International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Introduction: The purpose of this in vitro study was to test the influence of the margin design of implant supported monolithic zirconia crowns and test if monolithic zirconia crowns with extra fine finish line thickness cemented on zirconia implant abutments can bare the maximum masticatory forces on molars and hence be used in the posterior region.
Methods: Fourteen identical monolithic zirconia crowns cemented on zirconia implant abutments mounted on titanium bases and fixed on implant replicas embedded in PMMA resin were divided into two groups: group I designed with a 0.5 mm CFL (CFL) and group II with …

Meyer’s proposed chew-in technique also called functionally generated path (FGP) technique, is indicated for the restoration of an edentulous arch that is opposed by natural teeth as it does seem to provide the most accurate method of recording occlusal patterns, also help to minimize the effects of negative factors, and to overcome the deficiencies of articulators. As stated by Rudd and Morrow, this technique is especially suitable for tooth-supported complete dentures, due to inherent stability of tooth-supported record bases helps in recording jaw relationships accurately. Whenever a single complete denture is opposed by natural dentition, problems observed are abrasion of …

Objective: To investigate the effect of various surface treatments and different application times on shear bond strength between polyetheretherketone and composite resin. Methods: A total of 110 disc-shaped polyetheretherketone specimens were randomly divided into 9 groups and 4 different surface treatments (control, sandblasting, tribochemical silica coating, sulfuric acid) were applied. The sandblasting, tribochemical silica coating, and sulfuric acid processes were performed 3 different times (10s, 15s, 20s). Then, the composite resins were applied to the treated surfaces of the polyetheretherketone specimens. The shear bond strength test and scanning electron microscopy analysis were performed. The data were statistically analyzed using …

Benign or malignant tumor is one of the frequent causes of resection of the mandible. The extent and location of the tumor decides the mode of treatment of the neoplastic lesion. Surgical removal of oral neoplasm leads to an extensive resection of the mandible along with the associated structures. Objective: This case report describes the use of palatal ramp prosthesis to guide the mandible during movements and restore a stable occlusal relationship with an additional acrylic buccal pad to achieve partial esthetics. Case Report: A 30-years-old female patient reported with the inability to chew food following the mandibular resection of …

Objectives: The FDI criteria for the evaluation of direct and indirect dental restorations were first published in 2007 and updated in 2010. Meanwhile, their scientific use increased steadily, but several questions from users justified some clarification and improvement of the living document. Materials and methods: An expert panel (N = 10) initiated the revision and consensus process that included a kick-off workshop and multiple online meetings by using the Delphi method. During and after each round of discussion, all opinions were collected, and the aggregated summary was presented to the experts aiming to adjust the wording of the criteria as …

The COVID-19 pandemic, declared by the WHO on May 2020, has forced governments around the world to adapt several restrictive measures causing difficulties of access to oral healthcare. In Lebanon, a lack of data on these difficulties and their consequences for completely edentulous people prompted the realization of a pilot study evaluating the impact of this pandemic on access to oral healthcare and on the oral health status, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and nutritional status of these individuals. The study was conducted at the Removable Prosthodontics Department of the Faculty of Dentistry at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut through …

Mandibular substance loss is one of the most frequent acquired defects of the maxillofacial mass. Several etiologies have been described, the most frequent of which are tumours and traumas. The most commonly used prosthetic classification takes into consideration the bone continuity of the mandible, thus there are marginal defect mandibular substance preserving bone continuity and segmental defect with basal bone discontinuity. These bone defects lead to numerous functional complications (loss the dental occlusion, decreased chewing efficiency, lack of stalling during swallowing, phonatory disorder related to the change in the buccal resonance cavity) and aesthetic complications (facial asymmetry due to lateral …

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the vertical displacement of soft tissue during different impression procedures using various spacing of the custom tray, and to determine which impression technique would allow the minimal movement. Material and Methods: 21 partially edentulous subjects were selected and enrolled in the study. Each one of them was subjected to four different impression procedures: three alginate impressions with different spacing of the custom tray and one composed with different impression materials, then casts were constructed. Light-curing acrylic occlusal platform was constructed on the primary model and perforated in 10 different points. …

The rehabilitation of the maxillofacial patient is mostly carried out in a multi-specialty treatment environment such as a comprehensive cancer center, where multiple specialists are available to treat the numerous concerns and complications that may occur. Many of these patients are seen by the maxillofacial prosthodontist at the same time as the other members of the team and maxillofacial rehabilitation can be treatment planned and performed expediently. Some patients, however, are treated without rehabilitation in mind and go years without appropriate referrals. A knowledge of the multiple types of prostheses available will allow the general practitioner to decide if a …

Resin bonded bridge (RBB) is a conservative, medium to long-term restoration of missing teeth. A high rate of debonding was the main limitation in a clinically demanding situation. Objective: To highlight the critical evaluation in identifying the contributing factors leading to the failure of RBBs and avoiding as well as controlling such factors optimally prior to providing further rehabilitative treatment. Case report: This case illustrates a young patient who received resin bonded bridges to replace her missing lateral incisors. Unfortunately, she had issues with bridge debonding, in which one of the abutment teeth was extracted due to caries …
