Dental hygiene licensure with a clinical competency examination (CCE) using a live patient has been required by state licensing boards since 1929. Clinical competency examinations were initially used when dental training was poorly developed, non-standardized, and largely based on the apprenticeship model. Currently, Canada and the state of California have removed the requirement of passing a CCE for dental hygiene licensure, provided certain requirements have been met. Dentistry is the last health care profession to mandate that graduates pass a CCE. Oral health is a critical component of overall wellbeing, yet disparities in access to dental care disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly elderly residents in nursing homes. Poor oral hygiene is linked to systemic health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cognitive decline. Despite federal regulations mandating oral health assessments in nursing homes, many facilities lack adequate resources, and care often falls to undertrained staff. The purpose of this study was to assess dental hygienists' practices regarding anxiety-reducing techniques, their attitudes towards managing patients with dental anxiety, and the extent of their training on the topic. To collect data, an adaptation of the existing survey from the UNC Department of Dental Ecology Survey, was distributed to licensed dental hygienists. The findings of the research questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. Objectives: Since 1996, substantial evidence showed that pregnant patients’ oral health and pregnancy outcomes are related. The objectives were to assess general dentists’ education, knowledge, and behavior related to treating pregnant patients and how COVID-19 changed behavior related to these patients’ treatment.

Methods: 2,500 surveys were mailed to general dentists who were members of the American Dental Association; 96 letters were undeliverable and 253 surveys were completed (Response rate: 10.52%).

Results: 50.2% agreed/strongly agreed that they were well-educated in dental school about treating pregnant patients. Only 34% were satisfied with this education. The majority knew that periodontal disease was associated …

For 2025, plans include the Sparkling Smiles fundraising event during the MDA Annual Session in Detroit and laying the groundwork for next year’s MOM in Kalamazoo. Background: Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), including food, housing, interpersonal violence, and transportation are non-medical problems that can influence health outcomes (World Health Organization, 2020). Low-income minorities and public-payer groups are at considerable higher risk for social needs. Collaboration within the community can improve health outcomes (Sulley et al., 2021). Children with special health care needs (SHCN) are at a heightened risk of developing chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or cognitive conditions that significantly affect their oral and general health. These children often encounter significant barriers to receiving adequate dental care, which contributes to neglected oral health needs. Common challenges include increased risk of dental diseases due to medication use, oral hygiene difficulties, and dietary restrictions. Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of smoking cessation interventions on periodontal outcomes in individuals who have successfully abstained from smoking for a minimum of six months following non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Methods: A total of 122 participants, based on inclusion & exclusion criteria, were divided into a smoking cessation group (n=61) and a control group (n=61). Demographic characteristics, smoking history, and baseline oral health parameters were assessed in these patients. Over a 2-year follow-up period, changes in probing depth and alveolar bone loss were measured, statistically analysis were performed using SPSS software.
