Breastfeeding Of Infants With Cleft Lip And Palate, Aarthy Musuwathi Gunasekaran, Shaila Patel, Marie Tolarova
Excellence Day
OBJECTIVE: Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL±P) is one of the most common and most serious congenital anomalies. The birth prevalence of CL±P (non-syndromic and syndromic) varies from 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000 births. Breastfeeding is recognized as the gold standard of infant nutrition that benefits both mother and infant. Cleft, however, presents a serious obstacle to it. In cleft lip, orbicularis oris muscle prevents a seal of the baby’s mouth to breast and cleft palate does not allow negative pressure needed for sucking. We explored obstacles of breastfeeding in infants with CL±P and recommendations of …

Classification Of Immune Landscapes In Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Nicole Thompson
Excellence Day
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an aggressive cancer with a high mortality rate. Prognostic biomarkers from the tumor immune microenviroment (TIME) are needed to determine treatment plans. We hypothesized that imaging mass cytometry (IMC) would reveal distinct TIME characteristics associated with histopathological grades. A 40-plex IMC, covering markers for tumor structure, multiple immune cells, and their signaling activity, was used to investigate the TIMEs of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) incisional oral tongue biopsies. These biopsies were sourced from 24 OSCC patients at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, and contained 13 well-differentiated, 10 moderately differentiated, …

Exploring The Potential Of Periodontitis Vaccines: A Comprehensive Review And Analysis, Jenny Choi, Lena Nguyen
Excellence Day
P. gingivalis, a prevalent bacteria in the oral cavity of patients with active periodontitis, presents a persistent challenge. Patients often receive root debridement therapy to manage disease progression, however, it merely addresses symptoms without curing or reversing the condition. Therefore, there is a pressing need for more sophisticated therapeutic approaches, such as vaccination, targeting the pathogen directly. Although comprehensive research involving human clinical trials are pending, the aim of this invention is to introduce specific antigens of periodontitis to stimulate the targeted antibodies. The periodontitis vaccine has the potential to become a supplement to mechanical therapy. The comprehensive literature review …

Frankincense oil, originating from Boswellia trees in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia, has a rich history as a valuable remedy for various diseases. Recent scientific research has revealed its potential therapeutic effects on oral health, contributing to oral disease prevention and maintenance. As interest in natural remedies grows and concerns regarding side effects of synthetic drugs persist, frankincense serves as a promising candidate for adjunctive therapy. This study examines the impact of frankincense on the oral microbiome, focusing on its antimicrobial properties against pathogenic oral bacteria – P. gingivalis, and F. nucleatum – that contribute to dental …

Physical And Optical Properties Of Material Used For Injection Molding, Nadia Christine Farias Machado
All ETDs from UAB
Background: This project investigates the materials used in injection molding dental resin composites which involves injecting flowable composite into a clear mold. Understanding the physical and optical properties of both the resin composite and the clear mold material is crucial for successful clinical outcomes. For the clear mold material, its translucency, curing light transmission, and rigidity are vital factors. Correlations may be present between trans-lucency and curing light transmission. For the resin composite, comparing wear, hardness, translucency, radiopacity, shrinkage stress, flexural strength, and modulus will affect mate-rial performance. Finally, the depth of cure of the material will be dependent on …

The study aimed to determine the accuracy of diagnosing periodontal conditions using the developed web-based PocketPerio application and evaluate the user’s perspective on the use of PocketPerio. First, 22 third-year dental students (DS3) diagnosed ten cases without PocketPerio (control) and with PocketPerio (test) during a mock examination. Then, 105 DS3, 13 fourth-year dental students (DS4), and 32 senior second-year International Standing Program students (ISP2) used PocketPerio chairside. Statistical analysis was performed using a non-parametric paired two-tailed test of significance with the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test. The null hypothesis that PocketPerio did not increase the accuracy of periodontal diagnoses …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate auriculotemporal nerve blocks for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder management. 583 articles reviewed from five databases, selected four studies for pooled analysis on visual analog scale (VAS) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) outcomes. Pooled analysis showed significant improvement in VAS (-2.27, p < 0.001) and MMO (0.94, p = 0.03) post-auriculotemporal nerve blocks for TMJ disorder. Auriculotemporal nerve blocks demonstrate potential effectiveness in TMJ disorder treatment, warranting further research on long-term effects and side effects.

Would Access Cavity Design Affect The Mechanical Behaviour Of Tooth: A Finite Element Study, Muhammad Ashraf Elhusseini, Engy Kataia, Hala Khalil
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Two distinct access cavity designs were used to access Two simulated finite element models (FE). (Lingual (LAC) and incisal (IAC)). Three experimental FE models, including the IT model, were developed: LAC and IAC. For every simulated model, one distinct radicular preparations was carried out of size #30/.04. The incisal edge was subjected to an occlusal cycle load of 120 N. The maximum von mises stresses (VMS), maximum principal stresses (MPS), and stress distribution patterns were assessed and calculated quantitatively. It was concluded that the mandibular incisor's biomechanical behavior is significantly influenced by the size of the access design. Biomechanically the …
