, which has higher rates of sexual activity, lower rates of contraception use, and higher teen birth rates. This study examined Southern clinics’ characteristics which support YFPCCC and youth’s perceptions of the contraceptive care they receive.

Methods: This mixed methods study examined secondary data collected in two surveys and primary data collected through key-informant interviews. The first survey examined clinic characteristics impacting YFPCCC, and the second survey examined adolescents’ (aged 16-24) perspectives …

Direct Cardiac Reprogramming: A New Technology For Cardiac Repair, Paige E Brlecic, Clark A Bonham, Todd K Rosengart, Megumi Mathison

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with myocardial infarctions being amongst the deadliest manifestations. Reduced blood flow to the heart can result in the death of cardiac tissue, leaving affected patients susceptible to further complications and recurrent disease. Further, contemporary management typically involves a pharmacopeia to manage the metabolic conditions contributing to atherosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease, rather than regeneration of the damaged myocardium. With modern healthcare extending lifespan, a larger demographic will be at risk for heart disease, driving the need for novel therapeutics that surpass those currently available in efficacy. Transdifferentiation …

Several anti-HER2 agents are approved for third-line treatment and beyond (after first-line and second-line); however, no specific treatment strategy is recommended for third-line and beyond. Although these agents improve disease outcomes, HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer remains incurable and there is an unmet need for effective therapies in the later line setting. This review focuses on the development of margetuximab-cmkb, a novel, Fc-engineered, anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody, and its role in the systemic treatment of adult patients with metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer who have received two or more prior anti-HER2 regimens, at least one of which was for metastatic disease.

Digital Patient Engagement At A Perioperative Surgical Home Implemented Community Hospital, Srinivasan Sridhar, Amy Mount Hunter, Bernadette McCrory 2023 The Ohio State University, Columbus

Digital Patient Engagement At A Perioperative Surgical Home Implemented Community Hospital, Srinivasan Sridhar, Amy Mount Hunter, Bernadette Mccrory

Patient Experience Journal

Patients in rural areas typically require more perioperative ‘optimization’ for surgery. The rural healthcare systems often overwhelmed with coordinating perioperative services and deliver less than optimal surgical outcomes. This is due to limited supporting microsystems and ability to effectively engage and track patients over the 120-day perioperative period to limit post-surgical complications. The study assessed longitudinal patient engagement within a newly established Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) at a rural community hospital serving 10+ surrounding counties to identify barriers and best practices for engagement. A digital patient engagement platform was implemented and used to assess longitudinal patient outcomes and engagement from …

Throughout the United States (U.S) there is a variety of people who are hesitant to get the COVID vaccine. Research was collected on April 14,2021 by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, at a county level for each state. The data depicted this by showing different levels of vaccine hesitancy: “strongly hesitant,” “hesitant,” and “unsure.” Participants could choose between five options: “definitely get a vaccine,” “probably get a vaccine,” “unsure,” “probably not get a vaccine,” and “definitely not get a vaccine” . Strongly hesitant included those who only responded they would “definitely not” get the vaccine. We decided with …
