Many advanced cancer models, such as patient-derived xenografts (PDXs), offer significant benefits in their preservation of the native tumor's heterogeneity and susceptibility to treatments, but face significant barriers to use in their reliance on a rodent host for propagation and screening. PDXs remain difficult to implement in vitro, particularly in configurations that enable both detailed cellular analysis and high-throughput screening (HTS). Complex multilineage co-cultures with stromal fibroblasts, endothelium, and other cellular and structural components of the tumor microenvironment (TME) further complicate ex vivo implementation. Herein, the culture of multiple prostate cancer (PCa)-derived PDX models as 3D clusters within engineered biomimetic …

Background: Fully guided implant surgery as a technique is gaining popularity. It has been observed that use of surgical guides improves precision and predictability for dental implant placement. However, like any other newer technology, the acceptance of fully guided dental implant technology among users is based upon its perceived usability. This study aimed at evaluating the perception about using Virtual Implant Planning Software (VIPS) among undergraduate dental students at the university of Sharjah. Methods: Ninety-Six dental surgery students from the University of Sharjah were included in the study. One week after the Virtual Implant Planning Software (Planmeca Romexis version 6.2 …

Background: With time, due to the poor knowledge on it epidemiology, the need to focus on awake bruxism as a complement of sleep studies emerged. Objective: In line with a similar recent proposal for sleep bruxism (SB), defining clinically oriented research routes to implement knowledge on awake bruxism (AB) metrics is important for an enhanced comprehension of the full bruxism spectrum, that is better assessment and more efficient management. Methods: We summarised current strategies for AB assessment and proposed a research route for improving its metrics. Results: Most of the literature focuses on bruxism in general or SB in particular, …

Oral Health Literacy: A Tool To Reduce Oral Health Disparities Among Californians, Rubina Bukhari

Master's Projects and Capstones

Oral health is the health of the mouth, cheeks, teeth, and their supporting structure within the oral cavity. It helps in performing day-to-day routine functions such as swallowing, tasting, chewing, talking, and making a wide array of complex facial expressions. Apart from performing everyday functions, oral health is a crucial contributor to the overall state of well-being and good quality of life. It is measured by oral conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease (Periodontal), and oral cancers. Tooth decay and cavity formations are the most prevalent oral health conditions which affect people of all age groups. However, children are …

Aging An Ancient Maya Population From Actuncan, Belize Using Dental X-Rays, Kaitlyn Nicole Cash 2023 University of Mississippi

Aging An Ancient Maya Population From Actuncan, Belize Using Dental X-Rays, Kaitlyn Nicole Cash

Honors Theses

My goal is to determine an accurate age at death estimation of an ancient Maya population from the archaeological site of Actuncan, Belize. This was done by measuring the lengths of the coronal pulp cavities in the individuals’ teeth. I used X-Ray images to measure the coronal pulp cavities of the teeth and estimated age using multiple regression formulae for premolars, molars, and incisors to make age estimations. The formulae came from two studies, Ikeda et al. (1985) and Drusini (2008), that form the basis of my research. Ikeda et al. (1985) was the first to use this aging method, …

Accuracy Of Interproximal Reduction In Commonly Used Operator Positions Using An Intraoral Scanner, Behnoush Bakhtiari 2023 University of Nebraska Medical Center

Accuracy Of Interproximal Reduction In Commonly Used Operator Positions Using An Intraoral Scanner, Behnoush Bakhtiari

Theses & Dissertations

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine operator’s best position when doing interproximal reduction. Also, to determine if these positions are ergonomically recommended.

Materials and methods: 54 sets of upper and lower models were scanned and 3D-printed. Air-rotor stripping was performed at different provider positions. Vertical and horizontal deviations were measured, and errors were recorded.

Results: In LA, there was no statistically significant difference between vertical deviations in P7 and 11, however, they were both superior to P9. In LL, P11 leads to significantly lower vertical deviation than P7 and 9. In LR, P9 and 11 were superior …

Polymer Chemistry Of Dental Adhesives, Alia Rubaie 2023 University of the Pacific

Polymer Chemistry Of Dental Adhesives, Alia Rubaie

Excellence Day

Dental adhesives are water soluble, non-toxic materials that bind composite resins to dentin and enamel. Adhesive systems are dependent on a polymerization process at the interface and require different moieties to prepare the substrate to effectively interact with the tooth surface. Due to their critical role in restorative procedures, many chemists are interested in strengthening the adhesive bond strength at the interface. The review paper I published in the Pacific Journal of Health covers the evolution of dental adhesive systems over time and provides an extensive overview of what components make up a dental adhesive system. Additionally, the article explores …

Literature Review: Gingival Retraction Systems For Indirect Restorations, Fotima Jaludi, Nurain Rehman, Priyanka Unnam, Jim Milani

Excellence Day

Fixed prosthodontics requires accurate impressions to record the finish lines, which is instrumental for the success of a single crown or fixed dental prosthesis. If the finish line is adjacent to or below the gingival margin, an adequate amount of gingival retraction is necessary to capture the impression that will help the lab in delivering a therapeutic, preventive, and esthetically stable restoration. This review discusses the different gingival retractions methods to achieve maximum hemostasis and retraction for successful indirect restorations.

Shear Bond Strength Of Chemically-Cured And Light-Cured Bulk Composites As Different Temperatures, George Ibrahim, Ryan Conlon 2023 University of the Pacific

Shear Bond Strength Of Chemically-Cured And Light-Cured Bulk Composites As Different Temperatures, George Ibrahim, Ryan Conlon

Excellence Day

The purpose of this study is to compare the shear-bond strength of a chemically-cured bulk composite and a light-cured bulk composite. The chemically-cured bulk composite was delivered at room temperature. The light-cured composite was delivered at room temperature and at 155 degrees Fahrenheit. The null hypothesis is that there is no difference among the three groups.
