Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease and, if untreated, can lead to significant long-term health and social consequences, posing a substantial healthcare burden (AAPD, 2023; ADA, 2023; USPSTF, 2021; WHO, 2022). This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to implement a multi-modal intervention to reduce ECC risk factors, prevent new dental caries, and halt the progression of existing dental caries. Conducted in a pediatric primary care setting in West Michigan, the project included patients five and under who received an oral examination and dental caries risk assessment following the AAP’s guidelines. Introduction: Osteopetrosis is comprised of a group of rare hereditary disorders characterized by impaired osteoclast development or activity resulting in altered bone metabolism and high bone mineral density. Resulting bone is denser and heavier but more fragile than healthy bone. This condition can have oral manifestations such as malformed teeth, hypomineralization, or agenesis of teeth. The treatment for osteopetrosis can include hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and recommendations for prophylactic dental treatment7. Antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) (i.e., defined as tooth loss occurring before death) is common among humans and many primates, and several studies have examined AMTL across various primate groups. Some research indicates that AMTL can influence masticatory function and diet; however, the effects of AMTL on craniofacial shape and biomechanics have not been extensively analyzed. We assessed craniofacial and mandibular shape in relation to AMTL, anticipating that individuals with at least one tooth lost antemortem would display significant differences in cranial and/or mandibular shape compared to those without AMTL. Understanding Age-Related Differences In Dentists' Perceptions Of Fluoride Use In The Midwest, Alexander S. Becker

This study examined age-related differences in dentists’ perceptions of fluoride use, effectiveness, and risks. Eight Midwest dentists (four early-career, four experienced) participated in interviews with demographic, quantitative, and open-ended questions. While all recognized fluoride’s importance, younger dentists emphasized its benefits and utilized it more themselves than older dentists, two of whom expressed concerns about fluoride exposure and fluorosis, a hypomineralization disorder that occurs during enamel development (Berg et al., 2011). One dentist cited potential neurological risks, including effects on the pineal gland and links to Alzheimer’s Disease. The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This article highlights the role of the MDA Foundation in providing opportunities for professional development and expanding the impact of dentists' careers. It focuses on Dr. Beth Rosenberg's experience, who became a Foundation Board Member after participating in the MDA's Leadership Exploration and Development Program (LEAD).

The LEAD program builds leadership skills through immersion in organized dentistry. The Foundation raises funds through various events to provide scholarships to dental students and grants to community organizations that improve access to care. Assessing Correlation Of Dental Health And Appalachian Culture, Samantha G. Cheek

Proper dental health is crucial for overall well-being, yet access to dental care remains a significant challenge in rural Appalachia. This study examines the relationship between Appalachian cultural identity, fatalistic beliefs, and dental health. Using survey data from 20 participants at dental offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the study assessed correlations between Appalachian identity, fatalism, and self-reported dental health. Results indicate a high prevalence of dental health issues (95% reported significant problems), with 70% lacking dental insurance. However, correlations between Appalachian identity, fatalism, and dental health were not statistically significant. Findings suggest that while cultural factors play a role in healthcare …

Premature loss of a primary molar can occur due to a multitude of reasons, including caries, infection, and trauma. When this occurs and restoration of the affected primary tooth is not possible, the AAPD recognizes space maintenance as a “Best Practice” to prevent loss of arch length, width, and perimeter after extraction. However, reports suggest that with proper intercuspation of first permanent molars, space loss from premature loss of a primary molar is minimal and a space maintainer in that area may not be needed. Due to the anti-inflammatory effect, Manuka honey could be a promising alternative remedy for many medical conditions, including xerostomia. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Manuka honey oral rinse as a novel management for xerostomiain elderly patients. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate and assess the oral surgery needs in a pediatric hospital dental clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Methods: Following IRB approval, appointments over a 6-month time-period were reviewed and recorded when a referral was placed to an oral surgeon. The reason for referral, patient age and medical history were recorded and analyzed. Results: Half of the patients needing oral and maxillofacial procedures were between the ages of 8-10 years old.
