Effects Of Flash-Free Technique On Plaque Retention, White Spot Lesions, And Bracket Failure: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Payam Ishani Afousi
Theses & Dissertations
A side effect of orthodontic treatment is the development of white spot lesions (WSLs). This thesis attempted to evaluate the effects of the use of APC™ Flash-Free (FF) and conventional adhesives in bonding of orthodontic brackets on plaque formation and retention, WSL development, and bracket failure in-vivo. This was accomplished by collecting plaque samples from around orthodontic appliances and analyzing them using ATP-driven bioluminescence; scanning enamel surfaces using the Canary System™ to evaluate WSL development, and counting the number of spontaneous debonding of brackets of the 4 maxillary incisors in the first 6 months of treatment. It was found …

Methods: Our study population included 33,342 children, from Smile KY! annual screenings from 2002 to 20014. Data collection was through questionnaire forms. Our primary risk factor was “dental health instructions received” (yes/no) and our outcome of interest was “parental assessment of your child’s dental health” (good/fair/poor). We had 13 years of data from 2002 to 2014 and used ‘SAS’ statistical software for data manipulation and recoding. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test of independence, trend analysis and multiple logistic regression modeling were performed on ‘SPSS’ …

Vital Pulp Therapy Survivability Based On Radiographic Depth Of Caries, Aaron T. Schmick
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective chart review was to determine if the survival of two methods of vital pulp therapy (VPT) were influenced by the pre-operative radiographic depth and location of caries. Methods: Electronic patient records (axiUm®) that contained the procedure codes D3120, Indirect Pulp Therapy (IPT), or D3220, Therapeutic Pulpotomy (TP), were queried. Qualifying charts’ pre-operative and post-operative radiographs were viewed in MiPACS® by two raters. Visit records were queried again to identify any other treatment failures. Results: A total of 568 primary molars met the eligibility criteria. There was a difference in survival depending upon the treatment …

Access To Oral Health For Children On Mainecare In The Lakes Region Towns Of Bridgton, Casco, Sebago, And Naples, Carissa L. Parent
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Although we know that children covered by Medicaid often do not receive needed dental services, the extent of the problem in Maine is not fully understood. In particular, rural communities in Maine may face challenges for families to access dental services for their children given low reimbursement rates and fewer available providers. This project addresses these gaps in knowledge by examining MaineCare- funded utilization and dental care access for children with MaineCare in four rural Maine towns in the Lakes Region.

Individual Scholarship
The authors present a case study of a 13-year-old female with a past medical history of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), an autosomal dominant disorder. It usually presents with a triad of epilepsy, mental deficiency and facial angiofibromas that are often dis tributed around the nose, cheek and chin, and are frequently shaped like butterfly wings. In addition, oral manifestations include gingival enlargement and developmental enamel pitting on the facial aspect of the anterior permanent dentition in 50% to 100% of patients. The patient’s chief complaint was gingival enlargement and gingival bleeding. The histology of the excised gingival tissue revealed epithelial …

Does obesity have an effect on dental caries in South Central Kentucky Previous research has presented information stating a high prevalence of tooth decay found within the state of Kentucky. In addition, studies have indicated an elevated rate of childhood obesity found within the region. As a future dental hygienist in Kentucky, it is important to understand if a correlation exists between tooth decay and childhood obesity to better educate both patients and caregivers. The investigation will utilize a sample of patient records through a retrospective collection process. A correlation of dental caries and childhood obesity is expected to be …
