Background: Oral health is important for overall health of youth, although dental service utilization is lower than national goals. The purpose of the study was to identify sociodemographic and health behavioral characteristics of youth in the United States who reported having at least one dental visit in the past 12 months.

Methods: Secondary data analysis was conducted using the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to examine factors associated with dental care utilization using Andersen’s theory-based Behavioral Model of Health Care Utilization.

Background: Current primary prevention guidelines for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prioritize risk identification, risk stratification using clinical and risk scores, and risk reduction with lifestyle interventions and pharmacotherapy. Subclinical atherosclerosis is an early indicator of atherosclerotic burden and its timely recognition can slow or prevent progression to CVD. Thus, individuals with subclinical atherosclerosis are a priority for primary prevention. Objective. Disease-modifying treatments for OA remain elusive, and commonly used medications can have serious side effects. Although meditation and music listening (ML) have been shown to improve outcomes in certain chronic pain populations, research in OA is sparse. In this pilot RCT, we explore the effects of two mind-body practices, mantra meditation (MM) and ML, on knee pain, function, and related outcomes in adults with knee OA. Methods. Background. Secretions accumulate in endotracheal tubes’ (ETT) lumens upon their placement in patients. The secretions impact airway resistance and pressure. Secretions potentiate prolonged mechanical ventilation and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Our primary objective in this study was to evaluate an ETT-clearing device (ETT-CD) in its ability to remove secretions from ex vivo ETT lumens. Methods. Forty ETTs, obtained from intensive care patients at extubation, were individually placed into a ventilator field performance testing simulator at 37°C. Background: Heightened fear and anxiety related to pain may result in emotional and behavioral avoidance responses causing disability, distress, and depression. Fear and anxiety associated with pain can potentially change the course of the pain experience. It is plausible that fear and anxiety related to pain affect the duration and frequency of pain experienced by the patient. Introduction: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection with an estimated fourteen million new cases each year in the United States alone. HPV infections generally resolve with little or no incident, but persistent infections can lead to more serious sequelae such as oral and cervical cancers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all 11-12 year olds receive the HPV vaccine; yet, the prevalence of HPV vaccination in the U.S. population is far below the prevalence of routine childhood vaccinations. Introduction: Detection of impacted teeth by the orthodontist is imperative for diagnosis and treatment planning. A tooth is impacted when it has arrested eruption due to the presence of a clinically or radiographically visible physical barrier in the path of eruption. The most commonly impacted teeth are third molars, followed by maxillary canines and mandibular second premolars. When referring to mandibular second molar (MM2) impaction, prevalence ranges from as low as 0.06-0.65%1-5, to as high as 1.36% and 1.8%. Background: Dental caries is a common chronic disease among children and adults alike, posing a substantial health burden. Caries is affected by multiple genetic and environmental factors, and prior studies have found that a substantial proportion of caries susceptibility is genetically inherited.

Methods: To identify such genetic factors, we conducted a genome-wide linkage scan in 464 extended families with 2616 individuals from Iowa, Pennsylvania and West Virginia for three dental caries phenotypes: (1) PRIM: dichotomized as zero versus one or more affected primary teeth, (2) QTOT1: age-adjusted quantitative caries measure for both primary and permanent dentitions including pre-cavitated lesions, and …

Maxillary expansion is a common treatment option for upper crowded dentition and posterior lingual crossbite in children and adolescents. As the midpalatal suture is not yet completely interlocked at these ages, the midpalatal suture can be opened via maxillary expansion to increase the length and width of the upper arch. This solves the problems of posterior crossbite and upper crowded dentition. Since the midpalatal suture is stiff in adults, many clinicians believe that adults require surgical intervention to achieve maxillary expansion. The maxillary six anterior teeth play important roles in esthetics and oral function. Treatments for missing maxillary lateral incisors either by space closure or space preservation need multiple clinical considerations. This case report presents an orthodontic treatment of a 33-year-old female patient who had a convex profile with lip incompetence, missing lower molars and poor prognosis of bilateral maxillary lateral incisors. The atypical extraction in treatment plan consisted of removing lateral incisors instead of premolars to retract the anterior teeth. The improvement of facial profile and lip posture was achieved and the anterior teeth esthetics was further rehabilitated with prosthesis. …
