The Impact Of Aging On Fibroblast Gene Expression In Post-Extraction Wound Healing: A Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Study, Paula Christina Cohen Schlemmer
Theses & Dissertations
Wound healing is slower in aged patients. Immediately after tooth extraction, fibroblasts are activated to rebuild the ECM, which is later remodeled through the expression of MMPs. Gene expression may be altered in fibroblasts of aged patients leading to deficiencies in ECM deposition and the recruitment and proliferation of immune cells, resulting in a slow-healing fibrotic wound.
Using scRNA-seq, soft tissue was profiled from two healthy patients: one young and one aged at the time of tooth extraction. Two weeks post-extraction, a second soft tissue sample was harvested. Differentially expressed genes were used to identify enriched pathways for each …

Objective: The current study aimed to analyze relationship between of maxillary sinus mucosal thickening and alveolar bone loss using computed tomography.
Methods: All erupted second premolars, first and second molars in the maxillary arch bilaterally, were assessed for periodontal bone loss (PBL), so 12 points in each patient (mesial and distal sides of each tooth) and at same locations, mucosal thickening (MT) was assessed on maxillary sinus floor. Furthermore, probable effect …

Establishing An Objective, Quantifiable Method For Detecting Erosive Tooth Wear, Camille Kita
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study aims to monitor and evaluate erosive tooth wear (ETW) by measurement of enamel surface thickness and texture in a clinical setting. The objective approach is fundamentally different from the standard subjective visual assessment that professionals in the dental field using the Basic Erosive Wear Evaluation (BEWE) method.
Twenty-nine hyposalivation and three control subjects were used in this longitudinal study, for a total of 597 samples (only 577 teeth were eligible for surface texture analysis) evaluated in a longitudinal study including both baseline and 12 month follow up surfaces. Each participant’s buccal surface of the tooth was first analyzed …

Premature loss of a first primary molar can occur due to a multitude of reasons, including caries and infection. When this occurs and restoration of the affected primary tooth is not possible, the AAPD recognizes space maintenance as a “Best Practice” to prevent loss of arch length, width, and perimeter after extraction. However, reports suggest that with proper intercuspation of first permanent molars, space loss from premature loss of a first primary molar is minimal and space maintainers in that area may not be needed. This case report details an 8-year-old female who had significant space loss between the mandibular …

Genus-Specific Probes And Advanced Imaging Technologies For Bacterial Detection In Canine Dental Plaque, Meghan Stern
ALL - Honors Theses
Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums that can progress to bone resorption in the jaw and eventual tooth loss. A contributor to this disease is the buildup of subgingival and supragingival plaque, which consists of hundreds of bacterial species. To study the bacteria involved in periodontal disease, we use extracted canine teeth as our model. Canines were chosen based on their similarities with humans at the bacterial phylum level, as well as having a similar progression of periodontal disease. However, there are significant differences at lower levels of taxonomy of bacterial abundance and prevalence. The abundance and prevalence …

Clinical Assessment Of Erosive Tooth Wear Objective Outcome Measures, Elizabeth Wewers
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether enamel surface texture can be used as objective and quantitative measurements to detect and monitor erosive tooth wear (ETW) as an adjunct to the subjective Basic Erosive Wear Evaluation (BEWE) that is commonly used today. This longitudinal observational clinical study enrolled 32 subjects with a sample of n = 584 teeth. Conventional dental microwear surface texture parameters (surface complexity, roughness, and anisotropy - Asfc, Sa, Str, respectively) (were generated using white-light scanning confocal profilometry) from the buccal surfaces of each tooth accepted to the study. I personally scanned and analyzed n …

AIM: To develop and validate an automated electronic health record (EHR)-based algorithm to suggest a periodontal diagnosis based on the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using material published from the 2017 World Workshop, a tool was iteratively developed to suggest a periodontal diagnosis based on clinical data within the EHR. Pertinent clinical data included clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival margin to cemento-enamel junction distance, probing depth, furcation involvement (if present) and mobility. Chart reviews were conducted to confirm the algorithm's ability to accurately extract clinical data from the EHR, and then …

Staff Matters: Utilizing ‘Unretired’ Workers To Address Hiring Challenges, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Jodi Schafer suggests targeting "unretired" workers to address front office staffing challenges in dental practices. These retirees bring valuable experience, reliability, and a commitment to customer service. Strategies include offering flexible schedules and competitive benefits and targeting recruitment efforts through networks frequented by retirees. Utilizing this demographic can supplement and support full-time staff, alleviating hiring difficulties.

Clarifying multifactorial musculoskeletal disorder etiologies supports risk analysis and development of targeted prevention and treatment modalities. Deep learning enables comprehensive risk factor identification through systematic analysis of disease datasets but does not provide sufficient context for mechanistic understanding, limiting clinical applicability for etiological investigations. Conversely, multiscale biomechanical modeling can evaluate mechanistic etiology within the relevant biomechanical and physiological context. We propose a hybrid approach combining 3D explainable deep learning and multiscale biomechanical modeling; we applied this approach to investigate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder etiology by systematically identifying risk factors and elucidating mechanistic relationships between risk factors and TMJ biomechanics and …

Introduction: Two distinct access cavity designs were used to access Two simulated finite element
models (FE) Lingual (LAC) and incisal (IAC)). Three experimental FE models, including the IT
model, were developed: LAC and IAC.
Methods: For every simulated model, one distinct radicular preparations was carried out of size
#30/.04. The incisal edge was subjected to an occlusal cycle load of 120 N. The maximum von
mises stresses (VMS), maximum principal stresses (MPS), and stress distribution patterns were
assessed and calculated quantitatively.
Results: The traditional access design showed slightly higher fracture resistance to loading than
the conservative incisal access cavity design. …
