Dental professionals play a significant role in addressing the oral health and prevention of disease for populations in the United States. Orthodontic treatment as a risk factor for the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has been a controversy in literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of TMD, as defined in the Diagnostic Criteria (DC)/TMD Axis II, among orthodontic patients. A cross-sectional study (N=180) consisted of 3 groups: 60 control patients seeking orthodontic consultation, 60 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment for 3-5 months, 60 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment for 10-14 months. Mental illness is a psychological impairment involving emotions, cognitions, and behaviors, and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. Dental students may encounter patients with underlying psychological problems during their training. Objective: To evaluate dental students’ perception, attitude, and willingness to interact with patients with mental illness. Methods: A multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted involving undergraduates at three dental institutions in Malaysia using an online self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive data analysis was conducted and statistical analysis using chi-square test was done for associations (p < 0.05). The School of Dentistry in partnership with the health sciences library at the University of Utah developed VR simulations for dental implants. The benefits of using the technology included providing endless scenarios, evaluation measures, and experiential learning experiences for students [1]. The school administration found that the simulations kept pace with the requirements of regulatory authorities, helped reduce costs in dental education, and found that students who trained in VR scored significantly better than traditional methods largely due to their ability to repeat tasks and receive instant feedback [2, 3].

The New York State Dental Journal

The purpose of this study was to analyze how 2013 New York State Medicaid legislation that introduced HLD index affected orthodontic Medicaid treatment approval affected orthodontic Medicaid treatment approval. Eighty-six patients pre-2013 and eighty-six post-2013 were selected from a single academic center. The number of patients who auto-qualified post-2013 significantly increased (58 vs 39, p=0.006). For the patients who did not auto-qualify there was a significant increase (p=0.017) in HLD scores post-2013 (31.38) compared to pre-2013 (13.34). Fifty-one percent of the patients approved pre -2013 would not have qualified for coverage under the current policy.
