Primary dental care is a patient-centered service consisting of routine dental checkups. The oral cavity is the first point of entrance to the body for many harmful pathogens. Therefore, primary dental care is essential to not only prevent and treat conditions in the mouth, but to also reduce the number of systemic diseases in the rest of the body. Background/purpose: Anomalies in human dentition are some of the most common occurrences of congenital abnormalities. Present study aimed to determine the prevalence of hypodontia, hyperdontia and concomitant hypo-hyperdontia (CHH) among patients attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Dental Medicine clinics. Materials and methods: Retrospective search was conducted on patients’ clinical notes in AxiUm. Search included using keywords such as “hypodontia”, “hyperdontia”, “supernumerary teeth” and “congenitally missing”. Panoramic radiographs were used to confirm the hyperdontia, hypodontia or CHH for patients attending the UNLV SDM clinics from 2010 to 2018. Collected data were analyzed using the chi-square test. …

This thesis examines the effectiveness of an active learning approach in improving oral health literacy and attitude about science among at-risk students in the age range of third to sixth grades. This is done by designing and implementing a novel Oral Health Outreach module and video. Active learning components include engaging PowerPoint, oral hygiene discussion and demonstration, and finally a biofilm simulation, which utilizes glow-in-the-dark paint, dentoform models, and black lights that allow students to visualize the importance of plaque removal. This dissertation focused on the relationship between type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and the factors associated with this relationship in the US. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common biobehavioral childhood disorder that leads to significant behavioral problems that affect everyday life. Objective: This study aimed to compare oral health and oral health behaviors among children with and without ADHD. Methods: The study included 105 children aged 9–12 years with ADHD and 105 age-, gender-, and family income-matched children without ADHD. Clinical data as caries, periodontal health, and traumatic dental injuries were recorded by calibrated examiners. Cancer diagnosis overwhelms patients and caregivers. As the spouse of a patient with leukemia who received bone marrow transplant therapy, I share insights into the challenges these patients face. Oral healthcare professionals play a vital role during these trials. Dental teams, often at the oncology's behest, conduct comprehensive exams and treatments before cancer therapy starts. Providing timely and efficient dental care is essential to achieve clearance to proceed with cancer therapy. Dental infections can be catastrophic for these patients who may be immune compromised.
