Dental Medicine Faculty Research
This study aimed to evaluate the use of ozone to treat recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Consecutive sixty-nine participants with RAS were recruited into this non-randomized double blind, controlled cohort observational study (test group). A control group of 69 RAS patients who matched test group with age and gender was recruited. RAS lesions in test group were exposed to ozone in air for 60 seconds while controls received only air. Ulcer size and pain were recorded for each participant at baseline and daily for 15 days. Ulcer duration was determined by recording the time taken for ulcers to disappear. The main …

Cultural Competency In The Dental Hygiene Curricula: A Survey, Christina Calleros
Dental Hygiene ETDs
As the population of the nation becomes more diverse, dental hygiene programs must ensure graduates are receiving cultural competency training in entry-level educational programs. The purpose of this study was to establish a baseline for what topics of cultural competency training are or are not being incorporated into dental hygiene schools and to determine if differences exist between topics covered amongst the types of degree-granting institutions. Topics were investigated via survey instrument and data was collected from 76 U.S dental hygiene program directors. Results of this study emphasized the similarities between entry-level dental hygiene programs and illustrated a lack of …

Study Design: Retrospective cohort pilot-study of periodontal disease (PD) prevalence in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Objective: Evaluate prevalence of PD in cohort of RA subjects for DAS28 score, rheumatoid factor (RF), erythrocyte-sedimentation rate (ESR), C-Reactive Protein (CRP), and anti-cyclic-citrullinated-peptide antibody (CCP) Methods: UNMH rheumatoid arthritis patients completing a 12-question survey with validated questions for PD. Results: PD was present in 16/42 (RR=38%, CI95% (24, 54) compared to New Mexico NHANES data (53.7%, CI95, 52.3, 52.60). Other variables RF, CCP, ESR, CRP and the medications methotrexate and prednisone showed no statistical association with PD. (RF p=.24, CCP p=.24, ESR p=.74, CRP p=.28, …

Alternative Functions For The Multifarious Inflammasome, J. Martel, H. C. Lai, Y. F. Ko, J. D. Young, David M. Ojcius

The inflammasome has been mainly studied in innate immune cells in which it senses microbes and cellular damage, and induces secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This process induces an inflammatory response that is critical for the resolution of infections and repair of tissue damage following injury. Recent studies indicate that inflammasome complex formation also participates in many other cellular and physiological processes beyond modulation of inflammation, such as autophagy, metabolism, eicosanoids production, and phagosome maturation.

Current methods in handling maxillofacial defects are not robust and are highly dependent on the surgeon’s skills and the inherent potential in the patients’ bodies for regenerating lost tissues. Employing custom-designed 3D printed scaffolds that securely and effectively reconstruct the defects by using tissue engineering and regenerative medicine techniques can revolutionize preprosthetic surgeries. Various polymers, ceramics, natural and synthetic bioplastics, proteins, biomolecules, living cells, and growth factors as well as their hybrid structures can be used in 3D printing of scaffolds, which are still under development by scientists. These scaffolds not only are beneficial due to their patient-specific design, but …

The Expert Advice: Dental Patient Compliance Hinges On Effective Communication Strategies, Diana V. Macri
Publications and Research
Most dental hygienists would agree that motivating patients to adopt good oral health behaviors-often referred to as compliance-is the most challenging aspect of practice. This critical component of patient care is not unique to dentistry and dental hygiene. In 2010, the costs of health care in the United States exceeded $2.7 trillion with "between $100 and $300 billion of avoidable health-care costs [attributable] to nonadherence in the US annually."1 Nonadherence (a term used in the medical literature, which is synonymous with noncompliance) is associated with progression of disease and, subsequently, poor health outcomes resulting in an additional burden of billions …

Influence Of Low Temperature Degradation On Microstructural Integrity Of Zirconia Dental Implants, Mona Monzavi Rahimi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Zirconia dental implants have become more popular in the field of implant dentistry. However, concerns have been raised regarding low temperature degradation and its influence on phase stability and micro-structural integrity in terms of increased micro-crack formation. In the case of dental implants, this could possibly result in delamination and interference with bone to implant contact and eventually lead to loss of integration and failure. Nevertheless, no study has reported the effects on commercially available Zirconia dental implants. The primary aims of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between ageing duration and 1) depth of tetragonal-monoclinic …

Accuracy Of Volumetric Analysis Software Packages In Assessment Of Tooth Volume Using Cbct, Saylee Nimbalkar
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of volumetric analysis software packages in assessment of tooth volume using cone beam computed tomography and compare them to the volume obtained using an optical digital scanner. Twenty-four single rooted teeth indicated for extraction were collected. Cone beam computed tomography scans of these teeth resting in a custom scan jig were taken. Three dimensional digital models were obtained from the DICOM image cone beam computed tomography files using segmentation software packages (Anatomage, Mimics, and Amira) and volumes were calculated for each of the segmented teeth. The teeth were then scanned …

A microfluidics approach to synthesize core–shell nanocarriers with high pH tunability is described. The sacrificial shell protects the core layer with the drugs and prevents their release in the severe pH conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, while allowing for drug release in the proximity of a tumor. The proposed nanoparticulate drug-delivery system is designed for the oral administration of cancer therapeutics.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) represents a disorder group characterised by abnormal development of the ectodermal derivatives. Removable partial dentures (RPD), complete dentures (CD) or overdentures (OD) are most often the treatment of choice for young affected patients. Prosthetic intervention is of utmost importance in the management of ED patients, as it resolves problems associated with functional, aesthetic, and psychological issues, and improves a patient’s quality of life. However, few studies present the principles and guidelines that can assist in the decision-making process of the most appropriate removable prosthesis. The purpose of this study was to suggest a simple treatment decision-making algorithm …

The purpose of this clinical investigation was to evaluate and compare the degree of new bone formation through histomorphometric analysis following maxillary sinus grafts (MSG) using three different bone graft materials. Thirty-one MSG were performed using a lateral window approach for patients who required implant placement in posterior maxilla. Each sinus was randomly selected to receive one of three bone graft materials; Group A: anorganic bovine bone mineral (ABBM) [Bio-Oss®], Group B: anorganic equine bone mineral (AEBM) [Equimatrix®], or Group C: mineralized cancellous bone allograft (MCBA) [OSSIF-i sem™]. A total of 28 bone cores were obtained at a mean time …

Oral Health Education Intervention To Assess Oral Health Knowledge And Behavioral Change, Ryan Bakhshi Baker
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate an oral health education intervention on oral health behaviors, oral health knowledge, and diet/amount of sugar consumed by fifth and sixth graders attending charter schools in the city of San Bernardino. Caries status of this particular population was recorded via dmft/DMFT and ICDAS. 143 students (aged 9-13 years) completed a 19 question pre-intervention survey related to oral health behaviors, dental knowledge and diet/amount of sugar consumed. Subjects then participated in an oral health education intervention comprised of an oral health education video and an interactive oral health game. An oral exam recorded …
