Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the potential ameliorating effect of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) on tongue papillae of rats with experimentally induced hypothyroidism using environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and fluorescent microscopic evaluation. Material and Methods: For this study 30 adult male albino rats were divided into three groups (ten rats each): (1) Control group: The rats allowed to access freely balanced diet and freshwater supply during the course of the experimental period (8 weeks). (2) Hypothyroidism group: To induce hypothyroidism the rats received carbimazole dissolved in distilled water (5 mg/250g body weight/day) for 35 …

Treatment Of Implant Labial Soft Tissue Dehiscence With Guided Bone Regeneration Vs Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft. A Randomized Clinical Trial, Mahmoud El-Rayes, Waleed F. Esmael, Mohamed Atef, Lobna Abdelaziz
Future Dental Journal
Background: Implant soft tissue dehiscence is a frequently reported esthetic complication, that more often than not affects the functional integrity of the dental implant with eventual loss of osteointegration. Many treatment modalities with different success rates have been proposed aiming to solve this complication or prolong the survival of the dental implant, of which are guided bone regeneration and soft tissue regeneration around the affected implants.
Material and Methods: This prospective study was carried in the hospital of Future University. 11 Patients (1 Male – 10 Females) with 20 Maxillary implant sites demonstrating soft tissue dehiscence were randomly allocated to …

Objective: The present study was performed to assess the 3D alveolar ridge augmentation using the cortical shell from retromolar region and composite bone particulate regarding the width of the residual alveolar ridge. Methods: Thirteen patients with age range 21-40 years old having atrophic anterior maxillary ridge ≤3mm horizontally were included in the study. All patients were subjected to ridge augmentation using composite bone graft and retromolar cortical shell that was fixed in place by two micro-screws. The alveolar ridges were assessed and compared by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the pre-operative, immediate and 4 months post-operative phases by taking …

Objective: This study was designated to evaluate postoperative pain in irreversible symptomatic teeth after different irrigation activation methods using visual analogue scale. Materials and Methods:78 Patients having symptomatic irreversible pulpitis in mandibular first molar (vital pulp) with no periapical involvement were involved in the study. Cases were classified into three groups according to the the final irrigation agitation method used, twenty-six patients each group (n=26). Group A: Root canals were irrigated using NaOCl2* 2.6% with NaviTip (31-gauge 27mm) with double side port irrigator tip (SVN). Group B: Root canals were irrigated using 2.6% NaOCl with manual dynamic agitation using master …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) catalyzes the degradation of the extracellular matrix components and have a major role in many physiological processes including wound healing. In the current study, we examined the correlation of baseline MMPs 1, 2, 7, and 9 expressions with periapical wound healing after surgical endodontic treatment.
Methods: 27 patients aged between 15 and 57 years presenting with chronic apical periodontitis or chronic apical abscess of an anterior tooth with previously attempted or failed root canal treatment were included in this study. During surgical endodontic treatment, tissue from the periapical lesion sample was collected and used for gross …

Effect Of Different Irrigation Regimens On Enterococcus Faecalis Elimination From Infected Root Canals (An In-Vitro Comparative Study), Fadl Khaled, Roula Abiad, Khaled Abd El Galil, Essam Osman
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Microorganisms harbored in the complexities of root canal systems might lead to endodontic failures and development of apical periodontitis. Enterococcus faecalis is the most common isolated bacteria in these cases. Aim: This study was conducted to compare the efficiency of four irrigation regimens on the elimination of an inoculated strain of E. faecalis. Materials and Methods: Forty single rooted extracted premolars were inoculated with a standard strain of Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212) and incubated at 37˚C for two weeks to allow infection of the dentinal tubules. The bacterial suspension was replaced with a new one every 48 hours. The teeth …

Objective: This study sought to analyse the relationship between mandibular posterior teeth and the surrounding anatomical structures. Methods: A total of 170 CBCT images were examined to obtain measurements regarding the following: buccolingual (BL) and mesiodistal (MD) root thickness at the standard level of resection (3 mm from the apex), the thickness of the overlying buccal and lingual bone at the same level, the proximity of the mandibular canal (MC) to the apices of the mandibular posterior teeth, as well as the horizontal location of the mental foramen (MF). Results: The BL root width at 3 mm from the apex …

Apical lesions, the general term for chronic infectious diseases, are very common dental diseases in modern life, and are caused by various factors. The current prevailing endodontic treatment makes use of X-ray photography taken from patients where the lesion area is marked manually, which is therefore time consuming. Additionally, for some images the significant details might not be recognizable due to the different shooting angles or doses. To make the diagnosis process shorter and efficient, repetitive tasks should be performed automatically to allow the dentists to focus more on the technical and medical diagnosis, such as treatment, tooth cleaning, or …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences
Congenital epulis is a rare benign tumor of the newborn that could be detected in the prenatal period. Females are more often affected than males and the premaxillary region is usually the predilection site for this oral mass. Excision is the treatment of choice and no recurrences have been reported so far.
We present our experience with two cases of congenital epulis, detected in the second trimester of gestation and treated shortly after birth with no further complications. Histopathology should differentiate between congenital epulis and other congenital oral tumors even if its clinical appearance is usually enough to make a …

Flowcharts Improve Periodontal Diagnosis By Dental And Dental Hygiene Students, Karo Parsegian, Srinivas Ayilavarapu, Tulsi Patel, Harold A Henson, Nikola Angelov
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: In 2017, the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology updated the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. The goal of the present crossover study was to develop straightforward, illustrative flowcharts and determine their impact on the accuracy and speed of diagnosing periodontal conditions by predoctoral dental students (DS) and dental hygiene students (DHS).
METHODS: Two flowcharts (a decision-tree flowchart and one based on the periodontal disease/condition entity) were developed using updated diagnostic determinants proposed by the 2017 classification. A total of 26 second-, third-, and fourth-year DS (DS2, DS3, and DS4, respectively) and …

Dental Professionals’ Perspectives Working With Aboriginal Children In Western Australia: A Qualitative Study, A. Durey, Lydia Hearn, S. Lund, M. O’Grady, L. Slack-Smith
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: The disproportionate burden of oral disease in Aboriginal children and the issues in accessing mainstream dental services are well documented. Yet little is known about dental professionals’ perspectives in providing oral care for Aboriginal children. This paper presents findings from a study exploring such perspectives.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were carried out in Western Australia following purposive sampling of non-Aboriginal dentists, dental clinic assistants (dental nurses) and oral health therapists/dental hygienists. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed guided by grounded theory for key themes related to the topic.
Results: Findings included a service delivery model sometimes unresponsive to Aboriginal families’ …
