Morphometric Analysis Of Premolars And Its Relevance To Root Canal Anatomy, James Degracie
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Premolars are especially challenging to treat endodontically due to their small size and often-intricate anatomy. While the majority of premolars present with one or two root canals, the presence of three root canals has been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the root-to-crown width ratio (RCWR) and number of root canals in maxillary and mandibular premolars.
Methods: Data was retrieved from the electronic health records of patients treated at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. A total of 100 premolars which had both periapical radiograph (PA) and cone beam computed tomography scans (CBCT) …

Effect Of Apical Preparation Size On Endodontic Treatment Outcomes, Joseph Vaughn
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: Previous authors have attempted to identify the ideal apical preparation size needed to achieve endodontic treatment objectives. Despite vast literature on the topic, there exists a lack of consensus on ideal apical enlargement, with few studies discussing the effect of apical prep enlargement on clinical outcomes. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effect of final apical preparation size on endodontic outcomes in maxillary and mandibular molars treated in both a graduate endodontic clinic and a private practice.
Methods: A chart review was conducted for patients seen at the VCU graduate endodontic clinic as well as …

Theses and Dissertations
Objective: To evaluate the association of portal of exit (POE) of the second mesiobuccal (MB2) canal with the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) in previously treated maxillary molars
Methods: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 106 previously treated maxillary molars seen for either recall or retreatment in the past 3 years were included in the study. Scans were reviewed by one endodontic resident and one board-certified endodontist to determine the POE (separate versus common) of the missed MB2 canal and the presence or absence of a periapical hypo-dense area. Association between AP and portal of exit was assessed using …

The aim of current study was to investigate numbers of root canal, canal configurations, canal curvatures and pulp chamber of the mandibular first molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in a selected Thai population. Total of 492 mandibular first molars were evaluated. The number of roots, root canals and their root canal configurations were recorded. When c-shaped molars were excluded, 479 teeth were further investigated the number and direction of root canal curvature, also morphological of pulp chamber. Correlations with gender, tooth side and age (for pulp chamber) were analyzed. This current study found that the prevalence of teeth …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study evaluated M1 and M2 macrophage polarization in human periapical cysts and granulomas through an immunohistochemical analysis and investigated the correlation between the macrophage polarization and histopathological diagnosis, clinical features and lesion volume using cone-beam computed tomography. The periapical biopsies histopathologically diagnosed as radicular cyst (n=52) and periapical granuloma (n=51) were analyzed by immunohistochemical method. Immuno-expressions of CD68 and CD163 were quantified. The CD68/CD163 ratio was adopted to represent M1 or M2 macrophage polarization. Pathological diagnosis, patients’ age, gender, clinical signs and symptoms, tooth location of the periapical lesion, and history of root canal treatment were obtained from treatment …

Shear Bond Strength Comparison Of Bioceramics To Root Dentin., Yasmin Alma Hoffman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: The purpose of this study is to compare the push-out bond strength of four bioceramic materials to root dentin that are used during regenerative endodontics. The bioceramics being tested are: 1. Biodentine®(Septodont); 2. EndoSequence BC Putty Fast Set® (Brasseler); 3. NeoPutty® (Avalon Biomed); and 4. ProRoot MTA White® (Dentsply). A high bond strength of a bioceramic material to root dentin will provide excellent seal. An improved seal may correlate with less potential for contamination of the pulp space that is undergoing regenerative activity. This in turn will lead to long-term clinical success. The null hypothesis is that there is …

Dental And Oral Manifestations Of Rheumatoid Arthritis: Is It Related To General Disease Activity?, Omnia A. Abubakr, Ali M Youssef, Mohamed A Mohamed, Mohamed A Hamdy
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background: RA is a chronic immune-mediated systemic disorder; its pathogenesis is complex. Genetic, environmental, hormonal, and lifestyle are the main risk factors. The correlation between oral health and RA is rising. Oral manifestations in RA include temporomandibular joint disorder, secondary Sjögren’s syndrome, xerostomia, and periodontal disease. Previous studies suggest a bidirectional relationship between RA and periodontal diseases. This study aims to detect oral mucosal and dental disease in RA patients and its relation to demographic features, disease activity, and extra-articular manifestation. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 150 patients with RA allocated into two groups, 75 patients in each …

A Comparison Of Endodontic Root-End Filling Techniques: A Micro-Computed Tomography Analysis, Leslie P. Wolford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction:
Researchers have compared the differences between hand compaction of root-end filling bioceramics with compaction of these materials by hand followed by ultrasonic activation (hand/ultrasonic compaction). Additionally, most of these researchers did not utilize Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) analysis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate total porosity volume of three different bioceramics when compacted by hand alone versus hand/ultrasonic compaction using Micro-CT Analysis.
Materials and methods:
Seventy-two human maxillary central incisors were selected for the study. All were subjected to orthograde endodontic treatment followed by root tip resection 3-mm from the apex at a 90° to the long axis …

Introduction: This study investigated the effects from the carious cavity and access from it on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary premolars using finite element analysis (FEA). Methods: A maxillary premolar was used to compare three types of access cavity related to having a proximal carious defect: Caries-driven access (CDA), Conservative access that has a mesial component (MCA) as well as traditional access with the same mesial component (MTA). Cyclic loading was simulated on the occlusal surface and number of cycles till failure (NCF) was compared to the intact tooth model (IT). Mathematical analysis was done to evaluate the …
