Oral health is a critical component of overall wellbeing, yet disparities in access to dental care disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly elderly residents in nursing homes. Poor oral hygiene is linked to systemic health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cognitive decline. Despite federal regulations mandating oral health assessments in nursing homes, many facilities lack adequate resources, and care often falls to undertrained staff. Background: Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease triggered by the dysbiosis of the subgingival microbiome. 16s rRNA sequencing has been used to profile the subgingival plaque samples in healthy and periodontitis subjects. Here, we have collected subgingival plaque samples from subjects and analyzed the microbiome profile from 16s rRNA sequencing. We hypothesized that periodontitis patients will have a different subgingival microbiome profile than that of healthy subjects.

The MDA Foundation expresses heartfelt gratitude to donors and volunteers who contributed to improving oral health care access and education in 2024. Efforts included funding free and reduced-cost clinics, awarding scholarships, and hosting the Mission of Mercy (MOM) free clinic in Flint. For 2025, plans include the Sparkling Smiles fundraising event during the MDA Annual Session in Detroit and laying the groundwork for next year’s MOM in Kalamazoo. The Foundation encourages applications for grants (deadline: May 1) and scholarships (applications open Aug. 1), continuing its commitment to supporting Michigan communities and dental students.

Objectives: Since 1996, substantial evidence showed that pregnant patients’ oral health and pregnancy outcomes are related. The objectives were to assess general dentists’ education, knowledge, and behavior related to treating pregnant patients and how COVID-19 changed behavior related to these patients’ treatment.

Methods: 2,500 surveys were mailed to general dentists who were members of the American Dental Association; 96 letters were undeliverable and 253 surveys were completed (Response rate: 10.52%).

Results: 50.2% agreed/strongly agreed that they were well-educated in dental school about treating pregnant patients. Only 34% were satisfied with this education. The majority knew that periodontal disease was associated …

Children of caregivers with low oral health literacy (OHL) tend to have greater unmet dental needs and poorer oral health status. The purpose of this study was to examine the understanding of pediatric dental terms associated with the dental caries process among low-income caregivers.

Objective: To investigate the association between oral health status and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in older adults with diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: A cross-sectional study involving participants aged 60 and above from a Malaysian healthcare facility utilized structured interviews using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) questionnaire. Intraoral assessments, including BPE, DMFT index, evaluation of edentulism and assessment of restoration/denture type/quality, were conducted. Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, oral hygiene practice, and self-perception of periodontal health among the older adult population in Malaysia and its association with demographic factors. Methods: An online questionnaire assessing their knowledge, attitude, oral hygiene practices, and self-perception of periodontal disease was distributed to adults aged 50 years and above. Results: 397 respondents participated. The mean knowledge score was 1.36 (SD 0.92), significantly associated with gender, ethnicity, education, and occupation. The debate surrounding fluoride use for caries control has intensified due to recent events, including a National Toxicology Program (NTP) report and a court ruling mandating EPA action on fluoride levels in tap water.

Despite concerns about fluoride's potential neurodevelopmental impact at high concentrations, current evidence shows no adverse effects at the recommended levels of 0.7 ppm in U.S. community water fluoridation programs. While studies in regions with endemic fluorosis suggest an association between high fluoride exposure and lower IQ, methodological limitations undermine causal conclusions.

Purpose: This study examines dental hygienists' perceptions of dental therapy in Washington State. Methods: A cross-sectional survey utilizing a Likert-scale questionnaire was conducted among dental hygienists recruited from Washington State Dental Jobs Facebook groups. Descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation analysis examined key variables. Results:Of the 46 participants (n=46), 72% reported that they believed dental therapy could improve access to care in underserved areas. Concerns about current educational standards for safe practice were noted. 11% expressed interest in pursuing a dental therapy degree within the next five years, motivated by interest and career opportunities.
