Platform Switching Of Implants May Decrease Bone Loss, Gary L. Stafford

Data sources: PubMed/Medline, Web of Science and the Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register, clinicaltrials.gov, www.centerwatch.com/clinical-trials, www.clinicalconnection.com supplemented by a manual search of dental implants-related journals.

Study selection: Clinical studies, either randomised or not, comparing implant failure rates, marginal bone level (MBL) and/or postoperative infection in any group of patients receiving platform-switched implants or platform-matched implants were considered.

Data extraction and synthesis: Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS).Only randomised clinical trials (RCTs) were considered for meta-analysis. Implant failure and postoperative infection were the dichotomous outcomes measures evaluated. Weighted mean differences were used for MBL.

Primary intraosseous salivary malignancies are rare. The adenoid cystic adenocarcinoma, adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified, acinic cell adenocarcinoma and the epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma have all been reported within the jaws. The mucoepidermoid carcinoma is by far the most common tumor in this setting accounting for 2%-4% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas. An intraosseous sebaceous adenocarcinoma has never been reported. We document a case of sebaceous adenocarcinoma of the maxilla in a 56-year-old woman who presented with a painful swelling of the right face. CT scans showed an expansile, osteolytic tumor of the right maxilla. An exploratory biopsy revealed the tumor to be expanding …

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the leading cause of death among cardiovascular diseases. Among the numerous attempts to develop coronary marker concepts into clinical strategies, cardiac troponin is known as a specific marker for coronary events. The cardiac troponin concentration level in blood has been shown to rise rapidly for 4–10 days after onset of AMI, making it an attractive approach for a long diagnosis window for detection. Statement of problem: The Kois Dento-Facial Analyzer System (KDFA) is used by clinicians to mount maxillary casts and evaluate and treat patients. Limited information is available for understanding whether the KDFA should be considered as an alternative to an earbow.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate maxillary casts mounted using the KDFA with casts mounted using Panadent's Pana-Mount Facebow (PMF). Both articulation methods were compared against a lateral cephalometric radiograph.

Generally, clinical parameters are used in dental practice for periodontal disease, yet several drawbacks exist with the clinical standards for addressing the needs of the public at large in determining the current status/progression of the disease, and requiring a significant amount of damage before these parameters can document disease. Therefore, a quick, easy and reliable method of assessing and monitoring periodontal disease should provide important diagnostic information that improves and speeds treatment decisions and moves the field closer to individualized point-of-care diagnostics.

Purpose: Scaling and root planing with adjunctive chemical pocket disinfection (SRP+C) utilizing sodium hypochlorite solution has been used to treat inflamed pockets of periodontal maintenance patients for many years, without evidence of its benefits. The primary objective was to determine if SRP+C is more effective than scaling and root planing alone (SRP) in improving clinical outcomes. The secondary objective was to compare the effect of SRP+C and SRP on pro-inflammatory IL-1β, anti-inflammatory IL-1ra, and anti-inflammatory index (IL-1ra/IL-1β ratio) found in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF).

Introduction: Simvastatin (SIM) is a hypolipidemic drug that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and bone anabolic properties. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of novel locally-applied SIM conjugated with methoxypolyethylene glycol to form micelles (SIM/SIM-mPEG) in an experimental periodontitis model in rats using micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) and histologic evaluation.

Methods: Experimental periodontitis was induced using silk ligatures around the maxillary right second molar (M2) in 40 Sprague-Dawley rats. This paper investigated the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and precision of laser fluorescence and tactile probing for the detection of subgingival calculus. The gold standard for subgingival calculus detection has always been tactile probing. In this study 27 teeth were collected and 108 surfaces investigated, one tooth was excluded (group #13) where no calculus was observed on any surface, and three surfaces because of subgingival root caries to avoid confounding data, which left a total of 101 surfaces of 26 extracted teeth that meet the investigation criteria. The authors present a case study of a 13-year-old female with a past medical history of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), an autosomal dominant disorder. It usually presents with a triad of epilepsy, mental deficiency and facial angiofibromas that are often dis tributed around the nose, cheek and chin, and are frequently shaped like butterfly wings. In addition, oral manifestations include gingival enlargement and developmental enamel pitting on the facial aspect of the anterior permanent dentition in 50% to 100% of patients. Objectives: This study investigated the correlation between Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans at dual sites in concurrent endodonticperiodontal diseases.

Material and methods: Samples were collected from endodontium and periodontium in cases of concurrent endodontic-periodontal diseases from thirty participants. The sensitivity and specificity of SYBR Green real-time PCR was used to identify the targeted species. Absolute number of targeted genome copies in tested samples were extrapolated from respective calibration curve.
