Max is originally from Chesterfield, Missouri, and Lindsey is from Newburgh, Indiana. After graduation in May 2018, Max will complete residency training at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Lindsey will complete residency training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Both plan to work in a hospital or clinic setting providing patient care within an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Allison Bates is a student in Purdue University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program with an anticipated graduation date of May 2019. Her future career aspirations are to practice in ambulatory care pharmacy or in an oncology setting. She has volunteered with the Joseph Maley Foundation since 2009 and with the “It’s My Closet” organization in Lafayette since 2014. This article describes her experience working as an intern with Dr. Dawn Moore, Vice President of Pharmacy and Chief Pharmacy Officer at IU Health.

Value-Added Services: Incorporating Pharmacy Students In A Hospital Setting, Megan Unger

Megan Unger, a PharmD candidate in her fourth professional year in the College of Pharmacy, completed an introductory pharmacy practice experience at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, during her third professional year. This was the third of thirteen experiential learning rotations that she will complete prior to graduation in 2019. Her future plans include pursuing a postgraduate residency training program. In this article, Megan highlights the value-added services that pharmacy students can provide to institutional pharmacy settings and the patients served.

Objective: Nonprescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications play a crucial role in a patient’s ability to make choices to manage his or her own health care. Often these nonprescription choices are unknown to health care practitioners and thus are often not included as part of patients’ health records. The exclusion of these therapies can pose risks to patient safety. Heroin is a growing national crisis in America. There is an increasing frequency of heroin overdoses. All of the currently used therapeutic approaches to treatment of heroin abuse and other opioid drugs of abuse focus on antagonizing a brain receptor (particularly µ-opiate receptors). However, it has been known that the therapeutic use of certain µ-opiate receptor antagonist may actually increase heroin overdose. Once overdosed, heroin addicts may continue to get overdosed again and again until fatal. Background Population estimates underpin demographic and epidemiological research and are used to track progress on numerous international indicators of health and development. To date, internationally available estimates of population and fertility, although useful, have not been produced with transparent and replicable methods and do not use standardised estimates of mortality. We present single-calendar year and single-year of age estimates of fertility and population by sex with standardised and replicable methods.

The purpose of this study was to compare the enzymatic kinetics and distribution of cytochrome P450 2D (CYP2D) among different rat brain subcellular fractions.

Rat brains were used to prepare total membrane, crude mitochondrial, purified mitochondrial, and microsomal fractions, in addition to total homogenate. Michaelis–Menten kinetics of the brain CYP2D activity was estimated based on the conversion of dextromethorphan (DXM) to dextrorphan using UPLC-MS/MS. Protein levels of CYP2D and subcellular markers were determined by Western blot.

Action potentials (APs) are the functional units of fast electrical signaling in excitable cells. The upstroke and downstroke of an AP is generated by the competing and asynchronous action of Na+- and K+-selective voltage-gated conductances. Although a mixture of voltage-gated channels has been long recognized to contribute to the generation and temporal characteristics of the AP, understanding how each of these proteins function and are regulated during electrical signaling remains the subject of intense research. While hospitals have adopted smart pump technology (SPT) featuring drug libraries and medication safety software, most home infusion providers (HIPs) continue to use traditional infusion pumps that don't offer drug libraries or medication safety software. As infusion delivery is moving from the hospital to the home, the purpose of this study was to determine whether SPT was a feasible alternative at both a hospital-based and a rural HIP. HIP personnel were trained on an ambulatory infusion pump. Patients requiring home infusion used the pump and recorded daily pump interactions for 5 to 7 days. After the creation of a drug …

Compounded oral liquid medications play an important role in addressing the unmet needs of special patient populations, including pediatric, geriatric, and tube fed patients. The use of manufactured vehicles can streamline the compounding activities for pharmacists. In recent years, there is an increase in the availability of manufactured vehicles with various promotional features. This article uses the general formulation principles as a guide to compare and contrast the manufactured vehicles regarding their physicochemical properties, presence of preservatives and dyes, organoleptic properties, and ease of use. We describe the proportion of pharmacist representation among current and corresponding prior editions of Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). Pharmacist representation was 13% and 21% in previous and current editions, respectively, increasing significantly since 2011. We advocate for continued collaborations between IDSA and pharmacy organizations to enhance multidisciplinary representation in CPGs.

Hypertension is a common concern during pregnancy. Beta-blockers are one potential treatment, but third trimester exposure has correlated with an increased risk of perinatal events. Nadolol, a nonselective beta blocker, has properties that differ from those of its selective counterparts, including longer half-life, decreased protein binding, and renal excretion in the unchanged form. There is very limited data on the use of nadolol during pregnancy, and its safety has not been completely evaluated. This case study documents the perinatal outcomes of nadolol use throughout a medical student’s pregnancy and explores the experience in obtaining and undergoing medical care.
